Get Inside the Mind of Lance Burson (@TLanceB)

I am very fond of Lance for several reasons. He’s an incredible writer, a family man, and he has impeccable taste in music. We bonded while visiting each other’s blogs, and I became hooked on his regular instalments for a story called: “The Ballad of Helene Troy.” Now he’s published his serial and it’s become his debut novel!

In addition to an active blog, aptly named: My Blog Can Beat Up Your Blog, Lance also writes  for the online magazine Sprocket Ink, and conducts a fantastic weekly meme called 100 Word Song, which I’ve written for several times.

Lance’s writing is humorous, crisp, and raw. He covers topics from depression to music to the four beautiful women in his life. His honesty is one of the things that draws me to his work over and over again.

Read him, and you’ll know what I mean. And pick up The Ballad of Helene Troy, well worth your time.

Please welcome a man who could never be boring because he’s much too cool—Mr. Lance Burson.

The Ballad of Helene Troy

In the hot, sticky summer of 2008, New York City saw the rebirth of rock and roll. Her form is female and her style was relentless. Twenty-four-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist, Helene Troy, had a dream to matter with her talent in music. In a grungy apartment in the rotten core of The Big Apple, Helene worked, sweated, bled, drank, fought, loved, and rocked harder than her peers in hopes of becoming the next great thing. The rise and fall of her band, Slipper Socks Medium, highlighted her dramatic, gritty road to possible stardom.

Inside Lance’s Mind

[eden] So great to finally have you here, Lance, and despite a slight technicality, you are just in time. Yay! Let’s start with an easy question, shall we?

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Is there such a thing as perfect happiness? I feel like I should break into a Smiths song now. Happiness? I guess when my wife and 3 daughters are pleased. Most of the time I achieve perfect misery for myself.

What turns you on creatively? Spontaneity, honesty, brutal truth, and an open mind. Also, music turns me on.

[eden] Music turns me on too. It’s great to meet another music snob.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Perfect, awesome, and best come out of my mouth too often. Those words should be used only a few times in a life not a day. Also, I say “dude” a lot and I’m neither a professional surfer nor a cast member of the film The Big Lebowski.

[eden] You’ve even called me dude!

What quality do you most admire in a man? Courageous honesty and being in tune with their feelings. Cry when you’re supposed to, laugh when you should, and express your love as much as possible.

[eden] I love love love this answer.

What quality do you most admire in a woman? Confidence. That’s what women admire in men right? Well I like it when women love their bodies, express their minds, and make themselves forces of nature.

What is your greatest regret? Letting the wrong people inside my heart.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I were patient. I have no patience, at all.

[eden] Somehow I don’t totally believe this. There is a huge amount of patience required to write a book, and you did it.

What is your greatest fear? Something happening to people I love like my wife, kids and close friends. I wish I could guarantee their health and happiness forever.

Which living person do you most admire? My grandfather. He’s 85, lived through the depression, dirt poor, and help win a World War as a teenager in the Navy. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about him. He’s kind, strong, sweet, fair, and cares deeply about everything and everyone.

[eden] Grandfathers are special. Your grandfather sounds amazing.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? My dream job is to teach schoolchildren creative writing. Also, I’d like to be a guitar player in a dirty, sleazy punk blues band on the weekends.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? My 17-year-old daughter. She’s so “together” for a teenager. She’s accomplished, interesting, smart, entertaining, and carefree.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?  Other than my wife and 3 girls? Writing The Ballad of Helene Troy while maintaining a real job, being a father, being a husband, and finding extra work as an online journalist.

[eden] I truly admire all the balls you juggle and keep up in the air, Lance. And each is a wonderful accomplishment.

What is the trait you most deplore in others? Lack of conviction mixed with indecisiveness.

What is your greatest extravagance? I’m a cheap date. I “overspend” on # 2 Ticonderoga pencils, used rock CDs, and Target brand t-shirts. I do drink good beer and have 8 tattoos, so there’s that.

What is one thing you want to do before you die? Travel. I want to write a book in Spain like Hemingway and surf in Australia, dude.

[eden] Okay, dude. ;)

Who is your favorite writer/musician/film director?  Ernest Hemingway, Joe Strummer, Martin Scorsese.

What are some of your favorite curse words? You will get a kick out of this but I don’t curse much. By reading my book, The Ballad of Helene Troy, you wouldn’t believe that. But I get my quirks from my dad. Bad words sound weird and creepy from mine and his mouths. Like my dad I make up words around my kids like goshamickey, bunchahockey, dadgumit, etc.

