I'm a novelist, biographer, historian, scribbler, and dabbler. I've helped to make commercials on chocolate chip cookies. I've also taught history to college students and led dazed kids on London theatre trips. Somehow my first novel MRS QUEEN became a national bestseller. It has been optioned by The Weinstein Company for a movie. A second novel PRINCE HARRY BOY TO MAN has just been published. It will be officially launched at the Boston Athenaeum in September. I've also written non-fiction on Jackie Kennedy Onassis as a lifelong lover of books in READING JACKIE. My biography of a funny couple who lived with Queen Victoria, HENRY & MARY PONSONBY, was a BBC Radio 4 book of the week. I've played with the question of Benjamin Disraeli's sexuality in THE P ...more

That encourages me. I'm currently working on two novels that are a bit different from Mrs Queen. One is tentatively called Lord Byron in Bed. The other is about Tennessee Williams, Lillian Hellman and a fictional character I'll call "me." If you liked Mrs Queen, you might also like one of my non-fictions about two people who served Queen Victoria, Henry & Mary Ponsonby. Usually you can get a paperback or even a hardback of that on Amazon pretty cheaply. Or maybe the library would order it for you? Bill(less)

The Jackie Interviews

While I was writing READING JACKIE, I wrote memos of the people I talked to who knew her or worked with her. Reading Jackie: Her Autobiography in Books

I've got about 75 of them.

I've started publishing these memoranda over at my website. The Jackie Interviews

They shed a little new light on her, and on some of the odd, intelligent and provocative people in her orbit.

“Whatever she wore The Queen regarded as not unlike a uniform. She put on pearl earrings in the same spirit that a policeman did up his silver buttons. They were part of the job.”
William Kuhn, Mrs Queen Takes the Train

“She paid for the coffee, took a used newspaper out of the bin, and sat in a comfortable leather armchair. She was shocked to see that people didn't move on after twenty minutes. Apparently, the price of one cup of coffee brought you the rental of an armchair and a free newspaper for as long as you liked, the whole morning if you wished.”
