Character Interview: Mona Boots- child stalker/abductor.

Our first character to sit in the chair is MONA BOOTS. She is the stalker and abductor of Brhin-Kristoffer Teddi.

For months, Mona Boots watched the three year old every Saturday from her table across the McDonald’s Play yard. She wanted him and in her delusion to finally do something right in her life she enters The Perfect Solution Childcare Center and leaves with Brhin-Kristoffer Teddi.
Lets join the interview in progress:

AUTHOR: Hello, Ms. Boots. Uhm, I see we don't have a photo of you. You were supposed to supply us with one.

Mona Boots: I don't want the whole world to know what I look like. What good would it do?

AUTHOR: Okay, Let's just forget about that. Its too late anyway. I think something has been put up. Okay, I read the blurb for the Perfect Solution and want to know how you became involved in this story?

Mona Boots: No, you wrote the blurb. Before I answer that question I want to make it clear I am not delusional. I read what was written about me too and I totally disagree with the description. You could have written something nicer about me.

AUTHOR: Ms. Boots I want you to remember we agreed to this as interviewer to interviewee. Stick to the script.
Mona Boots: Fine.

AUTHOR: Brhin wasn’t your kid and I have to write it as I see it. People will never call a person who has taken a child ‘sane’. What went through your mind to make you take someone else’s child?

Pulling a crumpled, well-studied photograph from her pocket, Mona smiled at the little boy in the print before answering.

Mona Boots: I saw that little boy being neglected by his mother every weekend. She sat at one table and left him alone. He was such a little guy. I decided I wanted him and knew I would do a better job than the little redhead, they call his mother. I watched them all of the time and when opportunity hit, BAM! I took it.

AUTHOR: Speaking of mothers, what does your mom think of you? What was your childhood like?

Mona Boots: I don’t want to talk about that woman. She ran off and left me with a man who wasn't my father. As for my childhood....pssst, it was no different than more than half of Americas. It was a typical dysfunctional mess. A little bit of physical and mental abuse. Nothing I couldn’t handle.

AUTHOR: I read about a couple of traumatic experiences in your past. Something about a baby you were in charge of and the way your father died. Do you want to explain that?

Mona Boots:  My dad deserved everything that happened to him. If you read what you wrote in the book you would know that. What happened to that baby was because I was young and didn’t know anything about taking care of babies. I know better now.

AUTHOR: Right, let's get back to
Brhin, did the child go with you willingly? How did you get him?

Mona Boots: I just went to his class and they gave him to me. He was a little bit nervous, nothing
I didn't expect, but he was happy to be with me.

AUTHOR: Really? What did you do while he was with you?

Mona Boots: We enjoyed the room I set up for him in my home and all of the toys I bought him.

AUTHOR: If he liked being with you so much why did he lock himself in the bathroom of the McDonalds?

Mona Boots: You know what I’m not answering anymore questions. I was humiliated in that restaurant. I was made to feel like a criminal. I’m not even gonna mention what happened later.

Standing, Mona collects the little picture from the chair's cushion, and stuffs it into her back pocket as she walks out of the room mumbling.

Interviews: The Cast of the Perfect Solution

The Cast of the Perfect Solution

We begin our interviews (in order of appearance or last to first whichever way you start) with the people involved in the novel, THE PERFECT SOLUTION. The Perfect Solution is a novel of a horrendous and unimaginable act. Anger destroys a relationship. A teen babysitter decides to go to college. A single parent places her child in daycare. A three year old is mistakenly given to a stalker by his pre-school teacher. Mona Boots wanted Brhin-Kristoffer Teddi as her child. In her delusion she walks into The Perfect Solution Daycare Center and out with him in her arms. It is a choice she is prepared to defend. Traumatizing to a single mother, unimaginable to an accused father, and detrimental to a child’s safety. The Perfect Solution- terrifying look into the world of childcare, its weaknesses and the terrible cost of those weaknesses.

Through a series of mistakes that occur in the overcrowded confusion of his classroom, three year old, Brhin-Kristoffer Teddi is forced by his pre-school teacher to leave the center with a woman he does not know. The Perfect Solution is an analysis of choices made by individuals and the way those choices interweave with the lives of others.

