Get Inside the Mind of Christoph Paul (@ChristophPaul_)
Christoph Paul is a man of many talents—poet, musician, and author. His book, which I recently finished and reviewed is a terrific mix of humor, satire, and porn references. Yes. You heard me, porn. He should know.
Find out why.
Please welcome all the many passions of Christoph Paul.

This book is a modern Leaves of Grass (Google that shit, Philistines); I, the writer, will celebrate myself, my mistakes, and the Americans and non-Americans I have met along the way that have showed me great knowledge. And with great knowledge comes great responsibility; I think Spiderman said that, or my teenage rehab counselor. Not sure, but both were wise.
It is wisdom that these highs and lows have brought me, from traveling and bouncing around in my early youth until I embraced myself as a great artist and went for an MA in Creative Writing (I was too lazy to get the “F” part of the degree) while managing a porn store in northeast DC.
Like my life, this book will be a journey, like Lord of the Rings but there is no Mordor and I will have to explain that a personal massager is a medical device. Yet this is a simple story of a young man making use of his creative talents while making a living, even as he finds the great truths of the humanities.
There is no target audience. Like Shakespeare I am out to reach the intellectuals of high art, the common man, and the men and women who just like dick jokes. What follows are my attempts to give and find knowledge of the arts of all types. Like Jesus I helped and hung with the sinners—sharing their stories and my stories as I created art.
My goal (which I have achieved) when I started out was to grow into a great bard who can touch and raise western and eastern civilization, answer existential questions, empathize with all of humanity, and, finally, not have to work at a porn store to sneak in writing.

Inside Christoph’s Mind
[eden] You know I’m a fan of wordplay and love the title of your book, so let me ask firstly…
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Any kind of hip hopish slogans that a white person with faux-hawk shouldn’t say: swag, that shit is tight, word is bond, for real though, ballin, she got that onion booty, I’d hit that, and skeet skeet.
[eden] Definitely not what I was expecting. Is this English? Now I feel old!
What is your idea of perfect happiness? It would be a doing a combo of my favorite things in a 24-hour period. Simple stuff like having an awesome breakfast (if any one has seen the TV show “Parks and Recreation” I share Ron Swanson’s love of a good breakfast food and brunettes), writing some good pages for a project I feel really passionate about, playing some guitar and singing my songs in key, later watching a movie that blows me away, read a little bit of a book and feel the same thing as the movie, after see a band I really love and last have some really great sex and an awesome sandwich to end that night…in that order.
[eden] Fantastic, I’d skip the sandwich
What turns you on creatively? A combination of excitement and envy (a good kind, not in the 7 deadly sense.) It usually is when I read something that I just love and wish I thought of it first. I remember reading this book called “The Lost Memory of Skin” by Russell Banks and I was so impressed that the writer could make me feel empathy for all these morally reprehensible men. Even though I write a lot of humor I love dark material, that is the stuff that gets me going and turns me on. A good tragedy gets me excited but still a great comedy gets me going too if done really well.
What quality do you most admire in a man? A renaissance man, I love a dude who can talk sports for thirty minutes and then talk literature the other half. In the end, though I admire a man who is comfortable with himself and will not apologize for it. That is a guy I want to have a beer with.
