This is the Tumblr of Josh Lesnick… aka Josh L or superhappy.

I’m a 38-year old artist of (usually) adult webcomics from Minneapolis. I have been posting comics online since 1996.

You may remember me from such comics as Wendy and Cutewendy, which were both very, very 2000s anime comics. After that was Girly, which was a meta retelling of my 2000s anime comics with added storytelling and characterization. While it did often get a bit too experimental for its own good, I am still pretty proud of that series.

I draw You Suck now, a much more positive comic than its title implies. It is about a community college gal, a naive succubus who shows up from nowhere, and the strange friendship that forms between them. I created this comic because I wanted to do a story that was kept relatively simple, plus we never see stories about women being total stud monkeys and I wanted to give it a go.

I created a site called Slipshine back in 2001. This was the first adult comic paysite to properly credit its artists and pay them a fair amount for their work, and it went on to become one of the first sources of exclusively sex-positive comics on the net. I ran this site for nearly 15 years up until January 2016, when Hiveworks took it over. I am still its chief editor.

I am a huge advocate of sex-positive and female-friendly porn in general, simply because there is a hugely disproportionate amount of porn in the other categories. I do enjoy all kinds o’ smut, but I prefer the kind that shows that sex is FUN for EVERYONE involved.

I am also a big advocate for mental health education. As is the case with many comic artists and creative types in general, I have pretty bad depression and other brain issues… but it wasn’t until my 30s when I started seeking real help for it. I kinda grew up thinking I couldn’t be mentally ill because I didn’t need a straight-jacket, or did I believe aliens were broadcasting messages through my teeth.

In the past, there’ve been instances where I lost my temper out in the open online, moments I’m not particularly proud of. If you’ve been following my work for 5-10 years, you probably have seen at least one of those moments. I’m apprehensive to say it was a result of my depression, as I don’t want to say my illness is entirely to blame.  Basically, my depression had a lot to do with it,  but that doesn’t completely excuse me from the rather gross stuff I said… I don’t look back on such things with fondness and I’m workin’ hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Aside from comics, I’ve also been obsessed with videogames for as far back as I remember. Playing Donkey Kong in the arcade may seriously be my earliest memory, and my support for Nintendo hasn’t really waned much since then. The Gamecube is probably my favorite system, but I like the WiiU all right too. Super Mario Maker was kind of a dream come true for me and I have made a few goofy stages for it. I’m also really into the PC Engine and games by Falcom. If I had to pick a favorite game ever, it’d probably be the PCE version of Ys Book 1&2, which I am speedrunning right now. I enjoy streaming my gameplay like a lot of folks these days, but I’m trying to get in the habit of streaming my art more as well, which people seem to prefer for some reason. :)

I use emoticons too much :) :P

And aside from comics and gaming, my other big hobby is karaoke. I’m pretty good at it, from what people tell me, though I don’t plan to pursue a singing career anytime soon. I am a fan of bands from my youth, including the lame ones like Bon Jovi as well as the underrated ones like Fastball… but I enjoy new music too, which is always introduced to me via Minneapolis’s public radio pop station The Current, of which i’m a monthly donator. I’m pretty fond of Jeremy Messersmith, Craig Finn, and Courtney Barnett. and Dave Grohl, of course.

I contribute porn comics to my own site sometimes… and lately I’m trying to step it up. Probably my most known creation for Slipshine is Doctor Voluptua, which, after a few unfortunate hiatuses, will be coming back to complete its latest chapter very soon, and the art will still be done by my collaborator Maya, who will also be taking over the pencil work on You Suck, once Chapter 6 begins… also soon!

I love cats… I live in a townhouse with the two cutest cats ever. Also a fellow comic artist named Diana and a nice dude named John.

Apparently I never posted this to the tumblr, so let’s fix that.

This is Feena and Rhea, the two stoic anime goddesses from the Ys series of games… mostly Ys I, Ys II, and Origins, but I hear they appear briefly in some of the other sequels as well.

This was drawn mainly to decorate my Twitch broadcasts of my Ys I speedrun attempts using Hudson’s PC Engine port of the game. Yeah, I’m doin’ speedruns now because why not! Of all the games I’ve played during my teen years, this was the one I was most obsessed with, so I kind of know it like the back of my hands.

My first successful run ended at 1:17:08. I’ve since refined the route and completed it again at 1:15:23, but as that stream included a messy death, some awful boss fights, and a lot of swearing on my part, I chose not to highlight it. I’ll post a faster one soon!

I streamed the entirety of Day of the Tentacle HD the other day,...

I streamed the entirety of Day of the Tentacle HD the other day, and it was pretty cool, but… yeah. I was apprehensive about buying it at first, since I’ve become a bit weary of 1:1 HD adventure game revisions, and DoTT HD really is just another one of those, as it turns out.

Graphics are redrawn (with the primary goal clearly being to match the original as closely as possible, and results vary), soundtrack now has a redbook sound instead of a MIDI one, and the original voice recordings were dug up and re-encoded to 48k. And beneath the crisper interior, everything feels exactly the same as it did in 1993, for better or worse.

The only improvements I’d consider significant are the addition of achievements, as well as a choice between the original interface and a modern one with the radial menus that are the standard in today’s adventure games. This certainly makes for a smoother experience, especially since this mode leaves out the choices which won’t produce results. And as is often the case with achievements for old adventure games, they encourage the player to find some bits of dialogue and hidden jokes they may have never come across in their original playthrough. (though they’re all hidden, for some reason. Usually they’ll at least give us a hint!)

On the whole, it does look like they put a lot of effort into revamping the game, but it just makes me feel bad because the improvements amount to very little. I understand that 1:1 conversions are needed to include that option to switch between the original and HD versions of the game on the fly… but to be frank, this just isn’t as neat as it was 7 years ago in Monkey Island HD. I’d rather deal with having to play the HD and Classic version separately in exchange for the HD version getting some more tweens here and there, better lip sync, and dialogue that’s re-timed so it sounds like the characters are actually talking to each other.

But hey, it is what it is, and Day of the Tentacle is a good game. Hell, it blew me away back in 1993, as it really was one of the closest ways you could get to playing in a truly interactive cartoon. The characters all have goofy, appealing designs that pass Groening’s “shadow test” with flying colors and the backgrounds are some of the best examples of intentionally-off perspective the 90s has to offer. The humor… well, it’s hit-and-miss, but when it hits, it hits pretty good. It was also the first Lucasarts adventure game to lack deaths, and the puzzles are MUCH less obtuse than the ones in Monkey Island, making for a very chill and frustration-free experience.

Still, if you’ve played the original, I’d suggest staying nostalgic about it, and buy the HD version when it’s on sale. For newcomers, if the game looks good to you, go for it; it IS a fine piece of adventure game history. But trust me… just turn the voice acting off. Not to say the voice actors didn’t do their jobs well, but the lack of timing in the dialogue really does kill half the jokes, which is a shame. Day of the Tentacle is great; it’s really just the general trend of HD adventure games I’m having a problem with. It needs to let go of the “switch between old and new whenever you want!” gimmick and loosen up a bit, methinks.

Anyway, I hope you’ve enjoyed my drawing of Laverne in her ‘Murican Tentacle disguise!