[eden] Funny…I’m not all that surprised you don’t curse much.

What is your motto? Above all, endure.

Ace, Lance! And endure you have. I’m thrilled to finally have you here AND to see your novel released. The Ballad of Helene Troy will occupy a place of distinction on my bookshelf, right next to Hemingway’s The Garden of Eden.

Readers, please say “hi” to this lovely man and connect to him. Read his work. He is a fantastic writer to know.

Music Monday ~ THE WHO returns with Baba O’Riley

My month of The Who and witty wordplay continues with “Baba O’Riley.”

Nobody smacks a tambourine like Pete Townshend, or blows the harp like Roger Daltry.

The last minute of this performance is so high energy I thought I would have a heart attack.

There’s smacking and blowing in my stories too. Grab a copy of any of my eight erotic books for some high energy of a different kind. It’ll get your heart going—in a good way.

From Every Angle ~ A story written and read for @RBwood’s Word Count Podcast

You can also hear me read this story  on:  Episode #29 of R.B. Wood’s “The Word Count” podcast.

The prompt for this podcast is That’s when the cameras all turned toward me…

*  *  *  *

She slowly pulled herself up off her knees. His penis now appeared like a shriveled earthworm nestled against his scrotum. She crouched on his lap facing him, spreading her thighs on either side of his and looked into his face. When he didn’t respond, she brushed her index finger lightly across the lashes of his closed eyes until he took an audible breath and sighed. With the taste of him still fresh in her mouth, she licked her lips and felt the skin tighten around her chin from the caked semen.

“Did you notice anything?” he asked, opening his eyes to stare at her.

“About what?”

“That mouthful you just swallowed. Did it taste … different?”

She wondered how to answer, not really paying attention to that aspect of him. “Hmm…” She pressed her lips together and thought fast before responding, “Sweet, you tasted really sweet.”

“Good,” he said. “That’s exactly what I was hoping for.”

A smile slowly crossed her face. “Really? What did you do?”

Pineapple, he said. He’d read it improved the taste of a man’s ejaculate and could provide a stronger orgasm. He’d eaten three tins of it in the past week.

“Yes…now that you mention it, it was intense, almost too much for me to swallow.” She lied; he grinned like a ten-year-old boy.

In so many ways he was still a boy—only twenty-two. Theirs was a business arrangement, though she suspected he’d grown rather fond of her in the process. Seeing each other every Thursday for the past two months, he was not only a regular, but her best paying client as well.

He intrigued her with his expensive taste, living in an artist’s loft filled with gadgets. When asked what he did for a living, he said he was trained as a filmmaker but confessed his first loves were gaming and larping, a term she had never heard of before.

“Larping is live action role-playing,” he said. “I’ve always had a love for games, so I’m trying to turn it into a business.”

She admired his creativity but couldn’t understand it as a money-making venture. “Your job would be to play games?”

He shook his head. “No, not play games, develop them.”

The concept was too vague for her and she wasn’t all that interested anyway. She could see he had a talent. Costumes, props, and simulated weaponry including guns, swords, and knives filled his house. As long as he paid her for her hour with him, she didn’t care how he earned a living. For a man who liked the fantasy life, his pedestrian sexual appetite was the only thing that seemed out of character.

He’d sit on his Italian leather couch and watch her undress, clad only in boxer shorts. She’d do a strip tease for him, always wearing the identical pieces of clothing and removing them in the same order—first, her red silk blouse—button by button, then her leather pencil skirt—inch by inch, then her black stiletto heels. Next, she’d slowly roll down her thigh high stockings—starting with the right leg. With only her panties and bra remaining, she’d saunter over to him where he’d fondle her breasts, peel back the cups of her bra, lick the right nipple, suck the left nipple, push her tits together and bury his face in her cleavage. She’d moan—loudly, then pull away to do a painstakingly slow dance where she would fondle herself, remove her panties and bra, and masturbate until she screamed from her orgasm. Not long after, she’d crawl over to him and stare down his erection before taking him deep down her throat.

As with previous visits, today was no different. After she dressed, he paid her in twenty, crisp ten-dollar bills.

“Thank you, Laura for being so wonderful,” he said, walking her to the door.

She looked at him with uncertainty in her eyes. “Anthony, will I be seeing you next week?”

He put his hand on her shoulder and leaned in to kiss her on both cheeks. “I don’t think so. It’s time I move on.”

She wanted to say something, ask him why, but by the time she walked out and turned around, he’d shut the door behind her.

