Arlene Weintraub is a journalist and author with 20 years of experience writing about health care, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. I believe people are very vulnerable to advertising, and at the same time they're taken in by anything new. At the time I wrote the book, the acai craze was just starting and the Internet was overrun with ads touting it as the fountain of youth (and offering great deals on it, some of which were scams). Acai is new and hot, blueberries are not. That's the simple answer! I remember research a while back offering compelling evidence of the health benefits of all dark-colored fruits, so it is crazy to think that people would pay lots of money for acai (which I understand is not all that tasty) when they can get the same benefits from blueberries!(less)

Clinical trials in pets pose both challenges and opportunities

Late last year, Connecticut-based Kolltan Pharmaceuticals ran a clinical trial in pet dogs that showed its drug, KTN0158, substantially shrank mast cell tumors, a common form of canine skin cancer.