[eden] I would think NYC is full of them. No?
How about in a woman? Independence, I love independent women who follow their own passion and have a great sense of humor.
What is your greatest regret? That is tough one…I’m not one for regrets but I do have one that I think about every once in awhile and might even write about: it is not kissing this girl I was falling for while she stood in elevator and I stood outside it. We just kept talking like we didn’t want to leave each other, it was really romantic and it would have been a perfect time to have a first kiss but I just didn’t do it…I would also say picking the wrong female bass player for my old band but I have made peace with that and I’m happy with focusing more on writing/song writing than performing.
[eden] Sigh … That first regret is bittersweet. You should definitely write about it.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Be more present and king like (ordered using Jungian psychology) I can be very scattered and forget very basic things. I am at my best when I either have someone reminding me to dot the I’s and cross the t’s or I am making an extra effort to do those things myself.
What is your greatest fear? Dying a really horrible slow painful death and aliens doing probe stuff. It is a tie.
Which living person do you most admire? Kanye West, I think he is brilliant and I have a theory that he acts like such a jerk to push himself to be the best at what he does. His music and lyrics are really creative and I love greatness in art and I really feel envious of the art he makes.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I would actually love to coach a sport like football. This other good friend of mine who is also a writer friend feels the way. That if we do really well with writing we’d just like to coach high school football for fun. I am secretly a big jock who just happens to love literature and music.
[eden] A jock, eh? I would’ve never thought that about you.
If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? I would be like to be an animal. A happy wiener dog hooking up with wiener girl dogs and playing fetch with a good owner.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? Sticking with what I set out to do: Work full-time, play in a band and gig around New York, and write a book I felt proud of. I ended up getting exhaustion, depression and leaving the job and the band but I did it and was able to do it for a while and that was an achievement of just pure Nietzsche-like will.
[eden] It’s a lot to juggle, hon, congratulations on achieving so much. I’m sure this is only the beginning.
What is the trait you most deplore in others? Taking advantage of generosity and opportunities and not doing anything with them.
What is your greatest extravagance? Going out to eat and by that I mean Thai food and Sushi.
What is one thing you want to do before you die? I have traveled so I have to say be a nude model for painters/drawers in a warm room.
Who is your favorite writer/musician/film director? Oh man, this is toughest out of all the questions. For writer it has to be Tom Perrota, Little Children is still my favorite book. Musician it is Trent Reznor-all of his albums I will never get sick of, and director and Chan-Wook Park who made my favorite movie ‘Old Boy’. He did this short too in ‘3 Extremes’ I loved. He did his first American film ‘Stoker’ and it was beautiful.
What are some of your favorite curse words? I feel bad because I can’t remember the comedian’s name but he came up with a nicer way to say the C-word which is ‘Connecticut Muffins’ which is great.
[eden] Cute.
What is your motto? Follow your passion by following The 3 p’s: patience, passion, and perseverance.
[eden] So true, thanks Christoph for joining me today. It was lovely to meet a renaissance man like you
.

