Get Inside the Mind of Podcaster @LydiaAswolf
I first met Lydia Aswolf when she interviewed friend and podcaster, Casey Ryan. Lydia has a wonderful way of drawing information out of her guests. She is a psychic medium, an aspiring author, and a strong advocate for writers.
She is also a popular presence on social media, especially Twitter, where she hands out the most delicious tweets ever!
Please enjoy this wonderful interview with Lydia and tune in to her podcast, Lydia’s Literary Lowdown. It’s a great show, and I’ll be making an appearance on it shortly.

Lydia’s Literary Lowdown gives you the lowdown on what’s making heads turn in publishing today. Trends, best sellers, what will be hot, (and not) on the publishing scene next. Literary agents and editors telling us what they’d like to see in their inboxes. Aspiring authors speaking up about their victories, defeats, and unrelenting spirit to sprint ahead and blow dry the ink on their publishing contracts, already. Screenwriters working on that next great film. Poets introducing us to new, exciting prose. Artists of all stripes, supporting other artists. Guests both traditionally and self published pop by to tell us about their latest offerings. We talk book to movie adaptations. The latest hot button topics and scandals taking place in the teeming world of tomes. Social media and marketing experts give advice on how to build that all important platform. The latest writing contests. The nightmares turned into dreams come true overnight. The Lowdown prides itself on welcoming the only crowd you want to hang out with: the write one.
****
Inside Lydia’s Mind
[eden] Thrilled to have you here, Lydia, let’s start off by telling everyone your motto …
[Lydia] Life doesn’t light you on fire and then hand you the marshmallows to toast over it.
[eden] You are whacky! How about your idea of perfect happiness?
[Lydia] Self cleaning bathrooms. Magnetic socks that never lose a mate. Diets that involve eating only chocolate. Seriously, though, my idea of perfect happiness will always be people reading what I put out there and totally getting it. I can’t imagine a finer feeling than that.
[eden] I can certainly relate.
What turns you on creatively? My past. Probably egotistical, but it’s where I get most of my ideas. One of my manuscripts sprang from the sad fact that, as a kid, I used to walk around crossing my eyes at people. Not being rude, believe it or not. Somewhere along the way, I got it into my head that if I crossed my eyes at someone, I was blessing them. Another sprang from my fascination with the Bible. Yes, the Bible. There’s a verse that heavily implies one poor sap has to walk the Earth forever. I played around with the idea, came up with a decent premise, and went for it.
Do you have words or phrases you overuse? Just is number one on the list. Of late, I’ve overused amiably. Beatifically also comes to mind. And semi-colons. Oh, how I love my semi-colons. I’m still looking for a twelve step or cure to escape their siren call.
What quality do you most admire in a man? Honesty. Brutal honesty is preferable. Should I ask…and I will ask, if my ass looks huge in any given pair of jeans, I need the truth. Because, as a rule, I prefer to avoid wandering around looking like two pigs are having a fight in the arse of my jeans. I married an extremely honest man who looks like he’ll kill first and ask no questions whatsoever. I’m a very lucky woman.
[eden]
Lucky indeed!
How about in a woman? I don’t discriminate. Honesty is key. Let’s face it: I’m a walking flaw encased in human flesh. This is good, in that I don’t have the time nor inclination to judge others. Bad, in that when, at the tender age of 32, I fell out of a tree feeding birds, I could have used an honest woman to tell me not to climb the tree in the first place.
[eden] I would have told you. I’m a big fan of brutal honesty, sometimes too much so.
Name me your greatest regret. Frogs. That’s right, frogs. I was raised in a rural area. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up, so we hunted for extra food. I was five or six when my parents told my twin brother and me that we should get some frogs legs for dinner. We caught twenty or so, went to the prep shed, and started cutting their legs off. After a time, we looked into the bucket, prepared to take the frogs out and put them back by the lake. I clearly remember saying to my twin, in total mystification, “Why aren’t their legs growing back?” And then my brother and I looked at one another in complete and utter horror. I will never be able to look at a frog without wincing and then mentally (and sometimes verbally) apologizing for the lost lives of their cruelly slain bretheren. It’s not only my greatest regret. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever done in my life.
[eden] Sad and poignant. I don’t even kill insects, so I know what you mean.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Holding a grudge. I don’t forget, and I rarely forgive.
What is your greatest fear? Deer. Seriously, deer. When I was eight months pregnant with my first son, a young buck ran right into the side of our car. We were doing 50mph at the time, and he hit my side. Nearly killed my son and me. Not terribly long ago, I jumped about six feet straight up into the air when we were touring a rental home and I rounded the back yard to find a target dummy of a deer staring back at me. I didn’t scream though. At least give me points for that. Night driving is fraught with peril. My eyes nervously dart from side to side in anticipation of another deer returning to finish off the job.
[eden] In Canada, we also have moose, and they are HUGE.
Which living person do you most admire? At present, the Pope. Don’t get me wrong, here. I’m not Catholic. But this is a guy who’s clearly got the whole concept of understanding and acceptance down. He (and the church) have a long way to go, but at least he’s modeling how it should be, as opposed to how it has been.
What profession other than your own would you like to try? Well, writing. It isn’t my day job, you know. But if I could write and do something else, I’d really, really like to get a reality show going. Yeah, roll your eyes. But you haven’t seen drama or excitement until you’ve seen me storm a psychic/medium/palmist shop and take them to task for scamming their clients. Brutally. Two years ago I had my money thrown into my face and was escorted roughly out of a palmist office for doing just that. A friend who was with me at the time found it highly rewarding. She suggested a reality show based on what she witnessed.
[eden] Do it!
If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? A book. Midlist, probably. Maybe lower. That way, I could lay around and do nothing but doze all day.
What is your greatest achievement? Escaping the commonly held view as a kid of who I’d become when I got older. According to just about everyone in my hometown, I was going to turn into a chain smoking, hard drinking whore who popped out kid after kid and subsisted solely on welfare. It’s a whole lot of fun to visit and see shock bloom on the faces of just about everyone I run into. A whole lot of fun.
[eden] NO WAY are you a chain smoker.
What trait do you most deplore in others? Disloyalty. I can’t stand it. If I’ve got your back, I’ve got nothing bad to say behind it.
[eden] I like this, very much.
Greatest extravagance? Books. I am, and always will be a book whore. The more, the merrier, as they say.
Name one thing you want to do before you die. Get published.
Trite? Probably. But other writers know what I’m saying. You put years into perfecting, polishing, writing, revising, rewriting, etc. To get published….well, it’s tremendous validation of all the hard work and perserverance it takes to get anywhere in publishing. Not to mention some validation that you have a smidgen of talent. I’d like that. Like it a lot.
[eden] Not trite at all.
Do you have a favorite writer/musician/film director? Depends on the genre. Maeve Binchy is one. I think she was underappreciated for her writing talent, and oh, how I mourn her passing. Stephen King is a horror master. Jane Austen defined so much of what is out there today. She’s a perennial favorite of mine. Musician? Torn. Kurt Cobain comes to mind, but so does Billie Joe Armstrong and the Green Day gang. Film director…old school answer, here. Stephen Spielberg, hands down.
Favorite curse words? You name it, I’ve said it. I enjoy telling unsuspecting bystanders that I could be a tenured professor. My course? Lecturing sailors on how to curse effectively and productively.
[eden] Ha, Lydia! I’m sure you can teach those sailors a thing or two. Thank you so much for joining me and sharing about yourself.
Readers, please say “hi” to Lydia and if you’re on Twitter, look out for her wonderful #tweettreats. If you’re lucky, you may get one!

