A Single Shade of Gray (Part 3): EmbracingYour Inner Hag

red_flickrI’ve been struggling a bit this week with the whole concept of going gray. I said as much to the BF, stating that I hated the way I looked. He shrugged and confessed that he hated the way he looked as well.

WHAT? Okay, first of all, I had this mistaken idea that most guys rated themselves higher in the looks department than women did. I know, I know, working from a stereotype here, but how many women do you know that openly criticize their appearance compared to the same number of men who do t...

A Single Shade of Gray: Aging in the Culture of “Young and Thin”Part 2

Farrah Fawcett_wikipediaI’ve spent an awful lot of time this past week looking at women’s hair.

Yes, you might say I was a wee bit obsessed on the subject. But as I stated in my previous post, growing up as a young girl who was frequently told how ‘homely’ she was, my luxurious mane was my one claim to fame, the one thing people were most likely to comment on, and even envy.

In the past couple of months, I’ve lost somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of my previous hair volume. Some people would say this makes me about even w...

A Single Shade of Gray: Women, Aging, and Sexuality in the Culture of Youth

Good Hair Day_RedI’ve been contemplating this blog post for a while now.

See, the one constant of my entire life has been my long, thick hair. It’s been one of my identifying characteristics as long as I can remember. My dad’s nickname for me when I was a child was “a bag of bones and a hank of hair.” It was incredibly apt and I spent most of my formative years slightly resenting that nickname until I found out it that the line actually came from the lyrics of a very old song. Hairdressers never failed to comm...

The Boys of Summer is one of Jessewave’s Best of 2013!

Pop A CorkI was just cruising around Twitter when I discovered that The Boys of Summer made Jessewave’s list of Best M/M Romances of 2013 by guest reviewer Orion! Wow! You could knock me over with a feather–I never expected that! What a nice thing to stumble across! :-)

I’m gobsmacked, I am. I mean, when you think about all the books that reviewers read in the course of a year, it’s amazing that anyone would like one of your stories enough to put it on their “Best of” list. :-)

In more grumbly news, apparent...

The Year of Living Without Deprivation…

christmas tree_stevep2008All things considered, Christmas wasn’t too bad this year. I spent a ridiculous amount of time baking, and since most of the gluten-free baked items turned out to be inedible, I reneged on my vow to stay gluten free over the holidays. I made dozens of cookies, I baked at least four batches of sausage balls. I cooked for the family gathering and got saddled with most of the leftovers. Today I gave away as much of the baked goods as possible, though it hurt a little to do so. Cheese straws that...

The only piece of writing advice you’ll ever need. Seriously.

spitfire bottom viewWell, The Boys of Summer Book Tour is winding down into the last couple of days, but there is still plenty left on tap to do and see!

Today, I have a post up about writing advice. I don’t know about you, but it seems to me there is a lot of advice floating around out there. Some good, some bad. How do you know which to follow? Logic would dictate that advice from a best-selling author would seem to be the best advice to take–but that author may not live in similar circumstances to you, or may...

A stunning 5 Star Review for the Boys of Summer!

happy womanIf I had a picture of myself right now, with my hands clasped over my mouth as I read Sophie’s review of The Boys of Summer on Evolved World, I would use it. Because that’s my reaction on reading this review–surprised delight and barely contained glee. :-)

As it is, I have to use this generic woman from flickr. com. :-) What a fantastic review! You know, I’m staggered every time someone posts a really positive review for this story. I feel like Sally Field at her Oscar acceptance speech: “They like...
