Author Bio:
Award winning and USA Today Bestselling author, Jessica Cage was born and raised in Chicago, IL. Writing has always been a passion for her. She dabbles in artistic creations of all sorts but at the end of the day, it's the pen that her hand itches to hold. Jessica had never considered following her dream to be a writer because she was told far too often "There is no money in writing." So she chose the path most often traveled. During pregnancy, she asked herself an important question. How would she be able to inspire her unborn son to follow his dreams and reach for the stars, if she never had the guts to do it herself? Jessica decided to take a risk and unleash the plethora of characters and their crazy adventurous worlds that had previously existed only in her mind, into the realm of readers. She did this with hopes to inspire not only her son but herself. Inviting the world to tag along on her journey to become the writer she has always wanted to be. She hopes to continue writing and bringing her signature Caged Fantasies to readers everywhere.

Excerpt:
Wind lifted her hair, separating thick tresses into wild strands that reached out into the air behind her as the chill of an approaching winter caressed her skin. She pulled the leather jacket tighter around her full figure as the beacon just a few miles away from her location pulsed. It was a continued demand for her presence. The closer her proximity, the stronger it became, though increasing the distance wouldn’t have allowed her to outrun it. Patience was a virtue, but it was one that the eternal pain in her ass didn’t have in his possession. Not that it mattered when she considered that time was quickly running out—soon enough, the full strength behind the magical chokehold would return and drag her right back to the last place she wanted to be. Still, risking the pain of the resurgence of his power over her, she stood atop the hill, looking down on Reverie, a city filled with vampires, and other underbelly types who could find no safe place in the rest of the world. This unsettling place was her home now, whether she liked it or not. Her heart ached as she considered what returning to him really meant for her.
There was a tightness in her chest, a sorrow that was only echoed by her hatred of the place she watched. Because of her connection to Reverie, she had to walk away from the love of her life, Jinn. She’d only just gotten him back, and for the blip of time that the universe allowed for them to be in each other’s arms, she was happier than she could ever remember being. Eyes closed, she erased the view in front of her as she called to memory the sight of his face above her own. The concern and love that marked his expression as he looked down on her both warmed her heart and caused it to ache more. In all of the time they’d spent apart, there wasn’t much that had changed about him. Yeah, he had a different hairstyle, but the face she was met with was the one that had always belonged to her. If she could have she would have stayed with him, wrapped in the infinite embrace that was his love. That wasn’t a possibility because from the moment she opened her eyes, her new captor was alerted. It was barely a breath of a moment before she was called to return to his side.
The hardest thing she ever had to do was tell Jinn that she couldn’t stay with him. Especially after all that he’d just gone through to save her from Daegal, a warlock who’d made a deal with the devil and exchanged his soul for the magic he’d used to turn two former witches into immortal djinns. Daegal robbed Jinn and Nitara of their lives together countless times before, and it seemed even in his death, he’d succeeded in doing it yet again. Wrapped in his sheets, she laid there, silent, and listened to the steady sound of his heartbeat, the calming rhythm of his breath, and before her eyes opened, she came to terms with the knowledge that she would have to break his heart. Jinn loved her like no one else had before, and like no one else ever would. Even after centuries had passed he still cared enough for her to face the depths of hell and bring her back from its fiery clutches.
The only way she could think to keep Jinn from following her was to tell him that she was leaving by her own choice. Any other explanation and he would have tried to come after her. Without a doubt, she knew that he would have made another attempt at a rescue mission. She would have loved him for it, but there was a difference this time around. He couldn’t save her, regardless of his efforts—he would fail, and it would crush him a thousand times over. She couldn’t allow that. It was Nitara’s turn to be the protector, and by breaking his heart, in the most twisted way possible, it meant saving his life. This wasn’t something she could ever be saved from. Thanks to the bastard who made her what she was, she was stuck, and her new master was pulling her strings. She sighed as the cool air brushed against her skin, setting in a chill that seemed to bring emphasis to the feeling of walking away from not only her love, but her freedom. Picture

Chris Eboch (AKA @KRIS_BOCK)  on Writing #Kidlit and #Mystery & #Suspense for All Ages

[image error] Welcome, Chris! I'm trilled you could visit today.  I know you'd like to discuss writing #Kidlit and #Mystery & #Suspense so let's jump right in.

