I'm also currently rereading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Also have started The Glass Magician by Charlie Holmberg and Six Memos for the New Millennium by Italo Calvino. I'm finishing up one of the Campion stories by Margery Allingham. I keep meaning to finish Changes by Jim Butcher, but it's a hard one as I know it's going to be bad and dark and horrible things are going to happen. Maybe I'll finish it this summer. (less)

Me, Angela and Rose at the LA Times Book Fair in 2014 at USC.

A good friend, one of my favorite people, in fact, died this morning. I am going to miss Angela Consolo Mankiewicz.

If you were to ask me to describe her, I’d say she was beautiful, honest, intelligent, kind, thoughtful, and wise. She loved poetry and good stories. She loved learning. She loved classical music and playing the piano. S...

Daemons Are Forever by Simon R. Green
“Only people like us still kept a watchful eye on Lud’s Drum, because dimensional barriers in and around the town had been dangerously weak ever since Timothy Leary dropped a heroic dose of LSD and peyote there and tried to perform a remote exorcism on the Pentagon.”
Simon R. Green
Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich
“With ravens, the line between interpretation and fact is commonly a thin one, but as Mark Pavelka, who studied ravens for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, said, “With other animals you can usually throw out 90 percent of the stories you hear about them as exaggerations. With ravens, it’s the opposite. No matter how strange or amazing the story, chances are pretty good that at least some raven somewhere actually did that.” That is because ravens are individuals. Ants aren’t.”

Charles Bukowski
“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”
Charles Bukowski, Factotum

Charles Bukowski
“You have to die a few times before you can really
live.”
Charles Bukowski, The People Look Like Flowers at Last

Oprah Winfrey
“When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.
~Maya Angelou
Remember this because it will happen many times in your life. When people show you who they are the first time believe them. Not the 29th. time. When a man doesn't call you back the first time, when you are mistreated the first time, when someone shows you lack of integrity or dishonesty the first time, know that this will be followed many many other times, that will some point in life come back to haunt or hurt you. Live your life in truth. Don't pretend to be someone you're not. You will survive anything if you live your life from the point of view of truth.”
Oprah Winfrey

Guy de Maupassant
“Everything is false, everything is possible, everything is doubtful.”
Guy de Maupassant, Complete Works

George Gordon Byron
“And thus the heart will break, yet brokenly live on.”
George Gordon Byron
