“Renew” Feature Now Available for eBooks & eAudiobooks

Good news for users of KDL’s eBook site — OverDrive has added a new Renew feature for eBooks & eAudiobooks!

The option to renew an eBook or eAudiobook becomes available 3 days before the title is set to expire, appearing next to the title in the Bookshelf section of your account on the ebooks.kdl.org site. If there are no existing holds on the title (indicated by a green Renew icon), you can borrow the eBook again immediately once your first checkout expires. If there are already holds on the title (indicated by a grayed-out Renew icon), the Renew feature will place you back on the hold list and you can borrow it again as soon as your turn comes.

You may only use the Renew feature once for each checkout. Once you have renewed a title, its Renew icon will have a checkmark next to it. You can track which titles you’ve renewed from the Holds section of your account on ebooks.kdl.org. Once your renewed title becomes available, you will receive an email notification and you must check it out and download it again.

Please see OverDrive’s Help page for a complete explanation of this new feature. If you have any questions, please call us at 616-784-2007 or fill out our Support Request Form.

Early Lit Bits: Learning with Crafts — Wearable Nature Collections

Wearable Nature CollectionsPlay-Grow-Read

Fall is an excellent time to take a nature walk. Instead of bringing a basket or bag in which to collect natural objects, make a simple tape bracelet.

Materials:

Wide, sticky tape such as duct tape

Found objects such as leaves, seed pods, pine needles and small stones

To Make:

After dressing for the outdoors, make a bracelet by wrapping tape loosely around a child’s wrist with the sticky side facing out. Take a walk outside and look for items to stick onto the bracelet. Talk about all the interesting things found during the walk. Talking with adults helps children develop vocabulary and language skills that will help them learn to read when they begin school.

Other Ideas:

Make a scrapbook of found objects and label the items. Make a window hanging by taping a piece of clear contact paper to a window with the sticky side facing out. Stick found objects from outdoor walks to the contact paper.

Author Tom Clancy Dies at Age 66

1380734311000-AP-Obit-Tom-Clancy

Author Tom Clancy died unexpectedly on Tuesday at the age of 66.  He was born in 1947 and read naval history instead of the standard children’s literature.  He attempted to join the Army R.O.T.C. but was told he was nearsighted.  The accuracy of his descriptions of submarines and weaponry came from his readings of technical manuals and interviews with experts.

Tom Clancy published his first book, The Hunt of Red October, in 1984.  This book was the first work of fiction published through the Naval Institute Press in Annapolis. Clancy approached them after being rejected by major publishers.  The paperback book was picked up by Berkley Publishing.  He went on to publish many other books featuring , with the final one, Command Authority, to be published December 3.  A number of Clancy books became blockbuster movies, including The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.

From the Director: The Affordable Care Act

Lance WernerThe expertise of libraries hinges on our ability to help you find resources that entertain, educate and inform.

The latest example at KDL: we’re midway into The Affordable Care Act and You, free informational programs presented by Priority Health, at several of our branches. If you’re wondering whether you qualify for the Healthcare Marketplace, how it may affect your family or when to apply, the aim is to provide straightforward information about the new law.

Our partnership with Priority Health on this effort is just weeks old and already has become a model for other libraries. At the Michigan Library Association’s annual meeting later this month, librarians from around the state will learn, based on what KDL is doing right now, how they can better position themselves to help their patrons find answers. It’s what we do, and what we are passionate about.