Author: Okay, Ms. Wall sorry it took so long. All of our bottles were gone so I had to run a floor down to get water. I’m going to have a talk with the receptionist. So, let’s get to the interview.Bertha Wall: Before we start, I just want to make it clear I didn’t give that little boy away. That silly little girl and the office worker did.

AUTHOR: Yes, we know that. We also know you let a lot of things in that daycare get past you. Our main question is ‘why did you open the childcare center? What was your main purpose?
Bertha Wall: To tell the truth my first thought was the money I could make without really having to work. I thought as the director I would be able to designate what I wanted done and just sit back and collect the money. I hadn’t counted on the staff being a hive of idiots.

AUTHOR: Ms. Wall I have talked to a few of your past staff members and it seems you had a lot of problems in the center. Children forgotten on outings, electrocution, abuse….
Bertha Wall: Abuse? What are you talking about? Let me tell you something I don’t know who you were talking with, but it’s probably someone I fired. There was no abuse at my daycare centers and I’ll sue anyone who says so.  Bertha points angrily at the camera.  How dare you put this kind of thing on the air when it isn’t true.
AUTHOR: What about the child whose arm was broken by that teacher? Why do you hire incompetent people? Why do you defy the law and the required child/staff ratio?
Bertha Wall: I thought you were talking about sexual abuse or something. None of that is going on. When I hire people I do the required checks and hire experienced people. You can’t tell how a person will work until they are on the job. This is with any profession. You think my center is the only one with problems? They all have them. Some are just better hidden. As for the number of children in the rooms, I can’t help it when the people don’t come to work and in the meantime the children are switched from room to room until a sub comes in.
AUTHOR: Is that what happened that day? From all of the reports that's not exactly what went on in the room with Ms. Franklin. Evidence shows there was utter chaos in that room, really in the entire center that day.
Bertha Wall: That was a mistake… Visibly upset, Bertha closes her eyes and wipes her face with a crumpled Kleenex gripped in her fists.  I’ve had enough. Tell your audience to buy the book if they want to know more. I gotta go.

Bertha stands, gathers her bag and jacket from the floor and leaves the room. AUTHOR: I guess that will end our interviews for today. Tomorrow, hopefully, we’ll get a chance to hear from Stephanie Franklin, the younger caregiver who gave the poor child to the abductor. See you tomorrow

Stay, take your shoes off and grab a drink - there are plenty more interviews and excerpts for you to enjoy:

The story dealing with the abduction of a pre-K student from a day care center shows the necessity for more stringent safety measures to be applied to all day care centers. The characters are sympathetically protrayed and you do feel concern for their perdicament, but you just wanted to shake the people who ran the day care center and ask "What were you thinking" I would recommend this to anyone who would enjoy a well-paced suspense story. Patricia Hardy "patticake 545"

“Taking Care is no Joke. The Perfect Solution...A page turner. A book every parent that has a child in daycare or considering putting a child in daycare should read. Nancy Y. Wade's debut book looks into how each parent should be reminded that we are our child's first teachers Taking Care is no JokeA. Wilson (Beaumont, TX USA) Child Protective Services

“The truest statements. As owner of The Learn & Play Day care center, I recommend the Perfect Solution by Ey. Wade. It has sparked my concerns as both a parent and a center owner. My concerns for the safety of the young lives in my hands were to such an extent that I implemented new security measures into the center.”-- the truest statementsM. Swopes (Beaumont, Texas USA) -Owner/Director Learn and Play Child Development Center  “Reading the book "The Perfect Solution" was definitely an "eye opener." Being a caregiver for many years as well as a Director of a daycare, I would highly recommend this book as a required reader for a training class in Child Development. Using it to create make believe situations to train potential caregivers to see what could be done to stop things like that from happening. I don't think the general public realizes the impending dangers that lurk around day cares from desperate people who are not allowed to see their child(ren) or people who are desperate to have their own child(ren) such as in the book. This book is definitely a "Wake Up Call" to parents and caregivers who have to rely on any Child Care Center.”  Concerned Caregiver,Donna Guilbeau
“I totally enjoyed this serious but tasteful book. Ey Wade wrote her book based on her  years in child care and most parents will appreciate her candid insight concerning their children well being in even the best established day care centers. From the very first word until the last; I found myself reading the book and mentally visualizing what was going on just like I was at a movie. She carefully described every setting and explained how all the characters would have a role in the final outcome. The book was very well written and easily read. I believe this was purposefully done. A lot of authors love throwing out big words and confuse their audience. Nancy must have realized that most people like to read but hate having to pull out a dictionary to understand what is going on. In conclusion; the author wrote a great book and one that should be on the best sellers list.” Ernest Johnson (Maryland)
“Ms.Wade, your book help my interest from page 2 and I couldn't put the book down until I read the very last page. Loved the characters and it makes you think about some day cares and questions that opens the mind about day cares. All pay more attention when children talk. Keep writing more books and let me know when your next book is publish.” The Perfect Solution, E.Jones (Texas)