****

Anthony dismantled four tiny cameras strategically mounted in the room. He’d positioned them differently for each of Laura’s visits, ensuring he would capture her performance from every angle.

It was a big job, and he’d be paid handsomely for it. His client was a wealthy man who had specific requirements. Laura had met them to a tee, from her physique to her voice to her technique. Anthony had written the dialogue to elicit certain responses from her, and she had delivered brilliantly. Now, it was time to edit the raw footage of the past two months and turn it into a one-of-a-kind virtual experience.

Get Inside the Mind of Shannon Macleod (@TheMacleod)

I’ve been connected to Shannon for some time now, long before the release of her debut novel, The Celtic Knot back in January of this year. She’s a supportive presence on Twitter and has always been willing to lend an ear. Because of some crazy scheduling, I was not able to have her here sooner, but I’m so happy to feature her now.

Please welcome Shannon Macleod and learn more about the first of many books she has scheduled for publication.

*   *   *   *

Read a blurb from The Celtic Knot (Suit of Cups)

Sometimes, love lasts lifetimes.

Happily, at least ever after. Working as an insurance agent with her college sweetheart and longtime boyfriend, Lucas, she’ll eventually marry him and together they’ll take over the family agency. Then she and Lucas will start raising little insurance agents of their own. But something is missing…

At her best friend’s urging, she decides to do one last wild thing before committing her life to a future of policy endorsements–she takes a part time job reading tarot cards at a local Renaissance Faire theme park. Lucas is completely unimpressed and disdainful of her fascination with the mystical, but has no doubt she’ll settle down once they’re married. Enter Ian Kelly, mural painter, actor and…witch. He and Lily have a chance meeting at the park, and the attraction is immediate. They have a history…a lot of history. Several lifetimes of it, in fact, and their business together is unfinished.

All three have secrets, one of them deadly. Add in heaping helpings of magic, mayhem, Cuban sandwiches, one large Irish family and one very demanding feline for a story of love so strong, it’ll take more than one century to contain it.

Inside Shannon’s Mind

[Shannon] Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Eden – I am delighted to be here!

[eden] Great to have you here, Shannon—finally! Why don’t we start with a ‘work-related’ question.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? As a huge weather junkie, I’d love to be a storm chaser. Maybe a rock star or a pro surfer. The possibilities are endless.

[eden] Not what I expected at all!

What is your idea of perfect happiness? I don’t know that happiness is ever perfect; I think that’s what we all strive for. I’m generally a pretty happy person, so I’m low maintenance – a rainy Saturday afternoon with a good book and fuzzy socks or a sweet, unexpected text always brings a smile to my face.

What turns you on creatively?  The innovative and unusual – I love being challenged to think in terms of abstracts, what ifs and why nots.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? It varies from book to book. I try to pay strict attention to adjectives and phrases. If I remember a phrase from twenty pages ago, I figure my readers will too. The Find tool in MSWord is definitely my friend.

What quality do you most admire in a man? Integrity, followed closely by a sense of humor. Confidence too – it’s sexy as hell.

What quality do you most admire in a woman? The strength to not need anyone else’s opinion or approval.

[eden] Good one.

What is your greatest regret? Not starting to write sooner, definitely. I’ve stayed in a few situations past their expiration date, I’d do that differently. Having said that, I believe in the butterfly effect – every step you took in the past brought you to where you are now. Can’t change anything in the past, so overall – no regrets.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I had to think long and hard on this one…I don’t think there’s anything. I’m not perfect by any means, but I’m perfectly me and I’m cool with that. Maybe tomorrow there will be something, but not today. :)

What is your greatest fear? I’m incredibly claustrophobic. Spiders make me run into things. Blank white screens on my computer when I’m supposed to be putting words on them give me nightmares.

Which living person do you most admire? That would be my mother, an incredibly strong and smart woman. She taught me to be resilient and look for the positive in everything.

[eden] Love this answer.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? It’s a paradox, but I’d love to come back as one of my cats. Their lives are pretty damn cushy, if you ask me.

[eden] You are probably the tenth person I’ve interviewed who would want to come back as a cat. What is it with authors and cats?!

What do you consider your greatest achievement? My kids, hands down. The writing is pretty nice, too.

What is the trait you most deplore in others? Deceitfulness, and that includes deceit by omission. Close behind that is bullying, rudeness and people who assume I’m slow because I have a Southern accent.

[eden] Slow? Never! I’m charmed by Southern accents. ;)

What is your greatest extravagance? Ooh, there’s a couple – hot shoes, good books. iTunes loves me. My only saving grace is that I love thrift stores and shop there often, so I think it balances out. I have yet to find a pair of Jimmy Choo’s at the local Goodwill, but I’m still trying. It’s like my Holy Grail.

