Tom’s eyes briefly closed before they flitted over Skyler, aware of her pain as she stood wringing her hands, her large eyes aghast at the scene unfolding before her, his head once more turning to Mike, lips curled back. “I love her. And just so you know… I was on my way here before my detective informed me that somebody else was here. To you she is just one more notch on your bedpost… but not to me… I came to do the right thing Mike. So why don’t you get the hell out and forget all about us? We are going to get remarried and I will bring up this baby… as my child”

Mike shook his head, his body rigid with the anger within him, his hands balled, ready for a fight. “Like hell Tom. This is my child and I will be the one marrying Skyler… so that we can bring OUR child up together”

With a growl of fury Tom grabbed Mike by the lapels of his jacket, Skyler finally finding the ability to move, her feet carrying her forward as she pushed at the two men, her head shaking violently as she screamed at them, “STOP IT! STOP IT! I AM PREGNANT… I DO NOT NEED THIS!”

Her words, like cold water, saw both men fall back, their eyes resting on her, two sets of eyes full of concern as she stared from one to the other, her small body shaking, eyes brimming with tears. Tom groaned and Mike exhaled a small sigh, both men instantly becoming apologetic. “Skyler…” “Babe” each stepping towards her as she threw her hands up to ward them off, her features full of fierce warning as she glared at them both.

“How dare you come in here expecting me to fall in with your plans like a good girl”, her head turning to Tom. “I am not marrying you Tom… We tried and it did not work. What happened was a sign that our marriage was not strong enough… I am not making the same mistake again… It is over” Ignoring the pain in his eyes, she turned to Mike, anger rising within her seeing the small smirk which touched his lips as he briefly looked over at Tom. “And as for you… I do not even know you… So do not expect me to marry you either”, the smile dropping instantly from his lips, her look switching from one to the other. “This is not the dark ages!”, her hands flying up in a ‘so what’ gesture. “So I’m pregnant… I know it will be rough… but I can bring this baby up by myself… I don’t need either of you”

Pirate’s Revenge [Pt 17]

Chapter Seventeen

The coach moving once more saw Jim sit forward, a fierce scowl on his features.  He did not like this.  There was something off.  His six months as a pirate had honed a sense within him which warned of impending trouble, the captain having taught him to trust his instincts.  About to demand the driver stop, the carriage came to a halt.  Looking out of the window, he could tell that they were in a blind spot hidden from both the house and the previously mentioned stables, a group of trees offering perfect cover from prying eyes.

Silently unsheathing his sword, his senses on high alert, he adopted a pose ready for attack.  The carriage door was wrenched open, a man jumping into the cramped area.  He cried out in surprise as Jim pounced, pushing him onto the opposite seat, the sword held against his throat.  “Who are you? What is going on?”, Jim’s words bitten out with barely contained anger, his stomach full of fear at what might even at that moment be happening to Elizabeth.  The two had walked straight into a trap, he knew it with everything in him.

The other man stared back at him in stunned shock, his eyes quickly rising to Jim’s, his words hardly audible as he froze on the spot.  “I am a friend.  Please – there is not much time.  We need to get you to safety” Still leaning on the stranger, Jim’s features were full of the determination he felt, “You better start talking then…Where is my mistress?”

He was surprised to see almost a hint of approval in the other man’s eyes as his words rushed out in a raspy breath, “Lord Archer arrived a day ago.  Took control of the estate with some henchmen.  We had to come up with a plan to save you”, his hands now slowly rising to gently push Jim’s arm holding the sword aside, his eyes pleading “Please, there is not much time – we have to hurry”

Moving back, still holding his sword, Jim eyed the man suspiciously.  “Why did you not warn us when we pulled up?” Rubbing his neck, the man – Jim now seeing that he must have been about twice his age – shook his head.  “They would have killed you instantly.  My name is Arthur, I am…was…Lord Hunter’s stable manager”, his eyes growing warmer, “A good man is Lord Hunter”, Jim nodding in agreement.  “We received word today you were coming, but we had no time to intercept you before you arrived so we had to come up with another way of saving the Master’s wife…and anybody travelling with her.  We have a plan…but you must trust me”

Jim frowned, staring at the man, seeing only real concern and trepidation in his eyes.  Nodding, he once more sheathed his sword.  “OK…What now?”, the relief in the other man’s features instant.  “We get off here.  The driver is being bribed as we talk…He will be paid if he confirms that Lady Hunter travelled alone…which should ensure they are not looking for you…But we must go…now”

With that, the man once more opened the door of the carriage, leaping from it, Jim following.  Another man stood waiting, his head nodding to Arthur to indicate his role had been carried out, the carriage once more continuing on its journey to the stables.  From the dense undergrowth the newcomer pulled on breeches and a coat, those befitting a stable hand, and indicated that Jim change while Arthur continued to talk, filling him in on their plan.

