Kate Hilton is the author of THE HOLE IN THE MIDDLE and JUST LIKE FAMILY.

Before turning to fiction, Kate worked in law, higher education, public relations and major gift fundraising. She has an English degree from McGill University and a Law degree from the University of Toronto. She has had difficulty deciding on a career.

She lives in Toronto with her two sons, who shall remain nameless, and with Shelby, a rescue dog who displays corgi-like tendencies. When not napping, Shelby assists with plot development.

Kate is working on her third novel. She is represented by Beverley Slopen of the Beverley Slopen Literary Agency.

Dear Reva,

Well, that was quite a year, wasn’t it?

I kept trying to write you a letter, and then life and the news cycle would overtake it before I could finish it. Eventually, I fell into a kind of paralysis. But it’s a new year, and this is no time for paralysis. We have a lot of work to do.

The last time I was this angry, I was in university, and it was twenty-five years ago, an...

A riveting portraying of a profound friendship between two writers, both enormously talented, one terribly damaged.
More of Kate's books…
“I believe in marriage. I believe that two good people can be happy together for a lifetime. It’s the only thing even close to a religion that I have, and I cling to it with almost messianic zeal. But it is a belief system that makes unreasonable demands on its adherents, all of us sacrificing to the bone for a reward that may or may not come at the end of our days; and all of us steadfastly refusing to see the mounting evidence that long-term happy marriages, if they exist at all, are pretty hard to come by. We all want to think that miracles are possible. Otherwise, marriage is just a lot of hard work.”
Kate Hilton, The Hole in the Middle

“The sad fact is that the past, perhaps especially our own past, is mysterious. Lodged in the present, you move further away each day from the reasons why you took this path or that one. And you’re left with only the story you’ve told yourself, the one with perfect lighting and a flattering angle. The one that even you know doesn’t really look like you.”
Kate Hilton, Just Like Family

“Courage is not the towering oak that sees storms come and go; it is the fragile blossom that opens in the snow.”
Alice Mackenzie Swaim

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”
Nora Ephron

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
Nora Ephron, I Feel Bad about My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman

“When looking for a life partner, my advice to women is date all of them: the bad boys, the cool boys, the commitment-phobic boys, the crazy boys. But do not marry them. The things that make the bad boys sexy do not make them good husbands. When it comes time to settle down, find someone who wants an equal partner. Someone who thinks women should be smart, opinionated and ambitious. Someone who values fairness and expects or, even better, wants to do his share in the home. These men exist and, trust me, over time, nothing is sexier.”
