"But Eliza," you say, "that would make me repetitive and predictable! How is fiction supposed to be a real art if we all do the same things!"

Human psyche is a funny thing. There are writing fads ("Don't use omniscient!", "Do something exciting on the first paragraph!", "Adverbs? You must be the devil!"), and then there are structural elements and archetypes. We find certain forms pleasing, and we tend to repeat them. As Christopher Booker states in "The Seven Basic Plots", Jaws and Beowulf are essentially the same story, a thousand years and a completely different culture apart.

You need to know the rules, because knowing what other people expect is important. You need to know the rules so that you know why they're rules, how to break them, and when is the right time to do so. And finally, you should learn the rules of basic elements because you're probably using them already, and identifying these things in your own work will give you freedom from their common incarnations.(less)

My co-writer and I are finishing up edits on book 2 of The Forever Series (titled Marlan Ice), and writing our first draft of book 3 of the same. We hope to release books in that series often.

On my own, I had a longer steampunk novel that may or may not be YA that I'm getting back into revisions. Probably the best thing I've ever written, but dang it's complicated. The title is "The Artificer's Angels", and it's about illegal resurrection.(less)
