The cause is only supernatural in a pseudo-science kind of way, and yes, I do have a sequel outlined. But I need to get enough readers for the first one if my publisher is going to consider picking up the second :)

So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the review, and the question.(less)

So sorry--I am only seeing this now. I'm delighted that you are enjoying the book, and enjoying it vocally haha! Goldsport is VERY LOOSELY based on a real place, though I've tweaked the geography somewhat. A small town in coastal Maine called Cutler. Puffin Island is based on Machias Seal Island, which is off the coast of Cutler and ENTIRELY worth a visit if you like puffins or islands or lighthouses. Fun fact: in early drafts it was called Puffin Rock, until I realized there is a kid's show that bears that name :)(less)

"I read this years ago and still regularly come back and reread it. It's so wonderfully creepy, and I won't spoil the plot twist, but WOW, it's a hell of a plot twist!!!! It has characters you want to root for, a mystery you want to solve, and all in " Read more of this review »

Feels at times hardboiled, and noir-adjacent. A propulsive read about at an insular community of faith, out of place and entirely at home in central Ohio. I went into this free of expectations, and was pleased with where I ended up.

"A book about a pandemic-turned-apocalypse written just before our own global pandemic seems very timely, but don't let the timing fool you; this book is so different from many of the other pandemic-centric books I've read over the years I'm surprised" Read more of this review »

Yes yes, I know this is another Ishiguro book about self-denying devotion and service, in a cold but neatly appointed world that is decaying around the edges. But he writes them so well. This + Never Let Me Go + Remains of the Day are three studies o ...more

“My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres; it’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you're lucky.”

“Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.”