The Author Explains the Case for The Perfect Solution

THE CASE FOR THE PERFECT SOLUTIONIt's not What You Can Do For Us~ 3 Reasons for SuspenseThis is one of the most important interviews we will have. It concerns a child, a trusted childcare arrangement, and a failure.
Join me as I welcome the cast of The Perfect Solution, the tale of a small boy mistakenly given to a stalker by his preschool teacher.

When you finish hearing their story, you will be asking yourself, Who is watching the people that are watching your children?
THE TRAILER
Welcome our guests, Austin Sanchez, Catrine Teddi, and Brhin-Kristoffer Teddi. Please take time to read the other interviews.
Let's begin with the youngest member, Brhin.

Brhin-Kristoffer, if we had to ask you what people could learn from reading your story, what would be your response?

"Huh?" Brhin walked around the room fingering then nicknacks.
"She means, what would you say, sweetie." Catrine explained to the little boy. "Please , come over and still, Son."

"Okay, Mommy. I hope people will see how smart and strong I was and I never gave up that I would see my mommy, again. If you listen to what your mommy teaches you, she will always find you."

;"Yes, she will. The main thing the reader will receive from reading The Perfect Solution , are tips on what to pay attention to when searching for centers and once the child is placed in the hands of the caregiver. What I learne from this entire episode was to follow  your first instinct. If you feel things are out of sorts, check them out. I did everything I thought I should have, to make sure the day care center was the best place to leave Brhin. Beautiful and as well supplied as it was, there were too many mistakes, overcrowded, lies.

"Once a reader finishes the story, they will understand the rules for the running of childcare centers, how to handle personal relationships, and believe it or not, self-control."

"Self-control. What do you mean, self-control? You and that little woman of yours showed me no respect. All I wanted to do was love him. All I wanted to do was have a little boy of my own. I should've shut the both of you up when I had the chance.. "

Ladies and gentleman, it seems as if the abductor has sneaked into the building.
You weren't invited to this interview, Mona. Security!!

"I'll leave, but before I do," Mona stopped to address the room before stepping out of the door. "I will say this, If the people running the centers don't learn how to be observant, this story could really happen."

Well, I have to say I agree with her. If parents are not dilligent, and caregivers are not doing their jobs, this story could become a headline on the evening news. Well, thank you Catrine, Austin, and Brhin for the visit, I see Mona is being detained by security soo this would be a good time for you all to leave .

"Yes, that's a good idea. Come along Catrine." Austin lifts the little boy and walks towards the door. "I'm sure we'll see you, again. Goodbye"
Well, I’ve been sitting here for the last thirty minutes waiting for our next visitor, Bertha Wall the owner/director of the Perfect Solution Child care Center. Uhm, I have called her and she says she is running late and so to fill the time The Voice will interview me. What better way for the reader to learn the reasoning for the manuscript The Perfect Solution then through the author, right?
THE VOICE : Glad you could step in at the last minute, Ms. Wade.

Ms. Wade : Not a problem I'm just sitting here.

T HE VOICE : I know Ms. Wall is on the way so let's get as much as we can done. Whatever we don't cover we can finish on another day. First question. What made you write the book and why did you choose the title The Perfect Solution?

Ms. Wade: I can cover both questions with one answer. The Perfect Solution is a story about the choices we believe are the perfect ones for ourselves and how they can backfire, whirlpool and entrap another. It's like a perfect circle. Everything always comes back.