Award-winning YA author @PattiLarsen talks S-E-X
The incredibly talented Patti Larsen and I have been on each other’s blogs many times over the past two years, and I marvel at her success. No, let me rephrase, I am in complete A-W-E of her.
She has a few books out, yeah, a few—try over twenty-five and counting! Find them all here.
Today, I’m thrilled to help Patti with her Family Magic Bestseller Adventure.
She is working very hard this month to coax Family Magic onto the best seller lists of Amazon, the New York Times, and USA Today.
Help her by purchasing a copy of Family Magic!
Now, let’s read her excellent guest post penned just for my readers.

To S-E-X or not to S-E-X:
A YA Writer’s Conundrum
I admire authors like the lovely and talented Eden who can write about S-E-X without blushing, beautifully and with passion tied to incredible story.
I’m not one of them. I’m happy to read erotica, enjoy it immensely, but the writing of it… makes my inner teen girl turn mushy with embarrassment.
I think that’s part of the reason I write young adult. When I started the Hayle Coven Novels with Family Magic , the lead character, Sydlynn Hayle, was sixteen and, for the most part, pretty innocent about boys. As a witch hiding among normals, forced to move from town to town thanks to magic “issues” forcing her coven to uproot in the middle of the night more often than not, Syd struggled with making friends, let alone finding someone to fall in love with.
Over the course of the twenty book series, Syd has grown up, gone to college and developed love interests. Forcing me to (gulp) address certain “situations” of an adult nature. While keeping in mind I’m a young adult writer.
It’s a tough line to walk. Making sure the content is accurate, real and reflects what would happen to an eighteen-year-old on her own for the first time, in love and wanting to explore her sexuality. All while keeping it PG rated enough my younger readers won’t be exposed to something I worry is inappropriate for their age group. Considering I have pre-teens reading the series, not to mention certain expectations of wholesomeness (Syd’s favorite curse is Oh. My. Swearword.) created throughout the Hayle Coven Novels, it took me some arguing with my amazing editor, Annetta Ribken to finally just go ahead and let Syd have sex.
No, the world didn’t fall apart. And she’s continued to explore her options. I’ve been careful to increase the heat level just enough to tempt, but without full exposure. Am I being a prude? I don’t know. It’s honestly something I fight with every time I write one of her books. After all, sex and sexuality are normal and healthy. But I can’t get past the idea young teens are exposed to far too much and in unhealthy ways. Not something I want to perpetuate.
Maybe that’s an argument for me to add sex to my books. To show the reality of relationships. For instance, Syd’s first sexual experience ends with her heart broken. She loves him, but learns love isn’t always enough. It’s not all sunshine and butterflies. And just because she slept with him doesn’t guarantee a happy ending.
I have a new series coming out in July, based on the same Universe, but with new characters. Targeted at New Adult, or college aged readers. And they will be more grown up, with more sexual content, swearing, adult situations. I’m curious about exploring such topics, with an eye for reality, not the perfect bubble of “if I love him and give him everything, he’ll be mine forever.” But I’m also nervous. First, I seriously flush every time I think about writing a real sex scene (you should see my cheeks). But I’m also a little worried about my young readers. Will they graduate from Syd to Zoe with the same expectations and stumble into work they might not be ready for? I know there are a great number of books out there targeting teens with more explicit scenes than I’ve written—or will write—but I feel responsible.
I don’t think it’s something I’ll ever fully resolve. Instead, my plan is to simply forge ahead with as much compassion and caring added to this part of my writing as I can. Like the friend who hands her bestie tissues and agrees he’s an asshole, I’ll be here to nurse my characters through their broken hearts.
And blushing.
~ [eden] Thanks so much Patti for a fabulous post. Writing sex is never easy, and I’ll let you in on a secret. ( I blush too.
)
Here’s wishing you every success to crack all the best seller lists! Readers, go and grab your copy of Family Magic now!

About the Author: You’re not looking for my polished bio, huh? You sure you want more? The real dirty, down deep, nitty gritty? Fair enough. Here goes: I’m a card-carrying nerd. It’s taken years to admit it. I’m also a hermit in a writing basement who prefers solitude to people (cats always welcome). I’m a writing fiend who hears the voices of teenagers and blushes at the S-E-X parts. I don’t sleep very well. Ever. My mind is too busy. I am a feline loving married woman who could easily end up a crazy cat lady if my husband would let me. I am a paradigm shifter, a believer in self and my own personal power. I see everything in black and white until the gray is explained to me. I am a fiercely loyal friend, a confidant and a Tarot card reader and intuitive. I am a proud geek fangirl, a total dweeb and can’t dance to save my soul. I am terrified of heights and challenge that fear every chance I get. Oh, and I’m the Creator. The Queen of my own Destiny. I love that.

A short time ago, I was gang-interviewed by the crew of Live from the Morgue, a weekly internet radio show, which airs Saturday nights from 9 PM – Midnight EST on More Like Radio.
I had a pun-filled time, rife with sexual innuendos as host Steve (WolfX), author Susan Rose, Riff Maxwell, and the very lovely Lord Dark Claw in Oz grilled me on topics like porn, my style of writing, and how I am influenced by older dead men.
You can listen to me in the final 45 minutes of their outrageous show via the show link or on the June 8th episode on iTunes.
Enjoy,

Get Inside the Mind of John T. Trigonis (@Trigonis)
I’m very excited to interview the multi-talented John T. Trigonis. He was referred to me by friend and indie film supporter, Marcella Selbach, whom I had the pleasure to speak with last year. Marcella could not say enough good things about John, and now I know why.
He’s a poet, author, filmmaker, and the list goes on and on! Find out more about John’s philosophy on life, his thoughts on Taoism, and what he’s learned about crowd fundraising.
****
In John’s own words …
I’m a published poet, writer and storyteller, DIY filmmaker, freelance professor, and author of Crowdfunding for Filmmakers: The Way to a Successful Film Campaign. Cat lover, coffee aficionado, wine enthusiast, and comic book geek, as well.

