Three Day Freebie • DANCING WITH RAVEN

411233_351278101578255_2074302329_oI worked for years in Hollywood, trying to catch my big break. I performed on stage, theater-in-the-park, cable series, industrial videos, soap operas, commercials, television, and films. I also had some lowly jobs, such as a Tour Guide for Universal Studios Hollywood, and I paged many TV shows back in the eighties, such as Who’s The Boss, Roseanne, Empty Nest, My Two Dads, Designing Women, and Seinfeld, to name a few. I was also in L.A. for the Northridge earthquake, an event that left an indelible mark in my memory.

The saying goes, “write what you know,” which is why L.A. forms the backdrop for Dancing With Raven. And it’s a free Kindle download Tuesday, July 29th – Thursday, July 31st. If you’ve ever been to L.A., you’ll recognize some of the locations, and if you’ve never been there, perhaps it will inspire your next vacation…if you dare. ~ S.G.  Rogers

DancingWithRaven_200Tori Moss is no stranger to heartbreak. Raised by a foster mother since the deaths of her parents in a horrific accident, she’s poured herself into ballet. A disappointing audition sends her into an emotional tailspin, but it’s the strangely intriguing new guy in school who catches her as she falls. Although Tori and Raven seem to be nothing alike, they share an uncommon ability to see the sudden flood of demons pouring into Los Angeles. When she discovers a plot to bring about the Apocalypse, Tori must decide whom to trust. One wrong step may cost her everything.

Demons Rise in Beverly Hills • Excerpt from DANCING WITH RAVEN

After the tremor subsided, the valet darted off to collect Misty’s car. As Tori glanced around, she was puzzled. The demon populace was reacting to the earthquake with unbridled euphoria. Although Tori pretended nonchalance, Misty must have noticed a change of expression.

“Are you all right?”

“Just a sudden headache. Nothing to worry about.”

“These frequent quakes are extremely unsettling, aren’t they?”

“A little.”

A blob of purple ectoplasm began to ooze up from the storm drain a few feet away. Tori became increasingly anxious for the valet to bring the car around before the sinister mass took its final form. “A little.”

A blob of purple ectoplasm began to ooze up from the storm drain a few feet away. Tori became increasingly anxious for the valet to bring the car around before the sinister mass took its final form. She cursed the fact she hadn’t slipped the silver dagger into her purse. Of course, killing one demon when I’m surrounded by so many others probably wouldn’t be smart. Nevertheless, I should always have a silver weapon with me at all times — even if it’s just a pen like Raven’s.

The amorphous ectoplasm emerged fully from the drain, slid onto the sidewalk, and drew itself up into humanoid shape. To avoid making it obvious she could see the demon, Tori turned to watch its reflection in the beauty salon window. When the creature sauntered over to stand directly behind her, she gritted her teeth. Stay calm and don’t move! It bent closer, making purring noises deep within its throat.

“Pretty, pretty human.” Purple fingers caressed a lock of her hair, and she bit back a scream. Wait…I’m not completely without protection. She pulled her necklace from underneath her blouse.

“Tori, the car is here!” Misty said.

When she turned around, the demon was grinning—until it noticed the Celtic shield knot amulet now in plain view. It backed away with a hiss. Although she was trembling, Tori lifted her chin and strode past the creature.

“Eat dust, slimeball,” she murmured.

Three Minutes With S.G. Rogers

Where did you get the idea for Tournament of Chance?

Originally, Tournament of Chance was a short story about Heather of the Jagged Peaks, who tries to break through the glass ceiling between commoners and royalty by entering a state-sponsored archery contest. She doesn’t realize the contest is rigged, and exists only to keep the lower class in its place. As I lengthened the concept, more magical elements, romance, and adventure crept in.

How did you develop your lead characters?

I envisioned Heather… (to read more, go HERE).

The Ice Captain's DaughterAt the urging of a best-selling author friend of mine (mystery writer Lois Lavrisa), I went to Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX) to see about turning my Victorian-era romance The Ice Captain’s Daughter into an audio book. After creating an account and preparing a short audition piece, I was ready to accept auditions from voice talent (producers). Days later, I signed a contract with an adorable New York-based actor/singer/voice-over artist named Rachel F. Hirsch. What a leap of faith, to entrust my baby to a virtual stranger! Nevertheless, Rachel has a very pleasant voice and seemed undaunted by the challenge of doing the various dialects the manuscript required.

Lois Lavrisa encouraged me to enter the audio book market because it has worked out very well for her and other authors of her acquaintance.  Of course, her genre and mine are completely different. Perhaps mystery…

Lois Lavrisa encouraged me to enter the audio book market because it has worked out very well for her and other authors of her acquaintance.  Of course, her genre and mine are completely different. Perhaps mystery fans love audio books, whereas historical romance fans don’t! I’m a little concerned about the sales prospects, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, as the cliché goes.

How about you? Have you ever purchased an audio book from retailers such as Audible, Amazon, or iTunes, or been interested in doing so? Let me know your thoughts. ~ S.G. Rogers

On Day Three of Are You Smarter Than an Elizabethan?, the question was from which Shakespearean play did “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child!” originate?  The answer is King Lear.

Thanks for playing! As a reward, Dancing With Raven will be a free Kindle download HERE on Thursday, July 17th  and Friday, July 18th.  Spread the word, and if you enjoy the book, I’d ask you to leave a short review on Amazon.  It’s very much appreciated! ~ S.G. Rogers
