Bestiary Production Update #3
For today’s update, I have two new blurbs to feature!
“Bestiary opens with such a hook, an intense mind grab, that I instantly became intrigued to find out what Karen witnessed after she secretly follows a man who enters a massive circus tent. What she stumbles upon, sets the reader up for an intense ride to the very end. Get ready my dear readers, you’re in for a big surprise, compliments of Patrick and his twisted imagination.” ~Charles Day, Bram Stoker Award®-nominated author of, LEGEND OF THE PUMPKIN THIEF, HUNT FOR THE GHOULISH BARTENDER, & DEEP WITHIN
And…
“With Bestiary, Rutigliano straps you in and doesn’t let go. Part mystery, part suspense, mixed with a hefty blend of gore and violence, it’s a genre-splitting thrill ride from front to back. Keep your lights on, because you never know what’s coming.” ~Michael S. Gardner, author of DOWNFALL and BETRAYAL: A ZOMBIE NOVEL (
Meanwhile, I’m still working out a way to pay for a cover. It occurs to me that I still have a few extra copies of my work hanging around. I think the time to sell them off may have finally arrived. More on that soon…

New Article Up (Why Write Horror Fiction?)
As much as people underestimate the genre, there are many good reasons to write horror.

Bestiary Production Update #2
Before I get started, I’d like to make a quick apology for the accidental Saturday (rather than Sunday) post. DST and I do not play well together, and my sense of time is still more than a little screwed up.
As to new developments regarding Bestiary, I think I’ve finally settled on the cover artist I want to use. However, I will probably have to wait until the rent is paid to contact her. If my budget allows it, I hope to have the cover done and ready to go before the end of next month.
Additionally, I have a new blurb in courtesy of Eric S. Brown, author of the famed Bigfoot War series!
“Awesome. Pure Awesome. I have no other word to describe this book. Rutigliano knocks it out of the park with this one.” Eric S Brown, author of BIGFOOT WAR and HOMEWORLD
Finally, I’ve decided I’m going to enroll Bestiary in the Kindle Select program. This means that I’ll have to remove most of the chapters I’ve uploaded to the blog (at least temporarily). However, for those of you who have been following the story, I will be making the 10% I’m allowed to keep up the last two chapters for a limited time which I will later specify.
Until then, enjoy the majority of the book in the Free Fiction section while you can!

New Article Up (The Roots of Horror)
Would you believe every horror story comes from only one of two places? Dig up the roots here:

Bestiary’s Back Cover and First Blurb
The following may be tweaked before publication (picky fellow that I am). I haven’t decided yet.
Karen Lambert lost both her parents on a bright autumn night, victims of a man who promised miracles.
Now, thanks to private investigator, Cal Leverone, Karen’s hunt may finally be over.
Together, they will learn that monsters aren’t merely born, but made, and Doctor Cromwell’s words can sculpt flesh more deftly than any scalpel…
“Bestiary is a beautiful/horrible tale of revenge and loyalty, with no clear lines drawn between hero and villain. Pat Rutigliano gets it done.” -Thom Brannan, author of LORDS OF NIGHT
Useful Links for my Fellow Writers
Since I recently found a post by someone wondering how to find markets for horror fiction, I figured I’d pass the information I gave him on to you. I don’t submit my work much these days, but these are the links that most of the speculative writing community uses:
http://www.ralan.com/ -While Ralan tends to lean more toward science-fiction than horror, it does contain a fair bit of both. Additionally, it probably updates the most religiously of the three sites I’m going to mention (or at least it did when I used it).
https://duotrope.com/ -Duotrope is a great site for searching for any kind of market, regardless of genre. The site features an excellent search engine that makes it very easy to find a match for your criteria (length, payment, etc.). About the only bad thing about Duotrope is that it now charges users, but you can try it out for free to see if it’s worth the price.
http://thegrinder.diabolicalplots.com/ -The Grinder came to my attention only within the last year or so. The site is essentially a Duotrope clone, but it’s free to use. As it’s new and not as well known, there are less statistics to draw from on the market listings, but it’s still a good tool.

Bestiary Production Update #1
Welcome to the first update on the new book. Here’s how the land lies so far:
-All the formatting and editing on the book is already done (the latter by the talented Felicia Sullivan).
-I’ve been running the book’s back cover description by some of my peers. It’s nearly done, but I may run it by one more beta tester first.
-The book has already been sent to a number of authors for blurbs/endorsements. However, I do need to touch base with them tomorrow to see how close they are to finishing up. I’ll share the blurbs with you as they come in.
-The cover art is the one really sticky part at the moment. As Bestiary is a series, I want all the covers to be done by the same person, in a similar style, so it’s a big decision. That said, I am going to finish sorting through prospects this week and settle on someone if possible.
That’s it for now, folks. I’ll fill you in on any new developments next Tuesday.

No Article Today Because…
I was too busy finishing up the rough draft of Bestiary 3 this week to write one. So instead of a few hundred words of advice/insight today, you’ll be getting about 18,000 words of fiction down the line. I hope you don’t mind.
