Arlene Weintraub is a journalist and author with 20 years of experience writing about health care, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Her new book is Heal: The Vital Role of Dogs in the Search for Cancer Cures. This book, from ECW Press brings to life the world of comparative oncology--the many ways dogs are helping in the war on cancer. Her first book, Selling the Fountain of Youth (Basic Books 2010), is an expose on the anti-aging industry.

Clinical trials in pets pose both challenges and opportunities

Late last year, Connecticut-based Kolltan Pharmaceuticals ran a clinical trial in pet dogs that showed its drug, KTN0158, substantially shrank mast cell tumors, a common form of canine skin cancer.