When dressed, the three trudged through the undergrowth, taking the shortcut to the stables.  As they reached the large bustling area, the three looked at each other, their mouths flattened seeing the coach driver stood, two heavily armed men towering imposingly over him.  Inching as close as they dared, they listened as the men again demanded to know where the man had dropped off the captain, the two snarling at the timid man who had caught sight of the three, his furtive look once more snapping back to the two guards as the larger man moved in so close to him that he was only inches from the driver’s face.  “You better tell us where you dropped him…or it will go bad for you”

The driver pulled a length of cloth from his pocket, wiping his sweating brow, his voice shaky, “I told you already.  She travelled alone.  There was a man, ‘er husband she said, he paid me but never came with ‘er.  She seemed real upset, but he said he would come soon…that’s all…I swear”.  He gave a nervous half-laugh.  “Why would I lie to you gents?…Nothing in it for me.  He never came with ‘er…It’s the truth”

The three men held their breath, all exhaling a collective sigh of relief as the guards stepped back, nodding at the driver, “Get out of here”, the small man not arguing as he scuttled back up onto the coach, obviously preferring to find some place else to feed and water his horses as he quickly turned the carriage and disappeared.

As the two men moved in their direction, Arthur threw a broom to Jim hissing, “Look busy”, making the younger boy begin vigorously sweep the remnants of hay which lay scatter around.  With his back to the men he moved slightly from Arthur and his other rescuer who had been introduced as John, keeping his head down.

Coming level to Arthur the two paused, the larger, more brutal man pushing the stable manager against the closest door, Jim feeling every hair on his body bristle, having to fight the urge to leap in and defend the man.  Arthur however, seemed to take the abuse in his stride as he regained his balance, his tone dripping with disdain.  “Does that make you feel better?  I’m guessing you don’t get much affection, probably not even from your own mother…But not surprising with that ugly mug of yours”  Jim could hardly believe the man’s words, holding down the chuckle hearing the harsh expletive from the man his words were directed at, the man’s hands fisting threateningly.

Before he could hit Arthur, the other stepped in between the two, his eyes narrowing, “Enough! Lord Archer will have you whipped if you put the stable manager out of commission”, turning to look at Arthur as he snarled, “Otherwise, I would let him pound you”  Arthur gave a half-laugh, his eyes hardening, “That’s it boys…get on with you…Like you said LORD Archer would not be happy if his dumb pet bulldogs injure the workers…Not like either of you know how to do an honest day’s work…Nor will he be happy when he finds out that you are stopping my lads working too”, his eyes sweeping to the stable, all activity having ceased as everybody gawked at the drama unfolding.

Stepping back, the second man turned, his loud gruff voice filling the air, “Get on with your work!”, everybody instantly returning to their chores.  Once more turning to Arthur who was straightening his shirt, his eyes narrowed, “I’ll be watching you” Arthur giving him a small salute, “Good for you mate…Might do you some good to watch a real man work”  This time ,it was the turn of the first man to step in as the second lunged at him.  “No…we’ll get him later”, his eyes landing on Arthur, “You’ll get yours …mate”, the two men moving quickly out of the stable area.

Dropping the broom, Jim ran to Arthur, his eyes full of both concern and respect.  “You like baiting bears?”, his disbelieving question bringing a laugh to the older man who slapped his shoulder, “Nope.  But I wanted them out of here as fast as possible young Jim lad.  One thing about a bully.  They never stick around when called out”, a grimace crossing his kindly features, “Though I have a feeling that I might have to take a bodyguard with me wherever I go from now on”, laughing seeing the concerned look on Jim’s face.  “They won’t be here long enough Jim…Archer has them here because he thought Lord Hunter was going to be here”, the man lifting his chin proudly, “It would take a lot of their kind to bring him down though”  Jim nodded, a smile filtering onto his face,  “Yeah…the captain would not go down easy”

Placing a supportive hand on his shoulder Arthur and John moved from the stables to the agreed venue for part two of the plan.  As they walked, Jim told them of how the captain had saved his life, the two looking at each other with worried eyes, hearing of how the man they had known as Lord Hunter had taken to the high seas.  Shaking his head Jim paused, his eyes serious, “I know I never knew him when he was a Lord…but the reason he is so good at being a captain is because he has control and discipline.  I never said it to Lady Hunter…but I always thought he had some other reason for being there…A man like him could do much better for himself”, his eyes looking beseechingly at the other two.  “Don’t lose faith in him.  He loves Miss Elizabeth”, Jim blushing as he corrected himself, “I mean Lady Hunter and it tore him apart to not join us.  Whatever it is he is waiting for…I think it’s happening now”, his eyes flashing proudly.  “I just know that he will prove to be the man we all know him to be”

Arthur and John regarded Jim for a few seconds before both smiled widely, nodding their heads “Well I for one am prepared to give him that”, Arthur spoke softly.  “Aye and me too”, responded John, the three moving together to the rendezvous point.

Pirate’s Revenge [PT 16]

Chapter Sixteen

Elizabeth sat back in the plush seat, holding down the tears, her features not able to hide the devastation of their parting.  His words were meant to instill confidence, but even she could see the sadness in his eyes, knowing that whatever he was doing, he was in grave danger.

