I grew up in a small Ohio town, but decided while studying the states and their capitals in the fourth grade that I would one day live in Maryland. I really liked the flag. Maryland has been my home for almost thirty years.

The first story I ever wrote was about a discarded vacuum cleaner that makes its way back home. When I later saw the movie, The Brave Little Toaster, I was flabbergasted. They stole my idea!

In high school I worked in the shop rack of my father’s Pontiac dealership where I ran parts and prepped new cars. In my leisure time, I learned to play a pretty mean front man on a foosball table.

The stories that stand the test of time share a common theme: The reader is aware of the characters’ love for one another, but the characters themselves don’t realize their feelings are reciprocated. These stories revolve around misunderstandings, false assumptions, and missed opportunities. Meanwhile the reader is longing for them to learn the true nature of their relationship. I appreciate a good tragedy, think Anna Karenina and Romeo and Juliet, but I prefer a book where the characters discover their reciprocated love at last. I have three markers that determine a favorite read: I dog eared a page or two, I am happily satisfied with the ending, and the feelings evoked linger to the point that I wait a few days before beginning my next read. Think Lizzie and Mr. Darcy. That’s my kind of couple and my kind of story.(less)

Ribbons of color: terra cotta, sienna, amber, and a red I never knew existed in nature, stretch before us like the layers of a cake that has baked unevenly.
“See the vein of pink granite?” my mother asks as she points toward the opposite wall of the Grand Canyon. ”The layer below it is 1.4 billion years older.”
The setting sun reflects a dazzling light from the rainbow of rock. I squint, trying... Read more of this blog post »
