because… due do how dense and ridiculous the internet has gotten… there probably ARE a great deal of Girly readers who aren’t even aware I am still doing webcomics.
And they REALLY should READ MY NEW(ish) WEBCOMIC
because this comic really is a million times better than Girly, has been very good on my state of mind, and I really want to keep doing more of it.

There’s a scam e-mail going around that says the readers need to be updated with a new model. The e-mail looks super legit and they’ve masked all the URLs pretty well so I actually fell for it — fortunately, I’ve got a bunch of script blockers in place so I didn’t get whatever bug the scammer is trying to pass around.
Just a heads-up.
(reblogged from @yaranyarai) just noting that there IS also a legit version of this, and your square readers DO need to be updated if you have one that’s older than december 2013. you can just log directly into your square account rather than following any links if you aren’t sure!

I checked in at the Square site and there is info about app updates, but I can’t seem to find any notifications at all about new readers. Couldn’t hurt to reorder one and make sure the app’s up to date, though.
Well, this is kind of bizarre. The thing is, Square did indeed redesign their reader. The latest apps are indeed required to be able to use the new readers. But it doesn’t seem to be the case that the new readers are required to continue using Square. The old ones will work fine.
I went and rechecked my email and it does seem to be full of things that raise red flags about phishing attempts, such as links that point to domains like s10xxxxxxx.t.en25.com and such (the email originates from a similar domain as well). Although clicking the links does redirect you to the actual page in the end, and not a bogus page asking for login info… so it doesn’t seem to be phishing, more likely a virus/backdoor attempt.
I gotta say this was a pretty well-planned attack, and I am finding absolutely no information about it online. No statements from Square either, even though the emails went out a couple weeks ago.
Also it is worth nothing that another Square email with similar links titled “Take payments without swiping a card” arrived in my box today. And it coincides with an actual announcement made by Square.
Bottom line, don’t click any links in Square emails for a while.