Across from her Jim was also silent, his look constantly falling to her, concern deep in his eyes, before finally he leant forward, “Miss”  Her head spun round  to face him, dragging a smile to her lips, “Yes Jim?”, the younger man giving her a fleeting return one before his features became more solemn.  “I know the captain.  He is the bravest, cleverest man it has ever been my fortune to meet.  If anybody can keep his promise, it is the captain”

She gave another smile, nodding, “Yes…if anybody can”, her eyes once more returning to stare out of the window, her look haunted as she prayed silently, ‘Please return him me…please’

It took them three days to reach the Hunter estate.  Each night the coach would pull into the more secure and respectful coach houses, Elizabeth treated with the respect due her station.  Jim had taken his role as her protector to heart, ensuring that the establishments were secure before allowing her to exit the carriage,  she smiling at the way the young boy had grown up, Alex’s faith in him seeming to have made him grow inches in height.

Finally late on the third day, the carriage passed through the huge gates of the estate which she was now Lady of.   Trepidation sat deep in her stomach.  Being so close to her father, and given the way she had become Lady of the Hunter estate, filled her with concern.  Her father was not known for taking humiliation well, she worried what he might do.

As the coach came to a halt, an older man appeared, his uniform that of a butler, his hurried steps bringing him to the door of the carriage before even Jim could open it.  Frowning, she saw as the man halted the young boy’s progress, his head bowing to her.

“Madam.  Word was sent of your impending arrival.  The staff awaits your inspection.  We are all delighted to welcome you to your new home”,  his words spoken in a raised voice, Elizabeth giving Jim a confused look, seeing as his brows were also drawn together.  About to speak, the kindly looking man’s eyes fell on Jim, his voice lowering.  “If the young gentleman would follow the coach to the stables, the head keeper and head stable keeper would like to meet with him.  Lord Hunter asked that he take control of the running of the outside of the estate till his return”

Elizabeth could see the way Jim bristled, not prepared to leave her side, her look once more falling onto the man, his eyes fixed on her, an almost pleading light deep within.  Something was wrong…Very wrong.  Dropping her hand to Jim’s arm, the boy half out of his seat, she gave him an reassuring smile, “Do as he says Jim.  When you have introduced yourself, please come and find me”

Opening his mouth to argue, Jim sat back, seeing the determination on her lovely features.  “Yes Miss”, he finally managed, Elizabeth seeing the uncertainty in his eyes as the door of the coach was opened by the elderly butler, waves of relief emanating from the man.

As the coach moved off to the stables, the butler introduced himself as William Bennet ,her look once more flying to him, the name familiar. “Mr Bennet…I do not understand.  My husband talked of you…He led me to believe that you ran the household…Not…”, her words left hanging as she became aware how inappropriate it was to bring such attention to his station.  William Bennet however, gave her a genuinely warm smile “The Master talked of me Madam?” she seeing pride light the depths of his eyes as she nodded ,“Yes…he spoke most highly of you”

The large ornate door to the large country house was opened by another servant, Elizabeth giving him a smile, again seeing the discomfort in the man’s face, a prickling unease filling her.  Stepping over the threshold, she hardly had time to once more admire the elegance of the luxurious entrance, she having always loved the building on the few occasions her father had brought her on business, when the doors behind her slammed shut.  Elizabeth jumped, her hands flying to stifle the scream as five armed men surrounded her, her look flying to William’s.  “What is the meaning of this?”, her voice quivering despite trying to appear unafraid.

The older man moved back, his features haunted as his eyes flicked to the top of the stairs.  “I am sorry Madam…So sorry”  Turning, Elizabeth could only stare as her father moved down the elegant stairway towards her, fury in his eyes.  Standing her ground, she fisted her hands by her side, eyes taking in the men around her, all armed and obviously dangerous.

“What is the meaning of this father?”  The cold man continued towards her, Elizabeth saying confidently, “We have an agreement, the papers are filed…I am now the new mistress of the Hunter estate”

Lord Palmer finally came to a halt beside her, his cruel eyes blazing with fury.  “Where is he Elizabeth?  Where is the scoundrel who will be hanging by his neck by the end of this day?”  Elizabeth stumbled back, fear slamming into her.  “Y…You can’t do that…He is Lord of this estate…He always was”

Shaking his head, her father looked scornfully at his daughter.  “I have spoken to the magistrate, explained what happened.  Explained that we were taken hostage and under threat of death forced to sign away this land.  That you were forced into a marriage you did not agree to.  The magistrate has agreed to an annulment for you and to ensure that justice is served on the pirate”, the last word almost spat out.

Elizabeth groaned, her eyes growing wider as she shook her head.  “No…no you can’t”, her father moving even closer to her, his words now for her ears only.  “However, I may spare his life Elizabeth…That is up to you” Looking into the dark eyes of the man she had called father she whimpered softly, “What is it you want?”  A sneer sat on his lips, “I will spare him on condition that you reveal to me where his money is…And that you agree to once more marry Lord Archer”

She stumbled back, her head shaking, a pained groan escaping her lips, her head shaking furiously. “No…never.  I will never marry that man, and I will deny everything you say.  I will not say that I married him against my will” As she defied him, her chin came up, courage once more filling her, her eyes flashing back at him.  “He is not here.  He did not join me, he had other things to attend to”, for the first time feeling relief that he was indeed not with her.  “By law, no matter what, I am his wife, and as his wife I am the rightful owner of the Hunter Estate in his stead.  I want you and your men gone.  Do not believe father that I will give credence to your lies.  I will tell the magistrate everything.  I will inform him that I married Alex Hunter willingly”, her eyes narrowing in warning, “Also how you stole this estate from him in the first place”