Tell us about your writing journey. How did you get your first book published?
I had spent a summer traveling in Mexico and Central America with a friend. That inspired The Well of Sacrifice, a novel set in ninth century Mayan Guatemala. I’d always loved middle grade fiction and had continued reading it into adulthood. It seemed like a fun place to explore, and shorter than writing an adult novel. It turns out my style, which tends to be fast-paced and tight because of my journalism training, works well for children's literature.

You've also written some mysteries for young people. Tell us about them.

The Eyes of Pharaoh is an action-packed mystery set in ancient Egypt. When Reya hints that Egypt is in danger from foreign nomads, Seshta and Horus don’t take him seriously. How could anyone challenge Egypt? Then Reya disappears. To save their friend, Seshta and Horus spy on merchants, soldiers, and royalty, and start to suspect even The Eyes of Pharaoh, the powerful head of the secret police. The main character, Seshta, is a young temple dancer, so she's not exactly your typical detective.

In Bandits Peak, a teenage boy meets strangers hiding on the mountains and gets drawn into their crimes. But when he discovers their true purpose, will he risk his life to expose them? Fans of Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet will love Bandits Peak. This was inspired by a true story from the 1950s. A boy found criminals hiding in the mountains, including a woman, and he chose not to tell anyone about them.

School Library Journal said of your Haunted series, “Haunted is a fun read with some thrills and chills and has the added bonus of some genuine, compassionate personalities.” One character, Tania, interacts with the ghosts in your book. Is it hard to write for an invisible character?

I initially envisioned older brother Jon telling the story, even though he can’t see ghosts. Then I debated whether Tania should really be the main character/narrator, since she can see the ghosts and she drives much of the action. But I like the complications that arise for Jon because he can’t see what’s happening. Plus Tania isn’t always good at describing the situation, which can add humor.

I also think the conflict becomes more realistic this way. Tania’s goal is to help the ghosts deal with whatever is keeping them in this world, so they can move on. Most kids won’t face anything like that. Jon has to figure out when and how to believe things he can’t see. He has loyalty to his sister and helps keep her secrets. But he also has a responsibility to keep her safe. He has to figure out his role in all of this, in life. So I think kids will identify with him more.
[image error] It sound like you write a little bit of everything.

You have that right!  I've written a fantasy for young people as well. The Genie’s Gift is a lighthearted action novel set in the fifteenth-century Middle East, drawing on the mythology of The Arabian Nights. I wanted to write a character who was shy. So many children's books seem to have outgoing, tomboy girl characters. But I wasn't like that growing up, and I wanted a character more like the child I was.

Thirteen-year-old Anise dreads marrying the man her father chooses for her. Her aunt tells her about the Genie Shakayak, the giver of the Gift of Sweet Speech. Those few who cross the vast desert and defeat the guardians of the mountain receive their reward. From that day forward, no one can deny them anything they ask.

Anise is determined to find the genie and ask for the gift, so she can control her own future. But the way is barred by a series of challenges, both ordinary and magical. How will Anise get past a vicious she-ghoul, a sorceress who turns people to stone, and mysterious sea monsters, when she can’t even speak in front of strangers?

I also have two books on the craft of writing. Advanced Plotting is designed for the intermediate writer who still struggles with plotting. You Can Write for Children: How to Write Great Stories, Articles, and Books for Kids and Teenagers is pretty self-explanatory. Check out my writing tips at my Write Like a Pro! blog.

Finally, I write for adults under the name Kris Bock. These novels of suspense and romance feature outdoor adventures and Southwestern landscapes. The Mad Monk’s Treasure follows the hunt for a long-lost treasure in the New Mexico desert. What We Found is a mystery with romantic elements about a young woman who finds a murder victim in the woods. Whispers in the Dark involves intrigue among ancient Southwest ruins. Lazy Days of Summer #Giveaway Blog Hop (runs Aug. 15-30, 2018)

Picture   Who doesn’t love summer? Warm days spent at the beach or by the pool. Picnics in the park. A cool breeze that blows through your hair as you gaze over a picturesque lake. And let’s not forget about all those delicious summer treats--ice cream, fudgesicles, and berry pie.
Reading is one of my favorite summer pastimes. Well, to be honest, reading is a favorite pastime no matter what the season. A good paranormal romance novel is my go-to book of choice, because I love all things paranormal.
Speaking of paranormal romance, I happen to be a fantasy and paranormal romance writer who just released a new story. It’s called Alpha Pair. Let me share a little about the story.

