Gav spent 14 years as a developer for Games Workshop, and started writing novels and short stories in the worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 when the Black Library imprint was launched in 1997.

He continues to write for Black Library, and his first 'homegrown' novel series The Crown of the Blood has been released via Angry Robot.

Currently living in Nottingham, Gav shares his home with his loving and very understanding partner - Kez, and their beautiful little boy - Sammy.

Each book will be linked by a thematic narrative but there won't be a direct arc as such - just because Asurmen is the first in the series doesn't mean it is the first to occur chronologically. That'll make more sense when you read the opening.

As well as a 'present day' 40k story (one set sometime in the last few thousand years, at least) we also get a story from the days of the Fall. In this case the second narrative examines how Asurmen came to be the first Phoenix Lord.(less)

Most Space Marines are such a brotherhood you have to work harder to provide conflict between them, but the Dark Angels come ready-made with agendas!

I also enjoy writing about those Space Marines that have broken their oaths and gone renegade - they allow personality and selfishness to drive the stories. (less)

Son of a Pitch!

Blank Open NotebookOver the last few years I’ve run a number of writing workshops at Edge-Lit in Derby. Last year I tackled writing snyopses / pitches. Given the number of people that have been in touch about the submissions window for Black Library, in particular how to formulate their summary, I thought I’d write up my notes.

I’ll be running another workshop at Edge-Lit later in the year, subject yet to be decid...

“There is a very simple reason why Lion El'Jonson did not take part in the final battles of the Horus Heresy. It is beautifully simple, when you consider it. He was waiting.'
'Waiting for what?' Boreas asked quietly.
'He was waiting to see which side won, of course.”
Gav Thorpe, Angels of Darkness

“For the first and the last time in his life, Corax cried. He cried not for the loss of life, though it was great.
He cried not for the degradation that has been heaped upon his dead warrior, though it was obscene.
He cried for all Astartes, for the shame that Horus has brought upon them. They had been the Emperor's trusted sword, and they had betrayed him. It mattered not that Corax himself had remained loyal, he was Astartes and the shame of one was the shame of all.
'Will they ever trust us again?'
A tear rolled down his cheek and dropped onto the fallen Raven Guard. Should they trust us, was the next question.”
Gav Thorpe, Raven's Flight

“Una orden es un acto de agresión; un deseo es un acto de sumisión”
Gav Thorpe, Path of the Warrior