Satirist @ChristophPaul_ releases GREAT WHITE HOUSE for FREE
Christoph Paul is a talented writer of satire, and he’s putting out his third book—on Friday the 13th!
You may recall I interviewed him not long ago when he released The Passion of the Christoph. If you missed that interview, hop over and catch it now.
Tomorrow, he releases the third book in his satirical trilogy called: Great White House, co-written with Brody Thomas. He describes it as “Sharknado” meets “White House Down” with a South Park feel.
And the great thing is:
He’s releasing it FREE!
Grab your copy Friday, Sept. 13th!
Don’t wait for the price to go up.
****
After seeing this awesome cover, there are only two important questions you must ask yourself: Why would you not want to see American politicians be eaten by sharks? The other is how do the great white sharks attack the great White House?
That second question gets answered as Paul and Thomas (the writers of the novella, not a folk group) tell a tale that involves an angry Chinese President Xi Jinping, weather control, PETA, America’s debt, and The Chinese Task Force including: President Obama, Vice President, John ‘The Crying Man’ Boehner, Eric Cantor, Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Bachmann, Ben Bernanke, Harry Reid, Paul Ryan, Tim Scott, Tim Geithner, Rand Paul, Bernie Sanders, John McCain, Chuck Schumer, and Marc Rubio (John Kerry was supposed to be there but is stuck on his yacht during the freak storm that let out the sharks.)
As the story unfolds it is a surreal and satirical South Park-like combo of “Sharknado” meets “White House Down” &/or “Olympus Has Fallen” (and any other movie/TV shows with black charismatic presidents in danger) where these rival politicians must find ways to learn to work together to survive. China’s ‘loan sharks’ are ready to have America pay its debt in blood as these sharks don’t see Red or Blue—they are bipartisan human beefeaters.