[image error]      How strong is the blood that binds?
Tatiana Bolovich is a beautiful femme fatale with a haunting history. Having recently discovered the brutish Demetri Romanoff is her heartmate, she spent the past year avoiding him, but the Fates have other plans.
Demetri commands every situation. A strong, valiant warrior he’s used to being in control, that is until he is kidnapped by demons. Forced to endure unspeakable experiments at the hands of his enemy, the Alpha discovers just how out of control life can get.
Summoned by the Alpha Council, Tatiana grudgingly helps track Demetri down, promising herself that she will disappear from his life forever once the job is done. But matters of the heart are not so easily ignored. Will she give him a chance to prove himself, or will she deny her nature and slip away into the night? Picture    Are you a paranormal romance lover like me? Know anyone who loves vampires or demons? If so, the Alpha Council Chronicles series might just be the perfect summer read.
The heroes of my paranormal stories are powerfully built warriors, whose duty is second only to their love for their mates.  Each story focuses on a seductive, commanding male and his one true love, following their struggle to find one another and develop their relationship, while evil ones are hot on their heels bringing death and destruction.
Each book in my Alpha Council Chronicle series can be read as a stand-alone novel and my latest story, Alpha Pair, is available at all eBook retailers in both print and ebook format. Click here for buy links: Brenda's Books
So kick back. Relax. And enjoy some good books this summer.
                                              Happy Reading!

Excerpt
Nana pushed Angela gently aside and looked at her face. “Wait a minute. Don’t think you can send me off the scent. When I said you weren’t here, you didn’t have the face of a frightened person. You were dreaming with open eyes.”
Heat rose in Angela’s cheeks. She covered her face with her hands and inhaled deeply.
“My child, I think I’ve guessed what’s troubling you, but I want you to open your heart and tell me the truth.”
Angela shrugged and replied quickly over her choking, hammering heart, without looking at her nanny, “I’m in love, Nana.”
“I guessed right. Then why all the words about dying and despair? Being in love is a reason for happiness and sweet dreams, not for tears and such a long face as yours. Who’s the boy?”
Angela stood up and arranged the folds of her dark red velvet dress. She went to the table and poured a glass of water. She drank slowly, put the glass down and with her back to Nana she said, “Nana, you must promise not to breathe a word to Mama or Papa.”
“My mouth’s sealed, you know me,” Nana said. “There must be a problem if you ask it of me.”
With her back to her old nanny, Angela replied softly, “The one who stole my heart is Vlad, the prince.”
She turned and saw Nana staring at her, open mouthed and wide-eyed. Nana’s hand covered her mouth. The woman looked towards the door. She stood still for several seconds as if pondering Angela’s words, and then nodded slowly. “Dear me. Take care. If Safta hears you, she will lock you in the house or send you away. You know she can’t stand the prince.”
Angela nodded. “Yes, I know.”
“I imagine you’re aware what this means. For you. It will have to remain a dream. He’s another woman’s man.”
“I know, I know. I have thought it all through a hundred times.” Angela lightly brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead. Lots of images of Vlad, his smile for her, his touch on her face, brought tears again to her eyes. “When I saw him, my heart started beating wildly and a pleasant heat enveloped me. If he’d made the tiniest sign, I’d have followed him to the end of the world.” Angela’s gaze turned to the window as if Vlad was peering at her through it. “A dream you say. Yes, it’s a dream and the hope that he could feel the same for me.” She muffled a sob.
“Hope? Hope you say? It’s just a word to prevent you from seeing the reality. . . . Your mother sees the devil in him. She keeps calling him names, especially the vampire. I’ve heard her many times.”