She cried out in pain as her father’s hand grabbed her arm, his fingers digging deep into her soft skin, eyes flashing angrily.  “Think very carefully what you say Elizabeth.  Look around you.  Right now nobody would miss you if you were to disappear…I could even blame your death on him… I am giving you a chance.  You would be well advised to take it”

Standing tall, she bit down the small scream which rose to her throat, once more fixing her eyes on her father, her features calmer.  “No.  If you want to kill me then do so.  But when he returns, Lord Hunter will make you pay”, her lips curling in a snarl, “And this time he will show you no mercy”

With a growl, Lord Palmer pulled her towards the stairs, pushing her into the hold of one of the guards, rage emanating from him in waves.  “Take her upstairs and lock her in a room”, his look once more resting on her.  “Perhaps after a night to consider my words you will be more amenable to making the better choice”

Glaring mutinously back, Elizabeth was unceremoniously dragged up the stairs, her one answer, “Never”, making the other men below snicker, the sound silenced as her father fixed them with a deadly stare, his voice rising.  “Well…Search the estate…If he caught wind of our plan he may still be here.  I WANT THAT MAN FOUND!”

As she was hauled along the upper landing, only just managing to stay on her feet, her thoughts turned to Jim.  Dear Lord.  If they found the young man they would kill him, fear thudding deeply into her.  Reaching the door of a small room, she was flung inside, the man looking at her with no attempt to hide his lustful interest.  Shutting the door he moved closer to her,  an evil laugh leaving him.  “Seems to me Miss that your daddy doesn’t much like you right now”, his brutal features breaking into a smile, Elizabeth’s stomach dropping with the realisation of what he intended.  Running to the opposite side of the room, her hand rose to ward him away, her voice shaking, “Get away from me.  Even my father would not allow scum like you to touch me”

She could see the anger in the man’s face as he stepped closer, his desire for her outweighing his fear of the man she was talking of.  “Really…well let’s find out shall we?”  As he stalked towards her, the door once more opened, the guard stopping as he turned to see the older butler once more stood there.  “Get out!”, he cried, William shaking his head, his tone brooking no argument .  “Lord Palmer asked that you see him right now”

The guard once more looked at Elizabeth, frustration filling his features, before he stood back, a grumbled curse leaving him.  “I guess you ain’t going anywhere”, this thought bringing a smile to his mouth as he pushed the butler once more out of the room, the sound of the door being locked making Elizabeth slowly slide to the ground, her arms wrapping around her legs as her whole body shook.

Pirate’s Revenge (Pt 15)

Chapter Fifteen

It had not taken them long to get ready, both almost giddy with happiness, laughing often as they bumped into each other.  “I am delighted Lady Hunter that your new bedroom will be much bigger”, Elizabeth giving a delighted shriek as he grabbed her by the waist hauling her to him, his mouth descending to take hers, before ruefully releasing her again, “Although there are most certainly benefits to having a small one…You are never far from me”

Dressed, he blew her a kiss, slipping out of the door to talk with Jim.  Elizabeth moved around the room, the large smile on her face radiating her joy as she hummed a tune.  How had her life turned so dramatically?  From the despondent knowledge of being sold to a man who would abuse her in the most horrendous way to finding herself deeply madly in love.  Truly there was a guiding force looking out for her.

Leaving his personal room Alex whistled, lightness filling him for the first time in many years.  Finally he would not only have his land back, but the woman he was destined to be with.  He loved Elizabeth, her blue eyes, the colour of the most wondrous lagoons promising him the life he longed for.  Her sweet nature, ability to love, forgive, strength and courage had taken his breath away.  He would be the best husband in the world to her, devoting his life to her happiness.

Finally on deck, his eyes scanned the area for Jim.  Where was the boy?  It was unlike him not to be at his post.  His eyes rested on the familiar shirt of his young cabin boy, a scowl lighting his handsome forehead.  Jim was not alone.  The other pirate, and he was sure that it was a pirate, was talking intently to the young boy.  Jim seemed uncomfortable, his stance rigid, Alex instinctively knowing that the newcomer was trouble.

Moving forward, he unsheathed his sword, holding it in his hand as he strode across the deck.  When he was close enough the two turned, the other man’s eyes black, dead, Alex recognising a killer when he saw one, definitely trouble.  Coming to a halt close to the two, he pulled himself to his full intimidating height, his look falling on Jim, his voice a low commanding growl.  “Go below.  Check on the prisoner”

Nodding, relief clear in his young face, Jim turned and scurried towards the door, leaving the two together.  Alex now turned his attention on the unknown man, his scowl fierce.  “Who are you and why do you dare board my ship uninvited?”