THE VOICE : Interesting thought. But why have a child abducted from a daycare center?

Ms. Wade: As you know I have worked in the childcare profession for over thirty years. My first idea was to write a book on how to choose a child care center, but I thought of all the books on the market and nixed the idea.I was at work in a center and someone was sent to my class to get a child. Well I didn't know the person and the staff in the office hadn't checked their identification. It scared me. What if I had sent the child home with that person? The making of the story just clicked in my mind. Other incidents of near misses and neglect in childcare from the past years fit right in the book.

THE VOICE: What about the relationship of the parents? How do you feel about them?

Ms. Wade: Most of the women I know are single parents and their state was always a choice made by the father. I wanted a different angle. I really like the parents and I hope their feelings for each other comes through in the book.

THE VOICE : Do you think you made the child a little too smart. I mean he's three years old.
Ms. Wade: No, I don't. As a matter of fact the child is closer to four than three and a child can learn anything if it is taught. He really only knew the basic of what every child should know. Enough to get him saved.

THE VOICE : I guess so. I have to ask you this about Mona Boots. Did you have any sympathy for her
Ms. Wade: Yes. I really do feel for anyone in her situation. She has her manic moments, but I have to say she really loves Brhin. I hope she gets the mental help she really needs.

THE VOICE: Talking about people who need help. Do you really believe Bertha Wall will be able to save her center's reputation.

Ms. Wade: I don't know. The woman is in denial. She won't face facts about the incompetent way she runs the place. Everything is the fault of someone else.

The door opens and Bertha wall enters.

Bertha Wall: Hi, I heard my name. Were you calling me in or just talking about me?

THE VOICE: Both as a matter of fact. I was interviewing our author, but we can finish later. I'll leave and let her get to work.

Ms. Wade: Thanks Voice for stepping in. Ms. Wall, I'll get us some water and I'll be right back.

Bertha Wall: I'll be here.

Ms. Wade:Audience, while you are waiting go on and read the next interview. And be sure to click the pictures.

Sometimes, Insanity Keeps You Sane. THE PERFECT SOLUTION

Sometimes It's The Insanity That Keeps You Sane.
Mona left the room. She walked down the short hallway into the rear of the house and into a small bedroom. She looked around the room in satisfaction and pride. The small room was the only other bedroom in the house and she had designated it to Brhin. From the matching car/truck motif on the wall paper border and comforter on the racing car shaped bed, and to the shelf of toys against the wall showed that the entire room had been decorated with a little boy in mind.
"Brhin will love it here. He'll be glad that I brought him home and he'll love this room when he sees it."  She danced around in her joy. Her every thought and action in decorating the room had been geared by thoughts of Brhin. From the very first sight of him, four months previously and every day since, Brhin had become her reason for living. The first time she saw him she thought he seemed so cute putting in his breakfast order at the McDonald's across from her house. That 'little redhead' (she refused to even think of the skinny little woman as his mother) had been holding him at eye level to the cashier and he had stated his wishes in a clear concise manner. The cashier had giggled good-naturedly when Brhin insisted on ordering nuggets for breakfast and he had laughed along with her. Eaves dropping on their short conversation, she had gathered the information that Brhin and the cashier went through the same little drama every Saturday morning and she had silently chuckled along with them. Amused with the verbal exchange and entranced with the joy for life that the child exhibited, she had become enamored with him. From then on, it had become her business to be at the Mc Donald's on Saturdays when the 'little redhead' brought Brhin in for breakfast.
She would sit in a different area and watch his every move. It was hard to pinpoint the exact day that had made her decide she wanted the child as her own, but deep in her soul she had known. The need to have Brhin had gotten so absorbing that she knew there was no way she could live without him. Saturday became the only day in the week that gave her reason to go on.

Finding Your Platform as an Author

Today we start our blog tours with Tossing it Out on the topic of finding a landing to stand on. In other words, what is your platform.

