News

Hello all,

With mixed feelings, I must announce that Curiosity Quills Press and I have parted company. As of a few weeks ago, all of my books with them are out of print, apart from audiobooks, which continue to be available through Audible and Tantor. The separation was on good terms, as these things go, and CQ has granted me license to use the covers they created as I move forward to self publish. My intent is to reissue all my books sometime this year, as well as release the final, as yet unpublished book in the Mayhem Wave series.

Please watch this space for announcements regarding this and future projects!

Transitions

This week, I bid a fond farewell to the original edition of Static Mayhem. This was my first novel, and though I have come a very long way since I first set foot in that post-apocalyptic, urban fantasy mashup of a world, this is the story that has stayed with me the longest, and these are the characters who are nearest to my heart.

But, as I said, I have come a long way. And with a new publisher has come a new opportunity to revisit this tale and this world. As proud as I am of this book, there were aspects of it that didn't quite hold together the way I wanted them to. Chief among these was Harrison’s journey to Chicago, which always felt like its own novel (which, indeed, originally, it was), rushed and sold short to cram it into the larger story.

Well, now it is its own novel.

This November, Prelude to Mayhem will be released from Curiosity Quills Press, and tell the story of that journey in greatly expanded form, with (I hope) a lot more polish than my rookie draft. In addition to Harrison’s road trip, the book will also include the backstory of Dorothy O’Neill, hinted at in the original novel, but never explored. That character has a significant role to play later in the series, and I wanted her to have a stronger foundation than the smattering of appearances she had in the original book.

The following July, Static Mayhem itself (minus the parts that became Prelude to Mayhem) will be re-released in a new edition, also from Curiosity Quills. The story is essentially the same, with some added touches and details, and some relationships developed to a bit more depth. As proud as I was of the original, this is the version that best captures what that story was meant to be.

In December of 2017, Mayhem’s Children, the sequel to Static Mayhem, will finally see print. I am told that asking an author which of their books is their favorite is like asking a parent about having a favorite child. Maybe that’s true for other writers, but I will say flat out right here, of all my novels, Mayhem’s Children is the one I hope to be remembered for. It’s almost two years out, and I don’t want to spoil it, but please watch for it.

Finally, Mayhem’s Reign, the fourth book in the series, is tentatively penciled in for a May, 2018 release. This is easily the most complex novel I have ever attempted (and not to put too fine a point on this, but Unahppenings wasn’t exactly simplistic). At the time of this writing, I am less than a quarter of the way into the first draft. More news on that as it develops, much of which will probably take the form of how exhausted I am from tackling it.

So, this is where the story of Static Mayhem 1.0 draws to a close. It has been a great five years, and I have enjoyed watching the book build a following. I also think it’s safe to say if Static Mayhem had never been published, I might not have found the encouragement to write Unhappenings, or any of the other books I have since taken on. My thanks go out to everyone who bought or read the book, even the handful of you who hated it, and also to WorldMaker Media for having faith enough in my work to give it a platform.

As of today, the Kindle version of Static Mayhem is no longer available. If you hurry, you might still be able to snap up a print copy, soon to be a rare collector’s item.

Hope to see you all again in November as we start this ride back up with a vengeance!

[UPDATE: Mayhem’s Reign, which was to have been the fourth book in the series, is now book 5. I realized there was another story to tell between that book and Mayhem’s Children, and my attempt to tell it as a short story grew to a short novel. Book 4, Balance of Mayhem, now claims that May 2018 release date. Mayhem’s Reign is still on track, due November of that year.]