The other pirate seemed to pause, his cocky look wiped from his face at the barely contained fury of the man before him.  While he was a big muscular man even he could tell the captain would be no easy man to take on in a fight, his stance sure, his intelligent eyes drilling into his.  Clearing his throat he pulled a letter from inside his tunic extending his arm to the captain.  “Sorry captain.  There was nobody to let me on…so just let meself on.  I have an important message from you from Red Beard”

Alex felt his stomach drop at the mention of the notorious pirate captain, his hand snatching the letter from the other man before directing him to sit a little way from him, not taking any chances the man might not try a sneak attack.  When the pirate, with a scowl complied, he turned his attention to the envelope, tearing it open, the wax seal that of the scourge of the seas.  Quickly his eyes scanned the words, each only adding to the dread deep within.

Finally he looked back at the messenger, his features grim.  “Go into town and return in two hours.  I will have an answer for you then” The other pirate stared back in disbelief.  “Why do you need to think about this?  This is a great opportunity for…”, the rest of his sentence lost as Alex strode right into his personal space, a snarl pulling his lips back .  “Who do you think you are to tell ME what to do?  You will do as I tell you and not dare question me again.  Do you understand?”

The pirate cringed at the ferocity on the other man’s face, before wordlessly turning and almost running down the gangplank.

As the other man disappeared, Alex seemed to deflate, his hand steadying himself against the rail.  Why now?  Why when so much happiness was in his grasp?  Reading the letter once more, he groaned.  He and his ship had been invited to join Red Beard.  As a pirate this was a huge opportunity, the wealth that was offered one no captain would turn down.  Being in the midst of Red Beard’s armada was something he had worked for since boarding the ship.  Could he walk away now?  So much depended on his joining them.

Slamming his hand against the wood he felt pain flood deep within him.  It was not fair…not right.  He had everything his heart desired.  Nobody could expect him to do any more than he already had.  Let somebody else lead the pirates there.  His heart screamed at him to leave, even as his head told him that only he could do what needed to be done.  Scrubbing his hand over his face, he turned to move back to the lower decks, the spring that had earlier been in his step gone as he dragged his feet forward.

Opening the door to his cabin, he found an excited Elizabeth talking animatedly to the young cabin boy, his eyes wide with wonder.  Turning, Jim stood, his face split by a huge grin.  “Thank you Captain…You will not be sorry…I will be your most faithful servant”  Behind him Elizabeth stood, the happiness in her features slipping away seeing the strained look on Alex’s face, her voice becoming wary.  “Who was the other man Alex?  Jim said he was looking for you…Said it was urgent…Is everything OK?”

Looking at her, he could not hide the despair in his eyes, she briskly moving to him, grasping his hand as she looked up at him, her eyes pools of worry.  “What is it?…What happened?”, the tremor in her voice full of fear.

Lifting his hand’s he cupped her cheeks, his fingers gently stoking her cheek before dropping to kiss her lips so tenderly.  Taking a deep breath, their eyes locked as he dropped his forehead to hers.  “Something has come up.  Something I have worked towards for so long.  Something I have to see through Elizabeth.  So many depend on me”

He heard the whimper from her, the pained words rising to her lips as he once more angled her head and kissed her, swallowing them before they left her mouth.  He could feel tears slide down her cheeks; each one tearing at his heart before pulling back slightly, his intent look fixed on her.  “A man is only as good as his word Elizabeth.  I have given my word and I must see this through.  But I have also given my word to you before witnesses and God that we will be a family…and I will keep that.  I will return for you my wife… and I will claim my rightful place by your side”

Elizabeth’s hands rose to grasp his, fear in her voice as she whispered, “Please Alex…Come with us…Whatever you promised you are in danger…I can feel it…Do not lie to me”

Closing his eyes he wanted to tell her that everything would be fine, that he was in no danger, but he could not lie to her, to this wonderful woman.  Instead he stepped back, his eyes moving to Jim, whose large smile had slipped from his face, his skin paling.  “Jim.  I want you to take Lady Hunter back to the Hunter estate.  I want you to look after her, keep her safe”, his voice softening, “Can you do that for me?”

Shaking himself, the young boy stood taller, his expression serious as he nodded.  “Aye captain.  I will guard m’lady to my last breath”  Smiling, Alex stepped closer, his hand resting on the boy’s shoulder. “Thank you…I can ask no more than that”  He unbuckled one of his swords proffering it to the young man.  “Take this”  Jim swallowed as he took the item, buckling it around his own waist, the belt resting lower on his slimmer frame.  Elizabeth watched, seeing as the young man stood taller, prouder, nodding at the captain he admired so much.

Once more turning to her, he took her hand.  “I will accompany you into town and procure transportation for you…also provide you with documentation which will enable you to gain access to funds you will need” As she once more opened her mouth to argue, his finger gently placed itself on her lips.  “Please trust I know what I am doing Lizzie”

Her mouth snapped closed, her shoulders drooping as she nodded softly, defeat in every word “I will wait for you…For however long it takes”, her eyes ardent with her love for him.

Alex felt the lump in his throat as he swallowed down the emotions warring deep within him.  “Come…time is of the essence.  I must know that you are both safely away”  Taking a deep breath, the three moved from the ship, careful not to encounter any of the crew.