Tossing It Out      ▼  Finding a Platform: Guest Hijacker Ey Wade {I'm late sharing this} Ey Wade first caught my attention a couple years ago during one of the A to Z Challenges.  Her blog posts hit controversial issues head on and always make for some interesting and thought-provoking reading.  When you finish reading today's guest post make sure you go on over to visit her blog.   And now I'm pleased to present Ey Wade.
Finding a Platform
I have (I think) finally found my writing platform. I have read a lot about the need of one and could never really figure out what to build on and now I know. After following a few articles from recommendations on Twitter I became aware of headlines which fit so well with manuscripts I have been working on. I found it amazing how close headlines fit to the works of the written word.
My platform is based on the premise life demands action. Whether it is nonfiction, YA depicting bullying and teen pregnancy, picture books teaching morals and life skills, or a novel making a statement will be the goal. There are many things happening in the world which ticks me the hell off. I, as a citizen in the ‘real’ world can’t change society with a flick of my hand, but my laptop keys can kick butt and change fallacies. I can write people to fulfill my dreams. I can have them do what needs to be done and get away with it.
Because I think a proven rapist (especially of a child) should be caught, then beaten to death on the spot and because I am tired of injustices in the judicial system where it seems sexual predators, pedophiles, and deviants have lenient sentences or get away with their crime I wrote the novel,   The Fishing Trip, where the good guy is the grey matter.  In The Fishing Trip a man named Durham takes revenge on all of the child molesters he in his town where perverts are prevalent. In the novel some of the most violent and horrendous acts on children are performed and the abusers face retribution. In my opinion anyone who has the sick mind to rape and/or commit other acts of violence on children, should just accept the fact they will die without a trial.  I know it’s not as easy as black and white, but I bet if redemption fell hard on creeps like that, this sort of crime would end quickly, I'm just sayin'. There are other countries that don't play with this aspect of society. In the hope of helping people get to know my characters I developed a blog where I interview the characters from my books. THE FISHING TRIP @ In the Chair . Come over and get to meet them.
My life demanding action platform (which must have been festering in my subconscious) caused me to write Beads on a String America's Racially Intertwined History. You can learn all about the reasons behind this enormous feat HERE.        The Perfect Solution which is discussed Here had the first characters to sit In the Chair  .  http://theinterviewedcharacter.blogspot.com
These are just a few of my steps unto my platform. I shall be polishing my words, strengthening my platform and building me a bookshelf. Because I shall write the best novels and I will need a place to put all my published books.
About the Author: I am a caged in frustrated author of thought provoking, mind bending e-books, an occasional step-in parent, a fountain of knowledge, and ready to share. Knowing me as a writer and author is like cracking an egg’s shell in the air and wondering how far the splatter will spread.

I already love Ey Wade's style of writing and I haven't even checked out her blog yet. I'm so glad that you feel like you've finally found your platform and wish you the best of luck in your book and future Ey.

This is totally cool stuff. Sharing this one on FB and Twitter.

Being a mother who has witnessed two men, who worked around my children and church and the YMCA, be arrested for this, I'd like to see a better system. Thank goodness my kids were safe. I guess being paranoid with my kids has paid off.

ReplyL. Diane Wolfe

We do need a better system.

I was lucky I established my platform early, as everything revolves around my speaking now.

ReplyKaren Lange

Thank you, Lee, for sharing Ey with us! I find her approach refreshing and thought provoking.

Replycleemckenzie

I love "poetic justice," and I when I write anything I think about it. It's something that doesn't often happen in real life, but it's something that can happen if we want it to in our stories. The thing to avoid when poetic justice is uppermost in your mind and you're typing away is the cliche. That's the hard part.

Great to meet you here on Tossing It Out!

ReplyAlex J. Cavanaugh

Tough subjects to tackle but somebody has to!

ReplyLena Winfrey Hayat

Ey, glad you have found your platform. And it really helps to be passionate for a cause and to write about it. Writing should be used as a positive tool to make change in the world. And sometimes there needs to be some controversy to force things to get done. Good luck on your book and in everything you do!

ReplyTheresa Milstein

Arlee, thanks for introducing me to Ey Wade. Life demands action is a wonderful philosophy. I do shy away from topics on my blog, but I don't think anything would be off limits in a book, if the idea/character came to me.

ReplyCarol Kilgore

I agree with Theresa.

