The next book I'm working on, Jenni, what I think is best described as a time travel drama, is nearly finished now. Hopefully, I'll have it finished in at least a Kindle-worthy format in the next month or two.

They say, although you never really know how reliable 'they' are, 500,000 people go missing every year and are never heard from again. That could be America only, or it might be worldwide. I never cared enough to pay that much attention. No one I knew ever disappeared, and the odds said no one I ever knew ever would. Half a million out of even three hundred million is easy to avoid, isn't it? There's more people in New York City, and I've never been there. I don't know anyone who has.

There's so many more pressing matters to think about, anyway. Schedules, the math teacher that insists on the worst pop quizzes ever, is the pretty boy across the room in History smiling at me or the girl behind me? Or is he that enraptured in Roman military maneuvers? Can I afford lunch today or afford to skip it? Just how much of this superfluous homework can I skim and beg out of? What's on at seven? Who gave this bus driver a license anyway?

I never had the sort of free time I'd need to think that, really, I'm playing a lottery with crappy odds I didn't ask to play in. Every single person I know is another entry every year, and first prize is ending up among those people that lose someone who never reappears.

Sooner or later, there's a lot of people who win the grand prize jackpot they didn't know they were competing for.

At seventeen the state of Oregon doesn't think I'm ready for the cut-throat world of scratch tickets and guessing lottery numbers.

Turns out there's some lotteries out there that you don't need to play to win.

Some people see their numbers on the television, some people have to wrestle them back from enthusiastic shop owners, and then some people take the scenic route from the bus stop and run into a wall of light and weightlessness halfway home.

Lucky me.