Author Bio
Carmen Stefanescu resides in Romania, the native country of the infamous vampire Count Dracula  where, for about 50 years of communist dictatorship, just speaking about God, faith, reincarnation or paranormal phenomena could have led someone to great trouble - the psychiatric hospital if not to prison.
High-school teacher of English and German in her native country, and mother of two daughters, Carmen Stefanescu survived the grim years of oppression  by escaping in a parallel world, that of the books. Reading was, is and will always be her greatest hobby.
She has dreamed since childhood to become a writer, but many of the things she wrote remained just drawer projects. The fall of the Ceausescu’s regime in 1989, and the opening of the country to the world meant a new beginning for her. She started publishing. Poems first, and then prose. Both in English.
Several of her poems were successfully published in a collection of Contemporary English Poems, Muse Whispers vol.1 and Muse Whispers vol.2 by Midnight Edition Publication, in 2001 and 2002.
She likes to blend genres and thus she writes paranormal stories with a smidgen of mystery, history and romance. The reader will find suspense, dark themes, adventure, danger as well as sweet revenge. She calls her stories  “gothic” romance. Her writing focuses on rebirth, past life regression, karmic retribution.
Her first novel, Shadows of the Past, was released, at first,  in 2012 by Wild Child Publishing, USA, then after the publisher closed its doors republished by Solstice Publishing in 2017, folowed by Till Life Do Us Part released by Solstice Publishing, USA.
Her latest novels are Dracula’s Mistress and Dracula’s Prodigy, published by Wolfpack Publishing, USA.
Carmen joined the volunteer staff at Marketing For Romance Writers Author blog and is the coordinator of #Thursday13 posts.

The Summoning- A Mystical #SummerRead from Linda Nightingale (@LNightingale)

The Summoning
by
Linda Nightingale

The Migration of a Tribe into Fantasy Romance

The Arawaks are indigenous peoples of South America and the Caribbean. At various times, the term Arawak has been used for the Lokono of South America and the Taino of the Caribbean, all of whom spoke related Arawakan languages.
In the Summoning, protected and guided by Eyrael, the God of Wind and Sea, the Arawak tribe treks from South America to Jamaica,. This amazing feat actually occurred 2,500 years ago, and the Arawaks are credited with being the initial inhabitants, naming Jamaica ‘the land of wood and water’ – Xaymaca.
Michael Heckenberger, an anthropologist at the University of Florida who helped found the Central Amazon Project, and his team found elaborate pottery, ringed villages, raised fields, large mounds, and evidence for regional trade networks that are all indicators of a complex culture. There is also evidence that they modified the soil using various techniques such as deliberate burning of vegetation to transform it into black earth, which even today is famed for its agricultural productivity.
They grew cassava, sweet potatoes, maize (corn), fruits, vegetables, cotton and tobacco. Tobacco was grown on a large scale as smoking was their most popular pastime. They built their villages all over the island but most of them settled on the coasts and near rivers as they fished to get food. Fish was also a major part of their diet.
By nature, the Arawaks were a mild and simple people. Physically, they were light brown in color, short and well-shaped with coarse, black hair. Their faces were broad and their noses flat.
The Arawaks led quiet and peaceful lives until they were destroyed by the Spaniards some years after Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1494.
In The Summoning, Heather’s deceased husband Jahill is from an obscure branch of the Arawaks still living in Jamaica. Eyrael is the spirit god of the tribe. This connection among the hero, heroine to the Arawaks is what throws them into danger.
[image error] Blurb:
Heather Morique is a witch. The problem is she doesn’t know it. Her husband Jahill was a refugee from an obscure branch of the Arawak Indians. After his death, mysterious whispers lure her to his homeland of Jamaica. Soon, she finds herself in a web of secrets, lies and illusions.
Jahill’s people worship Eyrael, the God of Wind and Sea, and his brother Sofiel, the God of Fire and Earth. The new Shaman has pitted brother against brother, and these two powerful spirits from an alternate universe fight to become the tribe’s ruling deity. Will light or darkness reign?
When Heather unwittingly summons Eyrael, these two unlikely soul mates face a dangerous fate.  The chemistry between them is more disturbing than the long-buried secrets.
Excerpt:

Wet hair flailed her eyes. Unblinkingly, she stared into the wind she battled every step. Finally, she ducked her head against the gale. Around her ankles, the sea foamed. The drums beat louder, their wild rhythm echoing in her veins. Sweet and strong as Jamaican rum, the growing storm flagged the homespun robe behind her. She fingered the rough material, not remembering when or where she’d put on the long brown garment.
Deeper, Heather. The pain will soon be over. The Whisperers’ exotic voices urged her to plunge deeper and sink beneath the waves. Death was the only way to silence the agony devouring her alive—and to banish the insistent whispers from her mind. If she surrendered to the sea, she’d Ariel, her infant son who’d lived only a month.
Remember Jahill. You’ve shed no tears for your husband? They accused in her mind, never aloud. As always, she’d no answer to offer them. She had wept for Jahill until she learned he was not alone in the car crash. A quiet despondency gripped her, her empty stomach cramping as it had since the Georgia highway patrol brought her news of the accident.  How many times had that scene played in her memory? A fresh-faced young man telling her Jahill and Ariel were dead. He’d held her up when her knees buckled. If he hadn’t, she’d have fallen, sobbing at his feet.
Heart thudding dully, Heather studied the demarcation line between heaven and earth, seeking a reason to go on living, but any sense of self had long ago vanished in the Whisperers’ seductive promises. Two weeks after her husband’s death, they took possession of her life.
The old despair rose within her. She threw back her head, screaming her pain to the uncaring universe. The silent cry burned her parched throat. On the beach behind her, the chants throbbed—men’s voices thundering with the sea; women’s voices keening with the wind. Above her, pinpoint stars, diamond-bright, pierced the black sky. At night, the blue topaz Caribbean was Coke-bottle green.
The sea threw its arms around her shoulders, its embrace warm and inviting. The wind kissed her feverish face. As if a star had fallen, one of her diamond earrings—a Christmas gift from her husband—splashed into the darker water.