Alex hired a coach and driver, stowing the trunk he and Jim carried between them on the roof but only after grilling the man until he was sure that he was an honourable and trustworthy person.  After leaving them for half an hour, Jim standing guard over Elizabeth, she surprised how determined he seemed to be in his new role as her guardian.  When he returned he carried with him a pouch full of gold, Elizabeth gasping as her eyes met his, “This is a king’s ransom”  His lips quirked as he made her conceal it in her clothing.  “No king was ransomed for this money my love…I promise you that”, his eyes now full of humour, the sadness still tingeing the outline of his dark eyes.  He also gave her a letter.  “Take this to my accountant and lawyers…They will do the rest”

Finally they had no more reason to stay, Alex grabbing her and kissing her with an intensity which made her head spin as she clung to him.  Both knew that it might be the last time either saw the other, both praying that it would not be, but both preparing themselves.  Helping her into the comfortable coach he gave Jim a look which said far more than words ever could.  He was trusting him with the most important thing in his life, the young man nodding in understanding.

As the carriage moved from him Alex stood watching, his eyes never wavering from it until it disappeared between the many streets in the closed-in squalid town, the sound of the hooves disappearing as they clip-clopped along the cobbled road.  Time to do what had to be done.

Pirate’s Revenge (PT 14)

Chapter Fourteen

Her eyes flew to his in surprise as he gave her a reassuring squeeze of his hand. “So you see Lord Palmer, it will benefit all of us if I am able to resume my rightful place…In case you had considered trying to turn me in”

The black anger on the other man’s face confirmed his intentions, as Lord Palmer glared at his daughter “I will see you and LORD Hunter in a few days Elizabeth”; his cold tone showing his acceptance of the situation.  Alex then handed her father a pouch full of money.  Only then did her father’s face soften, greed lighting his eyes as he assessed how much he was being given, Elizabeth shivering seeing the calculating look on him as his gaze once more slid over the man who was now her husband.  She knew that he was thinking of the gold which Alex had referred to, his generosity pointing favourably to the amount being substantial.

Finally paid off, Alex allowed the two to leave the ship.  Elizabeth noted that her father said no more to her as he and Gerard had gone in search of transportation.   Turning to thank the Minister for his service Alex also paid him handsomely, the man wishing them both well as he and the musician left.  Jim, she noted seemed to feel the need to be elsewhere and with a chuckle she turned to face her husband, finally the two of them alone.

“Now…I believe Lord Hunter that you promised satisfaction after a wedding”, her eyes impishly holding his full of fire and heat.  Pulling her into his arms once more the deep laugh sent tremors through her.  “I believe you are correct Lady Hunter”, he whispered against her hair, Elizabeth gasping hearing her new name for the first time muttering softly to herself, “Lady Hunter…Lady Hunter”  With a radiant smile she looked up at him, “I don’t think that I have ever been happier”, Alex swallowing hard at the sincerity and truth in her eyes.

Taking her hand he led her back down below deck, back to the room that the two had shared for the last three days.   Smiling, he lifted the veil from her head. “Well after tomorrow you will never need to see this room again”, she giving him a dreamy return grin, “Oh…. I have grown…fond of this room”, her eyes dancing with his as he pulled her back into his arms for a kiss, his kiss full of longing and passion.

Elizabeth fell into his embrace, a soft happy sigh escaping her as her arms wrapped around his neck, before she pulled back slightly, Alex seeing the way her eyes widened with both honesty and wariness, a questioning look in his as she seemed to gather her courage.  “Alex…There is something I need to say”, his eyebrows rising in surprise. “You can say anything to me Lizzy”, a sweet smile replacing the wariness as she nodded, swallowing nervously. “Then…I want you to know that I did not marry you because you offered me your estate…but because…because…I love you”

He stared down at her, not aware of the large smile which filled his features, before lifting a hand and cupping her cheek softly, his eyes sweeping over every perfect curve of her face.  “From the moment you walked into my office…I fell in love with you.  I tried to deceive myself…to tell myself that it was revenge…but deep down I always knew that I was madly in love with you”  His head dipped to kiss the corner of her mouth, the touch almost a whisper against her as he continued, “I never want to see you hurt or in pain again Lizzie.  I will protect you to the very last breath in my body.  I adore you”  Tears shimmered in her eyes as she locked eyes with him, the emotions so strong between them, “Oh Alex I cannot imagine life without you…I need you”

With no more words he pulled her back into him, his kiss hard, demanding, full of the promise of things to come.  Finally he stepped back slightly, his eyes dropping to look down at her.  “As beautiful as you are my wife…I think that it is time to remove this…Time to make this marriage completely legal”  Softly his fingers began to undo the fastenings of her dress.  She stood demurely as layer by layer he stripped her, the whole time his fingers caressing her body gently, while his mouth trailed blazing kisses down her neck and shoulders.  By the time she stood naked before him,  her nipples were hard beads of want, her eyes only half open as desire swamped her.  Still dressed, he knelt before her, his hands wrapping around her tiny waist pulling her stomach towards him as his tongue explored the soft contours of her belly.  Each swipe elicited another moan, goose bumps sprouting wherever his tongue left, her fingers combing gently through his hair.