What is one thing you want to do before you die? I want to retrace my ancestors steps back to Kilkenny, Ireland then up to the Highlands of Scotland, where I’ll dance in the stone circle of Callanish under the moonlight. Maybe naked – depends on the weather.

[eden] I’ve been to Kilkenny and traveled throughout Ireland, some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

Who is your favorite writer/musician/film director?  My favorite writers are Diana Gabaldon, Karen Marie Moning, Shelly Laurenston and Virginia Henley. Tim Burton tops my list for directors – I love comic darkness. My favorite musician/bands changes daily, as my tastes are very eclectic. My playlists run the gamut from the Beatles to Nine Inch Nails. When I was writing The Celtic Knot: Suit of Cups I listened to a lot of Gaelic Storm, the Wolfe Tones and Loreena McKennitt. For the sequel The Gypsy Ribbon: Suit of Wands (coming 2014 from Lyrical Press) I listened to a lot of AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and Winger. It just depends on what I’m doing/writing at the moment.

What are some of your favorite curse words? Jaysus, I love ‘em all – the more creative and colorful, the better.

What is your motto?  Tada gan iarracht – that’s the Gaelic for “nothing without effort.” If you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to get it. That works both ways – don’t expect it if you’re not out there busting your ass for it daily.

[eden] Fantastic motto, especially when you say it in Gaelic!

[Shannon] Thanks again for having me as your guest – you are awesome! MWAH! xoxo

[eden] I’m so happy we finally got to do this, Shannon. You’re every bit as delightful as I knew you would be.

Readers, please say “hi” to this lovely woman and connect to her. Find out about her upcoming releases too!

Allegories of the Tarot via @netta50

My wonderful friend, Annetta Ribken, who also happens to be an author and my editor has outdone herself!

She’s rounded up twenty-two amazing writers for a one-of-a-kind project. Twenty-two of us, can you imagine? And she did it in just a little over a day! I was thrilled to be invited as part of this esteemed group.

Look at her, would you ever dare to refuse this woman?

Annetta with glasses

Each of us will write a story based on the Major Arcana of the Tarot. There will be a range of genres, styles, and voices. You may know some of these writers or have read their work.

The reality of many joint ventures for writers is they never come to fruition unless there is a plan in place from beginning to end. Let me tell you, Annetta has covered all bases. In less than a week of my acceptance to be part of this project, she’s put together an IndieGoGo campaign to get it off the ground. Wow!

Go on, click the image and view the incredible video!

allegories of the tarot

Annetta is unwavering when it comes to work ethic, forging alliances, and honoring her commitments. This is a HUGE project, one she’s passionate about, and now she’s lit a fire under everyone’s ass, and trust me, I’m feeling the heat—but in a good way!

I’m excited to be writing with friends—old and new, and can’t wait to share my story with you.

Check out the project on IndieGoGo.

Watch the video.

Connect to all the authors involved.

Make a contribution and receive excellent perks in return.

If you can’t donate monetarily, please share the campaign with your network.

The more who know about it, the better.

We have sixty days to collect $5000. Every penny will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.

Oh … as for my Tarot card of choice, it’s “The Lovers.”

Was there ever a doubt?

An Awards Show Like No Other @fempornawards #fpa2013

In four days, I’ll be attending the 8th Annual Feminist Porn Awards.

Good For Her is Toronto’s premiere erotic store and sponsors the Feminist Porn Awards.

It’s the third year in a row I’ve been invited to judge a wide selection of films and websites for the show. Many people have asked me: “Is feminist porn different from traditional porn?”

The answer is “YES.”

Here’s how Good for Her answers the question.

Nominees must meet at least 2 of the following criteria:

1) Women and/or traditionally marginalized people were involved in the direction, production and/or conception of the work.

2) The work depicts genuine pleasure, agency and desire for all performers, especially women and traditionally marginalized people.

3) The work expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film, challenges stereotypes and presents a vision that sets the content apart from most mainstream pornography.  This may include depicting a diversity of desires, types of people, bodies, sexual practices, and/or an anti-racist or anti-oppression framework throughout the production.

And of course it must be hot! Visit Good for Her to learn more.

You can find out more about the 8th Annual Feminist Porn Awards, where I’ll also be presenting an award.

Tickets are still available online. They’re going fast, so grab them now! This year, gala night has a NEW venue – the Capitol Event Theatre.

Look forward to seeing you there!