Book summary
Crowdfunding for Filmmakers centers around offering practical information, tips, and tactics about how to launch a successful film campaign by going with the flow of traditional models of fundraising, utilizing today’s technological and social innovations, and augmenting each with an added personal touch. The book examines various ways to meet and exceed one’s crowdfunding goal through chapters that home in on team building, audience outreach, and crowdfunder etiquette, along with a section containing case studies from successful film campaigns, as well as a few unsuccessful ones and what they could’ve done to remedy their unfavorable outcomes.

Inside John’s Mind
[eden] Thrilled to meet you John. I’m going to mix it up a bit with you because I loved your answers. Tell me …
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’d want to live less inside my own mind, which I’m doing less of everyday. My education had made me a bit cynical for a while, as education often does, an unfortunate side effect of the attainment of knowledge. But I’m learning to see the world a bit more like Winnie the Pooh –– positive, taking one small step at a time to better oneself and the world around you. Interesting enough, I learned this was my trouble after reading an issue of The New Teen Titans, a favorite series of mine, in which Wally West, also known as Kid Flash, was accused of letting life fly by at high speeds and never pausing to really appreciate what’s all around him.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Writing some life into a good idea for a story; holding my Lady’s hand; a tasty cup of Intelligentsia Coffee; a tall glass of Alamos; Any film noir starring Bogie or Cagney; helping others; breathing easy.
[eden] Love the diversity of your response.
What turns you on creatively? Accidental words –– sometimes I hear someone speaking, and I’ll get their words mixed up and it’ll sound like something else, something cool and interesting; a neologism, perhaps; something I can work into a poem or script or short film.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “The bottom line is…” and I’ve no idea why I overuse it, but I do.
What quality do you most admire in a man? Knowing the difference between a fedora and a trilby.
[eden] Ha! I have a weakness for a man in a hat
What quality do you most admire in a woman? Drive –– I like to be inspired, and nothing’s more inspirational (and sexy) than a woman who wants to do great things in life, even if she doesn’t quite know what those great things are just yet.
What is your greatest regret? If Taoism has taught me anything, it’s that everything happens for a reason, and that reason is always a good one, even if at the moment it seems quite the contrary. The Universe has our best interests in mind, and I can’t regret anything because everything I’ve been through has brought me to this moment, and I wouldn’t change this moment for anything in the world. When you believe this fully, you rid yourself of even the idea of having regret, as I have done.
What is your greatest fear? Stepping forward only to realize I’ve taken two steps backwards. I want to make sure I progress in everything I do, always moving ahead toward something great.
Which living person do you most admire? Eddie Vedder, lead singer/songwriter of Pearl Jam. He’s been my hero and inspiration ever since I first listened to “Jeremy” back in the early 1990s. He’s a person who’s able to express himself in a very unique way, and who always wants to help people all over the world.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Comic book writer, which I’m on route to becoming with two comics in the works –– a screenplay-turned-comic script for my feature-length story A Beautiful Unlife and another for a horror noir tale called Siren’s Calling. I figured since I’ve loved reading comic books since I was in grade school, maybe I should try my hand at writing them.

Siren’s Calling ~ Illustration by Lauren Clemente
If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? A fern –– after a life as creative and non-stop as the one I’ve been living, it might be nice to just sit around and do nothing, as long as my owner waters me regularly and keeps me in a place near the sun (I trust the Universe will give me a good owner, or at least better than I’ve been nursing my Dad’s old fern back to a fruitful green life.)
[eden] Hmm, no one has ever given this answer before, but I like your reasoning.
What is your greatest extravagance? Eating out (just about) every night. Now that I’m working five days a week with Indiegogo, I don’t have time to cook during the week, and my weekends I keep reserved for writing or shooting a new film or video project, so eating out is all I can do, despite it being a bit expensive.
Greatest achievement? I’ve had many great achievements, from graduating Brooklyn College with my MFA in poetry to making two films I’m most proud of –– Perfekt and Cerise –– but I’m most proud of getting my book Crowdfunding for Filmmakers picked up and published by Michael Wiese Productions.
[eden] Fantastic, and I love these photos you provided too.