Awaiting my Religion ~ A story for @RBwood’s Word Count Podcast
You can also hear me read this story on: Episode #34 of R.B. Wood’s “The Word Count” podcast.
The prompt for this podcast is “The Oracle smiled and said “Ah. I have been waiting for you…”
* * * *
He stood larger than life in a white robe, his long, dark hair and beard contrasted pale blue eyes. A thick leather strap around his neck supported his instrument of love. I made out the details of the ring on his finger as he quietly stroked his massive tool.
I licked my lips, my forehead beaded in perspiration. Jesus, I thought.
No … I mean really, he looked like Jesus with an otherworldly presence about him.
I could not take my eyes off him as he magically floated over a glass surface, which sealed off the ocean-like floor beneath it.
Impressive, probably the best entrance I’ve ever seen given its elaborate design. I had only witnessed one other entry that compared, one with spectacular use of illumination. Flashing colors that spun so quickly, they made me dizzy. I had to close my eyes the entire time so the light would not blind me.
Anyway, back to Jesus.
I swallowed my jitters and breathed heavily—in and out, in and out, in and out, willed myself to relax and get ready, shook with anticipation.
I heard women screaming. I even heard men screaming. Desperate and impatient bodies crashed against one another, exchanging sweat and possibly other bodily fluids. How would I know? I could barely turn my head to see beside me. What if a riot broke out and I was trampled to death? Who would find me? Who would feed my fish?
Then suddenly, from up above, Jesus looked at me and smiled, or perhaps he looked at the girl beside me. It didn’t matter. In my mind, it was me he spoke to.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said. I heard him loud and clear, and so did everyone else because all hell broke loose around me. The mob pushed me forward. I no longer cared about my safety or my fish. I jumped up and down with hands flailing in the air, my body squeezed on all sides by hysterical and devoted followers.
He launched into his hit song with an ear-splitting power chord. The notes reverberated off the stadium’s ceiling and fell upon the masses.
My Guitar God – he spoke to me, only me … me, me, me.
Rock on baby.

“Prolific author Billy Ray Chitwood does it again, creating yet another gritty and spine-tingling five-star murder mystery full of carnage and romance. In his latest release, The Reluctant Savage, Mr. Chitwood expertly creates suspense as he develops his flawed-yet-likable characters. After protagonist Billy Jay Campbell is set up to take the fall for a grisly and especially depraved massacre, he must prove his innocence, uncover the powerful hidden evil behind the deaths, and figure out his own heart which is torn between two equally beautiful and loving women. Masterful writing by the author of the Bailey Crane Mystery Series. Bravo, Mr. Chitwood. You keep us coming back for more.”

Read my review of HUNGRY GHOSTS by @JohnDolanAuthor
Last week, I announced the release of John Dolan’s second book in his Time, Blood and Karma series called Hungry Ghosts.
I enjoyed a short trip away from the city and had a couple of days to read the book. You can find my review below and on:
Amazon US | Amazon UK | Goodreads
The “anti-hero” is a character archetype that dates back to the tragedies of Greek theatre. Unlike the traditional hero who is morally upright, the anti-hero usually has a flawed moral character, more interested in getting the job done than doing it ethically. Sometimes, the flaws are simply human failings as determined by a conventional society—a philanderer, an alcoholic, a smoker.
I don’t believe in heroes, but I believe in David Braddock, the enigmatic anti-hero who returns in John Dolan’s latest release, Hungry Ghosts.
Everyone Burns, which launched the Time, Blood and Karma series, captivated me based on the strength of its characters. I invested in their lives and wanted to know more about their connections to one other. Along with discovering how morally ambiguous human beings can be, I found myself immersed in a sophisticated plot of intrigue in beautiful Thailand.
Hungry Ghosts expands on and refines the characterization. Many familiar faces return, and this time, we hear their voices through their own lens. The switch from David Braddock’s first person viewpoint in Everyone Burns to multiple points of view in this book had to be a challenge to write. It could easily have turned into a “dog’s breakfast” in the hands of a lesser writer.
So, how does Mr. Dolan get away with it?
He imbues each character with just enough detail to reel us in, and then he allows them to speak. Whether he is speaking as the power-hungry Thai Police Chief, the demure Balinese housekeeper, or the playful English sister-in-law, the transitions are seamless and the voices, believable. The recurring theme of hungry ghosts (in its many iterations) haunts everyone, reinforces karmic interconnectivity, and moves the story forward.
Multiple plot threads are dangled, and at the nexus of it all hangs David Braddock. Though still a smarty-pants, he has tempered somewhat. In other words, he has matured.
Characters who emanate moral purity don’t ring true to us any more, if they ever did. It’s not who we see around us, and I dare say, neither is it who we see when we look in the mirror. The longer we live, the more we realize how fragile humanity is. Sometimes it feels broken.
David Braddock feels broken too, but we desperately wish to see him healed. We cheer for him and want him to succeed because of his human frailties, not in spite of them.
Hungry Ghosts is seductive and exotic, yet easily accessible because of its unforgettable anti-hero.
I applaud Mr. Dolan for creating David Braddock. I can’t wait to find out what he does next.