When his exploring reached the apex of her legs she was unable to stop the gasp which was ripped from her mouth.  Pausing, he looked up at her, their eyes colliding, Elizabeth unable to believe how just that one look could make her knees feel weak, her whole body trembling with expectation.  His smile was both seductive and wicked, even as his mouth once more descended, his hands gently pushing her legs apart.  The feel of his tongue probing the entrance of her made Elizabeth cry out, her nails digging into his scalp as her body stiffened with the intense pleasure which shot through her.

Her reaction only spurred him on as his tongue delved deeper, the wetness seeping onto his lips evidence of her enjoyment.  With a will of its own her body writhed against him, soft meows of pleasure reaching him as he tantalized her very core with his tongue.  She was so responsive…so sensual…so his, this thought invoking a rush of pride as well as possessiveness as one hand wrapped around her to hold her bottom to him, while his other hand opened her wider, a finger sliding deep into her tight body, a groan escaping him as he felt her muscles clamp down on him.  Dear Lord, what had he done so right to deserve this woman?

With both his fingers and tongue teasing her, Alex could feel and hear the way her breath shortened, became raspy pants as she grew closer to release.  Suddenly the need to join her, experience that release with her, swamped him.  Rising, he grappled with clothing, pulling it from himself, partially aware as she helped, her trembling fingers telling of her own urgency, until finally they both stood naked, both pausing for a second as their warm flesh connected.

Both shivered.  In that one moment everything was right, everything was perfect.  His hands rose to wrap around her head as he kissed her so tenderly, words of love slipping from him as he guided her gently onto the bed.  There was no time for caresses, foreplay.  They needed each other, they needed to connect.  Rising over her, her legs parting to welcome him he surged forward, sheathing himself fully within her tight body.

Elizabeth released a long growl as he filled her.  It felt so right with him, so good, her body quivering with pleasure.  As he began to stroke deep within her, slowly to start, then faster, she clung to him, her legs entwining with his as she instinctively rose to meet him.  However, when his head dipped, his teeth nipping one engorged nipple, the precipice she balanced on so precariously shifted, the ecstasy of release swamping her in a tidal wave, her body stiffening as she cried out his name, her fingers rigidly clutching at him.

The feel of her body clamping down on his hardness, the rippling of contracting muscles all around was more than Alex could take, his orgasm crashing down on him as with one final thrust he filled her, his guttural cry joining hers as the two rode the wave of pleasure together.

Finally, he collapsed over her, his weight comforting to her.  No matter what might happen, this man was hers…This man was her husband, and she loved him.  As he finally managed to partially lift himself on arms which still trembled he held his breath, which was still coming in laboured pants, seeing the radiance on her features.  “Oh Lizzie.  You are so perfect” Her lips trembled, eyes shining with tears as she too stared back.  “If I am Alex…it is because you have made me so.  You saved me”

Dropping another kiss onto the soft plushness of her mouth he shook his head.  “No Lizzy…We saved each other”, her head nodding as she considered his words. “Yes…I think we did”, a playful smile hovering over her lips, “Which means that you must keep me now”, his lips quirking as he chuckled.  “Oh…I intend to.  I intend never letting you go again”

With that his mouth once more descended, this time to growl against the softness of her neck and shoulder, the reverberating sound sending wave upon wave through her, Elizabeth laughing as she writhed under him, the feeling both erotic and tickly.  Chuckling with her, he held her down before his actions became more gentle, more exploratory.

This time as they made love, they took their time.  Alex caressing every part of her, encouraging her to do the same, both needing to please the other.  When they finally once more came together, it had not been with the same raw, frantic need as earlier, but slower, gentler, both knowing they had their entire lives to satisfy the other.  Finally blissfully happy and exhausted the two fell asleep in each other’s arms, both with satisfied wistful smiles on their faces.  Life was good.

Waking the next morning, Elizabeth stretched against her husband, the knowledge that she was now married to the man who had crawled so deeply into her heart bringing a soft smile to her radiant features.  She was laid on her side, his arms wrapped around her, his head close to her ear.  As she moved, so too had he, his head coming closer to her ear as he nuzzled into her.  “Good morning Lady Hunter”  His words saw heat blossom deep within her as she chuckled, purring softly and stretching against him.  “Good morning Lord Hunter”, she murmured sensually, his return laugh bringing a large smile to her mouth even as he rolled her on her back to look down at her.

She could see regret deep in his eyes, hers widening in concerned surprise. “Is something wrong my love?”, his answer making her smile even deeper, “Only that we do not have time for a repeat performance, and looking like that Lizzy…it is taking every ounce of control I have not to bury myself deeply within you”

With a deep throaty laugh she lifted her head to bring their mouths softly together.  “I have all the time in the world my love”, another groan ripped from him as he shuddered beside her.  “No…no you don’t”, his eyes dancing as he moved slightly from her.  With a quizzical look she waited for an explanation as he gently pushed hair from her cheek.  “We need to leave soon Lizzie.  I want us gone before the rest of the crew sober up and return.  It would just be best if we left before then, otherwise the scene might get very ugly.  As strange as it might sound, I do not think they will take their captain abandoning the ship well”, his lips quirking as her hands flew to her mouth. “Oh Alex…I never even though…of course we must leave now”