Excerpt

Jen looked into the face of the man she’d adored since she was nine, and actively avoided for the last twenty years. Lance looked almost the same as the day they’d parted. A few more lines framed his hazel eyes, now sea-dark with concern. His brown hair showed no trace of gray. It was still too long, with the same stupid lock falling over his forehead. She automatically reached to brush it back. Stopped herself. Her throat was so dry. Where was a cough drop when you needed one? “You’ve aged well.” Jen’s knees buckled.
Lance kicked out a chair and sat, pulling her into his lap. “It’s okay. Whatever it is, we can fix it.”
His warm, strong hands sent shock waves shivering through her body. She shook her head mutely.
Lance’s voice sharpened. “Is it Jeremy? Kathryn? Has something happened to them?”
“Uncle Lance!” Kathryn stopped in the living room archway, eyes child-solemn. “Why are you hugging Aunty Jen?”
Jen slipped out of Lance’s arms and landed on the floor. Could this get any worse?
“Aunty Jen says you are a stupid head with a big brain and no feelings.”
Jen rose with all the dignity she could muster. “You shouldn’t repeat things grownups say, Kitty-Kat. It’s not polite.” She reached for the packet Mrs. Flannery left behind, willing her hands not to tremble. “Here are the papers, you came for. Nice to see you. Goodbye.”
Lance glanced from Kathryn to Jen. “Where’s Jeremy? I know he and Kitty-Kat went to Sussex. Why is she back without him, and what are you doing here?”
“We couldn’t get home, Uncle Lance. So we came here.” Kathryn scuffed her foot, now shod in a plastic Jelly shoe, against the wood floor. “I thought Jen would like the machine, but I don’t like being young again. My brain is too small. I want to go home.”
Lance’s hand tightened on the papers he held. “Kathryn,” he said carefully. “How old are you?”
“I’m nineteen and I want to go home.”
Lance catapulted out of the chair. “It worked. By all that’s good and beautiful, it worked. I didn’t think he could do it.”
“You knew? You knew what he was working on?”
Lance’s grin changed to the expressionless mask she used to hate so much. “Of course, I knew. I divorced you. Not your brother. I was helping him with the theory. He probably would have told you about it, had you been interested in anyone but yourself and your career.”
Jen resisted the urge to punch him. One of them reverting to childhood was enough. Too bad. Her boxing trainer said she had a fantastic right hook. She kept her tone smooth and even. “I don’t know when we are, but I turned forty-nine yesterday, Lancelot, and you don’t know half as much about me as you think you do. I am very interested in my niece, and she’s standing there listening to every word we say.”
Lance turned to Kathryn. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. Your aunty and I won’t fight anymore.” He crooked his little finger at Jen the way they used to do when they were children. “Pax?”
Resisting the temptation to break it, Jen hooked her little finger in his. “Pax,”
Kathryn curved her little finger around theirs. “Pax. Now can we get ice cream?”

Reviews:
InD’tale Audiobook Review. http://www.indtale.com/reviews/audiobooks/maybe-time-second-chance-romanceSusan B. James deftly weaves a tale of romance, time travel and history. What makes this story stand out is that James does not take us back to 1988 for a do over. Jen and Lance they are both in their fifties when they journey forward to 2005 to repair time. The combination of a love that has never died and a historical back drop from the not too distant past will capture listeners' attention and make them hope that maybe this time, Lance and Jen will get it right.
Narrated by Stephanie Bentley, the audio is a high quality, professional production. The contrast of British accents for the main character with an American accent for the narrator is surprising, but did not detract from the story. Overall, Bentley does a marvelous job of bringing the characters to life with distinct voices and taking us on a journey through time.
5.0 out of 5 stars Romance, time travel, women of substance...

