Everything about the job, even the crap parts. That's because I've wanted to be an author since I was 11 years old and to be one is a dream come true. Same as my acting work - getting paid to do what you love, to share great passions with an audience, is simply wonderful.(less)

I was playing with my, then, three year old son in a hotel room in Flims, Switzerland. We were playing using a foldaway airport map and a few toys. I landed planes and drove baggage carts etc, doing all the normal stuff. He, wit ha low boredom threshold, picked up a dragon figure and landed it on the runway. 'Ooo,' I thought. 'Commercial dragon flights.' And from that little seed came Heart of Granite. A book with no commercial dragon flights :) but that's evolution of an idea for you. Cheers, James(less)

It’s a question many writers dread and I think it’s because it’s so hard to give any sort of concrete answer. Mostly. I mean, they come from anywhere and everywhere. They pop into your head unbidden (inspired by something you’ve seen or heard whether consciously or not, most likely) and then refuse to budge until you’ve exami Read more of this blog post »

This is a fantastic middle grade novel. Stuffed full of action, adventure and a cast of characters that are so real, so genuine.

There was so much I loved about this book. The knowledge that there was something that had happened before that informed

“It isn't funny," said Ben. "I just don't like open water. Not to swim in."
Yron crooked a finger and reluctantly Ben waded out the yard or so to him and the log.
"I'll let you into a secret," said Yron. "You won't need to swim."
"No?" Ben's face brightened.
"No. When the croc grabs you, you don't get the chance.”
James Barclay, Elfsorrow

“We have knowledge. We have to do something." His first punched the hair. "Who is with me!"
Noone of the moved so much as a muscle.”
James Barclay, The Vault of Deeds

“So, you can sort it?" Hirad's whisper was gruff. "Our elven friends are getting nervous about rapidly closing patrolmen and I'm getting old.”