Poster illustrated and designed by Lauren Clemente.
Tell me the trait you most deplore in others. Putting other people’s happiness before their own; in this way, they’ll never attain true happiness.
What is one thing you want to do before you die? Take a tour of Greece. Both my parents were from Greece, so I want to head out there for a couple weeks and see everything that I used to teach about back when I was a humanities professor.
Who is your favorite writer/musician/film director? My favorite writer is Douglas Adams; my favorite musician is Tom Waits (only ‘cause I mentioned Eddie a few questions earlier) for his lyrics and gravel-rasp voice; and my favorite film director is Kryszstoff Kieslowski (The Double Life of Veronica, Three Colors Trilogy) for his masterful storytelling abilities.
Any favorite curse words? Me and the F-bomb go way back, though you’d never know it by reading my Twitter and Facebook feeds.
[eden] I’m not one for cursing on public timelines either.
Finally, John, tell us your motto. Go with the Way of the Universe. Always.
Nice! Thanks for your wonderful and thoughtful answers. I do hope we connect when you’re in Toronto. It’d be lovely to meet you.

In Praise of British Slang ~ A Poem
A short time ago, I had the privilege of speaking to an English author who is also a wonderful poet. During our conversation, he asked if I was still writing poetry. The question caught me off guard. I don’t write poetry regularly and have not done so since working on my current novel.
It got me thinking though, because I adored his English accent and way of speaking. He used words and phrasing I never hear in conversation with friends—which I found both amusing and endearing. As Canadians, we have adopted British words in our day-to-day language, but there are many we don’t use.
It also amazed me to discover how much of British slang sounds vulgar, even when the words are not. Some of the words in my poem may be regional or outdated, but they entertained me nonetheless. Brits can comment and tell me if I’ve made a twit of myself.
I hope you enjoy this short poem inspired by a special Englishman. I know he fancies wordplay and has a healthy sense of humour (that’s humour with a second ‘u’ since I’m being British and all).

In Praise of British Slang
The dog’s bollocks is the best
But bollocks alone is rubbish
And rubbish is actually garbage
Don’t speak it; throw it in a bin
If you spend a penny in England
Expect to be in the loo
But if you get diddled while in there
Check that you still have all your pennies
No point fannying around
As the arse is the ass
And the fanny is not the arse
It’s the female naughty bits
And what of the John Thomas or Todger?
Found on a mate, a bloke, or a codger
So many names to describe a plonker
There should be as many words for a lughole
You may think I’m barmy or bladdered
I’m neither, just a wee bit knackered
In need of a good eight hours
And I’ll be full of beans again
Yes I do love many things British
The language, the slang, the humour
A dry cocktail of irony and wit
Perfect for taking the piss

Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way,

Get Inside the Mind of Sheilagh G. Lee (@SweetSheil)
S.G. Lee, or Sheilagh is a lovely author I met on Twitter. She’s supportive of her fellow writers and wears a perpetual smile. It’s my pleasure to highlight her work here today.
Please give a warm welcome to Sheilagh G. Lee.
Who is S. G. Lee?
S.G.Lee was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. She is the mother of two grown daughters and happily married. She is an avid reader of mysteries and paranormal novels. Her favourite writers are Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie, Kelley Armstrong and Charlaine Harris. Growing up she feasted on tales of family history, and other imaginative stories; as her family continued the long tradition of passing on stories orally. Those tales and more of her own are itching to be told so she has been putting pen to paper and fingers to computer to get them all down resulting in this first novel with many more stories to come.