ReplyPhilip Verghese 'Ariel'

Hi Arlee,
Good to be here again.
Good Post Indeed, but can't fully agree with the punishment she wants to give the guilty. Its practically not possible, but at the same time they must not escape the law of the land. They must be rewarded with severe punishments, but not to the utmost of killing, that is to be left out to the creator of the universe. Thanks Arlee for introducing her thru these pages
Best
Philip

ReplyJ.L. Campbell

Ey sounds like quite a radical. As a writer, I tell my stories even if the subjects are controversial. I wouldn't be true to myself if I avoid telling a tale that I have strong feelings about.

ReplyEy Wade

Thanks so much everyone for stopping by. I appreciate you liking my writing YeamieWaffles. Thanks for sharing Shelly. Ciara it's really scary not knowing who to trust with the care of your children. Which is why I wrote the novel, The Perfect Solution. After so many years in the profession I have seen a lot.
Again all thank you so much for your comments. I'll be watching to see your writings.

ReplyDeleteUnknown

The Fishing Trip is a great book and it's impossible not to love Durham.

One of Ey's greatest strengths as a writer is her ability to 'tell it like it is'. She's not afraid to speak up for the little people and so that's what she does. Don't ever stop Ey, they need you.

ReplyEy Wade

Thank you so much, MT. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book. I have so much more to talk about, I'm no where near stopping.

ReplyDeletenutschell

I actually agree with Ey in terms of this sexual predators. I think it's the worst possible crime--maybe worse than taking a person's life, is taking his dignity. I'm definitely going to read this book!

ReplyEy Wade

Thank you so much. Nutschell I'm really sure you will like The Fishing Trip. Of course I think its a fantastic book, but I've heard from others the book is pretty good.

ReplyDeleteChristine Rains

I'd definitely like to see a better system. As a mother, I'm petrified of anything like that happening to my child. As for my writing, it's more for fun than controversy. My heroines are usually very morale, though, only because that's how I am.

The School of Fiction Podcast

Matt Posner -From Pen to Podcast "The School of Fiction"

Welcome back to In the Chair, folks. I know it's been a while but we're here with a special guest, Matt Posner, a writer who loves the process of writing, sharing his knowledge with others, and networking with the masses.

Matt Posner is a writer and amateur photographer from Queens, New York and a high school teacher in Brooklyn. Originally from Florida, Matt has lived in New York City since 1999. You can join Matt at his new school on YouTube, The School of Fiction where he chats with new and experienced authors. To ask questions, suggest topics, or arrange an appearance on the channel, or to hire Matt for personal appearances: send an email to: the.school.of.fiction@gmail.com

Without taking up more time, let's get to it. Welcome , Matt. Tell us, When did you start writing, and what did youwrite about?

Hey, Ey, would you believe I did thisinterview with you around 2011 or 2012?

Yes, I remember. It was to introduce your novel. That interview can be seen HERE. You were a prolific guest then and you have so much more to share now.

We’ve known each other for that long –and so far as I know we agree about absolutely everything. You’re the best.Moving to the question, I began writing on an electric typewriter around theage of 10, and committed myself to be a writer in seventh grade, although insixth grade I had already written a kind of Star Wars type space opera novel. Istill remember the characters, too.

Wow, that should've been interesting. What is the difference in your perceptionbetween now and the time you started writing?

Well, I was eleven or twelve… I guess I feltvery hopeful for the possibility of a career when I was a young man. Themarketplace was very different then. Publishers bought more books and developedthe midlist – a stable of authors who would sell moderately and build upreadership over time. With the corporatization and conglomeration of bookpublishers into large media companies starting in the 90s, midlist author slotsbecame fewer, and bestsellers were the goal. After Amazon and social media, authors are now supposed to market themselves also.

True. The profession seems to have fallen away from promoting the  person and more into the profit line. Marketing, that's the hardest part of being an author, especially for the homebody, like me.

So, tell us about the books youhave published, and what brought you to publishing each one of them.

I wrote a series of YA urban fantasy magicbooks called the School of the Ages series, which I self-published. I just lovethat subject. It’s out of fashion now, but I started in 2001, even before 9/11.Begin with School of the Ages:  The Ghostin the Crystal, but please be kind – it is now fifteen years old… That seriesreached a decent stopping point at book IV, but maybe someday I will be able toget book V out, since a lot of it has been written.

