After spending a lifetime gorging on science fiction and the bizarrely fantastic, Todd Thorne sold his first short story in 2007. This triggered an epiphany: Todd's realization that he enjoyed creating and sharing as much as he did consuming. Other short stories followed suit. If you like your SF dark and gritty, you can still find many of them online via Todd's website or pick up his Dark Doses anthology.

After spending another lifetime toiling in IT, Todd yanked the ripcord so he could devote more energy to writing. Currently he resides in East Texas with his wife, trying to keep cool, dodge hurricanes, and swat away pesky mosquitoes while he churns out novel length works. Todd's first novel, Maelstrom Rising, was released in December 2020

I thought I would ask and answer this question because yes, a great example just happened and it struck a chord with me.

In the past week a news article broke about a meteorologist issuing a tornado warning for a portion of Maryland. This occurred while he was live on air giving the latest updates on severe weather rampaging through the Washington D.C. area. In mid-report, he realized that his home and family were in imminent danger, so he paused to call and warn them to take cover. Immediately. Fortunately, all turned out well for them.

Not true though in my book, Maelstrom Rising.

Without giving away too much, I too had a meteorologist in the same situation. As Theresa Rollins was about to go on the air to issue an urgent tornado warning, she agonized over calling her daughter Daphne’s school and warning them of the danger. The outcome of that moment forever altered Theresa’s life and fate and ultimately set into motion the events of Maelstrom Rising.

It’s not often I deeply reflect upon consequences we may face when we make a split-second choice between doing what we’re supposed to versus doing what we know to be right. But there’s no escaping that calculus. It’s always there, happening in the background, often impacting our lives in ways we’d never guess.

Though writers can’t resist making attempts at speculating.(less)

I get to take something already astoundingly cool—an idea, development, technology, theory, whatever—and mess with it just to see where it leads to, good, bad, or otherwise.

Admittedly I tend to gravitate toward writing about how things go horribly wrong as a consequence. This reflects my overall Sci-Fi reading preference too. What can I say? Make a fantastic techno-extreme fantastically bad for some protagonist then cheer on their relentlessly opposed attempts to persevere and overcome. Sign me up.

A funny thing though. Quite often when you get to determine where the negative impacts and effects apply to a contrived situation, you’ll also discover where some positive outcomes appear. Even if it’s only for a select … say, privileged in some way … group (which is yet another take on overall detrimental effects, typically appearing in dystopian tales). It’s that point of intersection where good-enabling slams up against bad-causing … that’s where Sci-Fi stories can especially shine on how the collision gets uniquely handled. I find it to be a most excellent, enticing spot to do my "messing around."(less)

“Writing is magic, as much the water of life as any other creative art. The water is free. So drink. Drink and be filled up.”

“Yet, if there is the possibility of this satisfaction from accurate prophecy in science fiction, there is also the reverse. Science fiction offers its writers chances of embarrassment that no other form of fiction does. After all, if we may prove accurate in our predictions, we may prove inaccurate as well, sometimes ludicrously so.”