Maybe This Time

Two things about this book that are delicious: the idea of having a second chance with the love of your life AND the fact that the main character gets that chance in middle age.
If you like romance stories but wish they weren’t all about young adults or 30-somethings, this is the book for you. Ms. James does an excellent job of presenting the scrumptious possibility that maybe, just maybe we don’t have to live with the mistakes we made the first time around.
Read it for the time travel, the spot-on era descriptions that take you back to a simpler age, and most of all for the romance.
A page-turner for all those—and more reasons. [image error] Author Bio:
Susan writes second chance romances with a touch of magic as Susan B. James and children’s books as Susan J. Berger. She writes older heroines because she is chronologically gifted and enjoys creating characters who remember that change is only on the outside. Inside our older shells is a much younger psyche.
In her debut romance,  Time and Forever , two women in their sixties inadvertently travel back to London in 1969.  Maybe This Time  is the companion book.
Susan’s other career is acting. In 2016, among other things, she killed Kathy Bates on American Horror Story- Roanoke. In 2017, among other things, she got stabbed by a pen on Future Man and played the victim on Major Crimes. Karma? Her 2018 began with a role on Lucifer. More to come.

Margo Simmons gripped the edges of the leather chair. Devastated after receiving a letter about her Uncle Harry’s death, she didn’t know what to expect from Mr. Steinberg. Her only other encounter with lawyers had been during the reading of her father’s will. Though she was only five at the time, she remembered her mother’s anguish over losing her husband and being a single parent.
An older gentleman clothed in pinstripes walked into the office as she reflected on the past.
“I’m sorry your mother couldn’t be here for the reading,” the family lawyer said. “You’ve grown into a lovely young woman.”
Margo blinked back tears at memories of good times shared with Uncle Harry. “Not so young. I’m twenty-three.”
The portly man squeezed himself into a swivel chair and peered at her over wire-rimmed bifocals.
Margo gripped her knees to steady her nerves. “They’re downsizing at her dress shop. She was afraid to leave early. My stepfather is furious because Uncle Harry didn’t leave him any money.”
Mr. Steinberg nodded in sympathy at the pained expression on the young woman’s face. “It saddens me to hear Jerry hasn’t changed. However, since you’re the only one present to hear your uncle’s will, I’ll get to the point. Harry has left you his Riverside Drive condominium and the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
Margo jumped up from the chair and hugged the man. “This is a miracle. I can’t wait to tell my Mom. She’s wanted me to get out on my own. Now I can.”
The attorney pushed bifocals up his fleshy nose. “In today’s market, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars won’t last long unless invested wisely.”
The only thing Margo knew about investments was she didn’t have enough money to make any.
“Mr. Steinberg, do you know of someone who can advise me so I make wise investments?”
He raised his hand. “Not so fast my dear. Your Uncle stipulated that you be gainfully employed for a year before you can claim your inheritance. The last time your mother and I spoke, you were studying to be a French teacher.”
Margo stared at the vibrant red dragon design on an Oriental rug and thought of the threadbare one under her rickety dining room table. Her eyes darted from his monogrammed attaché case to her worn shoulder strap bag. She had to find a way to tell him of her predicament.
“I’ve been looking for a teaching job for two years, but I am on the substitute list and have a part-time job at a dry cleaner so I’m employed. I know it’s not a professional job, but it’s respectable work. ”
Mr. Steinberg made notes in her uncle’s folder. “I’m afraid that won’t do, my dear. Harry loved you but was very clear on the type of employment.”
A tear rolled down Margo’s cheek. “I don’t know how much longer I can live at home. Mama is working twice as hard since Jerry was laid off from his job at the newspaper. He couldn’t get the hang of technology. He’s been on disability from an old back injury. Could I at least speak to an investment counsellor to get an idea of what to do with my inheritance? It would give me something to dream about.”
Margo sat on her hands as she waited with trepidation for the lawyer’s response. Since childhood, all she ever wanted was to be part of a happy family and not have to worry about money. Instead of granting her wishes, life had brought her a mean stepfather. Jerry fractured a childhood that had been filled with love when her birth father was alive.