Ialso wrote a few nonfiction books, including a writer’s manual called How toWrite Dialogue to which you contributed, Ey.

Yes, and I thank you for that opportunity. It's a good book with various authors sharing their techniques. And one that deserves attention.

And I also wrote Squared Circle Blues,a dark and profane literary novel about professional wrestling that sadly forme got its sales spiked by a very detailed bad review a few years ago.

Ultimately, I felt I wasn’t getting anywherewith this sort of career, so I decided to reinvent myself under a pseudonym asa romance writer, and I continued my career for a few years writing under thepseudonym MJ Post, initially with my author bestie, Mysti Parker, who mentoredme, and then on my own for a while. Chef Showdown is my best book as MJ.Covid-19 killed that for me; I just couldn’t see writing romance when death wasin the air. I suspect MJ will come back some time, but maybe I will show my realface and give my real name, since now I know that male romance writers existand just need a different marketing style to succeed.

That's so cool, writing all undercover. I do hope you get a chance to finish your series and put out a few romance stories as yourself. Tell us, what made you want to start a podcast and what doyou see as the purpose for it? I, have truly enjoyed watching the videos and am learning quite a bit from your guests.

An author these days needs a social mediaplatform. During the years since 2020, when I stopped self-publishing, I cameto admire YouTubers more and more and wanted to be one. Whensoever I mightreturn to self-publishing, it will only make sense if I have built an audiencein some other way. There are no decent tools for selling books online in theoversaturated market with an audience highly resistant to advertising. As aYouTuber with a good following, however, and a good set of promotional partnerslike you, any books I release will be able to get some favorable attention.

I chose the topic of how to write fictionbecause I am technically an expert in it, between my academic degrees and moreimportantly my more than forty years of experience. I also chose it because Iflat out like meeting and interviewing writers. I enjoyed doing it on a websiteback during the indie author bubble, when you and I became friends, and now Iam enjoying it even more when I can do it over Zoom --and use othertechnologies that were less powerful back then, like iPhone software -- tospeak and interact in real time.

5    How do you choose your guests?

I am looking for a variety of categories ofexpertise and life experience. I want to interview people I’ve known a longtime, and senior writers, but I want to bring in young ones also who have verydifferent perspectives than I have. The one requirement for an interview withme is being able to teach my audience something about fiction writing that youhave practiced, or to teach my audience and me something about book marketing, which is a separate and super challenging task now equally important.

Tellme, how do you go about writing your books? Do the ideas just pop in your heador do you have to plot and plan?

I’ve been talking to a variety of other authors about this during theirinterviews. I’m a hybrid plotter-pantser, and I use music to trigger ideas andwork through problems. I’ll save the rest for an upcoming video.

I’mhaving a bit of a hard time marketing my books. What are your techniques and doyou feel they are working?

Sorry, I can’t market at all. All my sales as Matt came from the Amazonalgorithm, and as MJ, they came from working with Mysti, who had a biggerplatform. I’ll be inviting people to talk about this on my channel.

No problem, your response in itself turns out to be a marketing idea, network with others. Where can the audience purchase your books? Give links

I’m currently Amazon exclusive. I’d love to get some sales on ChefShowdown by MJ Post. https://www.amazon.com/Chef-Showdown-Romance-MJ-Post/dp/1721145036

I must say, the reviews are enticing. What hobbies or activity do you enjoy other than writing?

I’m a world traveler, focusing on Europe and sometimes Asia. Of course Ican’t do that all the time! On weekends I’m a flower and macro photographer.

Mywife Julie encouraged me to develop an interest in photography when I had aperiod of writer’s block that ran from 2020 till last year (2024). She’s waybetter than me, though! But photography meant a lot to me when I needed tofight the hollowness that came from being unable to sit and tell stories.

Ooooh, yes. I have seen your photos and your wife's on Instagram, they're beautiful. As are the places you've visited.

I see our time is up and I want to thank you, Matt, for coming to sit in The Chair. And as a reminder audience, you can see Matt on YouTube at The School ofFiction and maybe even become a guest.  And as always, thank you for visiting In The Chair.