In Spring into Summer, a collection of emotionally-charged erotic novellas, four women explore their limits, marked by love, lust, and loss.
Life for Claire Pelletier is changed forever when she meets a professor who teaches her a most important lesson in “A Season for Everything.” Evelyn Sutton goes in search of a man in “Unlocking the Mystery” and discovers the key to her own heart. With an open mind, Ava Connors attends a party but wonders if reality can ever live up to her hottest fantasies in “Summer Solstice.” In “The Lottery,” Sierra Zhao sacrifices herself to numerous men to help a friend, fully aware of the consequences.
With locations in London, Dublin, Cape Cod, and Bangkok, these four women will seek pleasure to alter their lives and push their boundaries.
“… I can’t begin to tell you how much the first story “A Season for Everything” touched me. It was so poignant and passionate that it stayed with me throughout the entire book … The love between Claire and Stephen was just so real and I felt it in every part of me. I mean, it truly was the best story in my eyes. I read it three times because I just couldn’t let it go. Call me a sap, because this story was wonderful…” ~ Diantha Jones of Masquerade Crew
**
“… I was absolutely blown away by the 50 year romance … in “Unlocking the Mystery” with simply letters. Heck, they didn’t even progress to e-mail as the letters were still on paper in 2010 and 2011. Theirs was truly a deep, committed love to continue with writing these letters, some extremely erotic. Also, the woman who delivers the last letter, Evelyn, even gets a reward of her own…or at least it appears that way. And no, not sex…something even better. ~ L Smith, Top Amazon Reviewer
**
“Though sex and sexuality were themes in the previous two stories, they were not as prevalent as they are in this story (Summer Solstice) which boils to the brim with passion, lust and desire. This story is not for the faint of heart … with its heavier emphasis on Erotica and erotic themes…” ~ Wyatt McIntyre
**
“…’The Lottery’ takes an exotic, slightly dangerous turn as a woman explores her need to experience life outside the constraints of normalcy, opening up opportunities for friendship, understanding and even love…” ~ Beach Bum Books

My Review and a Giveaway of TRIALS OF LIFE by @junying007
I’m honored to be part of Junying’s final day of her Trials of Life blog tour.
Writing one book is not easy. I know, I’m in the middle of re-writes on my first full length novel at the moment.
That’s why I have infinite admiration for Junying Kirk. Trials of Life is the second in her ‘Journey to the West’ trilogy following her brilliant first book, The Same Moon, and concluding with Land of Hope. She has rewritten parts of Trials of Life since it first released, so this is a new and improved version of the book.
Be sure to ENTER the RAFFLECOPTER DRAW at the end of this post to win a copy of Trials of Life!

My review ★★★★★ (Originally posted July 2012)
Trials of Life is the sequel to The Same Moon, which I truly enjoyed, and I’d highly recommend be read prior to this one, as it follows the main character – Pearl, in her quest to the West.
The style of writing is different in this one with shifting POVs. This goes against most of the conventional rules I’ve learned about writing, yet, once I settled into the story, this was not an issue as the plot drew me in.
We learn of Pearl’s education in the West —not all of it is good, and this story centers around a particularly bad part of it. The underlying theme, however, still touches on the immigrant experience for many who move to a new country in search of “a better life.” Pearl learns that although some things are better, the road is not all welcoming.
This is a well-told story of Pearl’s trials in a new world, and how along the way, she anchors herself to her new home with what is really important.

On her continued “Journey to the West”, Pearl Zhang meets Andrew Church and they fall in love. Her determined, professional pursuits land her a plum international development job at a leading UK university. Life is on an upward curve, or so it seems.
Dick Appleton, a troublesome academic from a privileged background, wants a junior assistant other than Pearl, in his quest to discover China and what it has to offer him.
What happens when two powerful personalities and two different cultures meet and clash? Will life teach Pearl another sharp lesson in her adopted country, or will the ancient Chinese belief hold true that everything happens for a reason? Will she bow to her fate or fights for her beliefs?
