To discern what is truly essential we need space to think, time to look and listen, permission to play, wisdom to sleep, and the discipline to apply highly selective criteria to the choices we make.
Space never just presents itself on our schedule anymore. There are so many disruptions, interruptions, and options. For example, I had just recently finished writing my new book, Effortless, and had put off many other commitments to be in what I call “monk mode” to get the book done. When it was done it was tempting to jump immediately back into all the backlog of commitments. But my wife, Anna, suggested that it was essential that we both take a couple of weeks to think, plan, talk, and dream. It was such a powerful experience that I invited Anna to share it with my podcast audience. I have

If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.
This sentence is truer today than it was when I wrote it. I have had the honor to hear from people the world over who have let other people prioritize their lives for them. One man wrote to me and said, “I wish I had read this book 50 years ago.” I know he was trying to pay me a compliment, but I feel sad to think of the life choices behind that statement. Essentialism is about taking responsibility for the prioritization of your own life. And I think the longer we live, the truer we will find this idea.

In this example is the basic value proposition of Essentialism: only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter.
I struggle with this myself, especially since I wrote ESSENTIALISM. There have been so many opportunities that I want to say yes to, things that are a definite yes. And sometimes it still becomes too much. And it has begged the question, “What do you do when you really do have too many essentials?” In fact, that is why I wrote my new book, Effortless, to answer this question and find out how to make doing what’s essential easier.

Instead of making just a millimeter of progress in a million directions he began to generate tremendous momentum towards accomplishing the things that were truly vital.
One of the biggest misconceptions people have about ESSENTIALISM after reading it is that it isn’t for them. They believe it only works if you are a CEO or hold a privileged position.
In reality, I wrote ESSENTIALISM for those who feel disempowered. For the person who has come to believe that if they are asked to do something that the only answer they can give is the polite yes, and the only alternative they can think of is the rude no.
ESSENTIALISM offers a third alternative. The idea that you can learn to negotiate. You can pause to ask a question instead of immediately jumping in with a

“Essentialism is not about how to get more things done; it’s about how to get the right things done. It doesn’t mean just doing less for the sake of less either. It is about making the wisest possible investment of your time and energy in order to operate at our highest point of contribution by doing only what is essential.”
