I think it was Aaron Sorkin who said something to the effect of, "A lot of people don't understand that most of your best writing takes place while you're lying on the couch watching TV." I'm always writing, creating, developing a story, whether it's on the page or in my imagination. Giving yourself space and time away from the page or the screen actually saves you from that burnout or fatigue. But, there are times when I'm just not in the mood to sit down and type. When that happens, I give myself two days max to do whatever else I want, then it's time to get back to work. If I'm still not in the mood, I'll go back to the beginning of the chapter or the start of the book and read it. That will usually help me find a problem in the story that keeps me from moving forward or will help me fall back in love with the story and the inspiration will flow.(less)

But, that's also the best thing. You have a drive, a passion, a connection to the world and people you create, and then a connection with the people kind enough to read your work. It's wonderful.(less)

I’m Doing a Thing

I’ve been learning a lot about myself during this pandemic. One discovery is that optimism is required fuel for my creativity. Not that I am a Pollyanna or one of those “good vibes only” folks. (Please. I survive on snark.) But there’s something about being able to trust in one’s future. That trust let’s you relax and, in that relaxed space, creativity is freed. Of course, I know that nothing is g