Pushing himself to the side of the bed, he nodded approvingly.  Beautiful and smart.  She had understood the need for speed and discretion immediately, he pleased that he did not have to spend valuable time explaining the situation to her.  Rising, he reached for his clothes looking back at her, hunger once more engulfing him as she rose, her body svelte.  “We will be taking Jim with us…a pirate’s life is not one for him”

Turning, Lizzy gave him an approving smile as she nodded, “Thank you…I was going to ask…I like him”

Pirate’s Revenge (PT 13)

Chapter Thirteen

He smiled back at her, his features full of the same happiness, before he scooped her up, holding her so hard against him. “I will be the best husband to you Lizzie”, he whispered into her hair, his ardent voice full of honesty, as she held him back, the two laughing together, before they grew silent, Alex once more looking down into her wonderful face, his eyes smouldering with the need for her.  Lifting her hands, she held his cheeks, her thumbs stroking his face as she lifted her head to meet his, his moving also until their lips once more met, their kiss full of mutual passion and need.

As the two caressed each other, their movements had been slow, each exploring the other’s body.  Alex’s experienced hands moved over her, pulling from her a reaction she never in her wildest dreams thought she would be capable of.  Her body felt no shame or shyness with this man who was truly to be her chosen husband, the man she loved.  In turn she copied his actions, feeling empowered as he groaned and shuddered under her naive touches, spurring her on to be more and more daring, her mouth moving over his body as he directed her.

Finally however, he moved over her, poising between her legs as she begged him to make love to her, feeling as he thrust so hard within her sending Elizabeth straight into orgasm, her whole body quivering as she made small animal noises, her mouth panting with the intensity of the sensations ripping through her.  She was only partially aware as with a few more thrusts he joined her, his fingers curling around hers as he held her arms over her head, both their bodies twitching with the after-effects, both panting and catching their breaths as their mouths frantically sought the other, until finally they stilled, their bodies cooling from the sweat that drenched them both.

She felt as he collapsed, completely spent, over her, the weight of him feeling so reassuring to her, as she smiled serenely, holding him tightly to her.  “My God Lizzie”, he whispered, “No other woman has ever made me feel like this”

She chuckled softly, her humour rising once more to the fore, “Well I can promise you that no man has with me either”, hearing as he laughed, before shakily raising himself onto one arm and sliding from her to look down onto her flushed features.  He could see as her wonderful breasts rose as she fought to bring her breathing under control, aware that he too breathed heavily.

“Thank you Lizzie”, he whispered softly, pulling her in tightly against him.  Elizabeth allowed her fingers to run down his stomach in small circles, her head tucked under his chin, listening to the slow steady beating of his heart.  Her eyes fluttering closed as sleep finally took her, a happy blissful smile on her lovely features.

The next morning Elizabeth felt disappointment fill her, as once more her fingers brushed along the coarse mattress, confirming that she was alone.  Rising and pulling the bed gown on, she moved into the main living area, a large smile filling her features seeing the large item in the middle of the room.  Shaking her head, she held down the giggle which bubbled up within her.  How had she not heard him deliver it?

The chest she had brought with her containing her wedding dress now lay in the centre of the room, a small note sitting perched on the lid.  Grinning she moved over to read the words of the man who was to be her husband:

Dearest Lizzie

I cannot begin to express how honoured I am that you have agreed to be my wife.  I will endeavour to prove myself worthy of you for the rest of our days.

I found this amongst the treasures removed from your ship, and look forward to the hour that I see you wearing this as we become man and wife.

Alex

Elizabeth gave a small squeal of happiness as she held the letter to her heart, her love for the man making her glow.

The small knock on the door pulled her around, as she called out for Jim to give her a moment, instinctively knowing that Alex would not allow any other man near her before quickly returning to the bedroom to pull a blanket around herself.

As Jim entered, he paused, his eyes taking in the beautiful woman before him.  With her hair falling around her slender body and her face alive with such joy she shone, the young man blushing.  “Captain asked me to bring you water and breakfast Miss”, he stuttered out nervously, pulling his eyes away respectfully.

Elizabeth chuckled, almost dancing as she gave him one of her widest smiles.  “It is a beautiful day today, is it not Jim?”, the young man grinning back at her infectious good humour.  “That it is Miss”, he managed, putting down the water and the food precariously balanced on the tray, before moving slowly from the room shaking his head as Elizabeth wanted to check his wound.  “It is a lot better Miss…Thanks to you”, smiling as he left her once more alone.

She moved to sit at the table, relishing the fruit and meats, surprised at how hungry she felt, as she made a sizable dent in the plate.  The opening door made her look up, rising quickly to her feet as Alex appeared, Elizabeth quickly moving over to throw herself against him.

“We are getting married!”, she cried, her tone full of the happiness so clear on her face.  Alex chuckled, his head nodding against hers.  “Yes we are”, chuckling as he added, “Three years later than I planned…but definitely worth the wait”

As she laughed, pulling back from him, he pulled his hands from behind his back, Elizabeth’s hands once more flying to her mouth as a small tear filled her eyes. “You brought me flowers”  Alex smiled softly down on her.  “A woman should have flowers on her wedding day”, his tone soft, as she looked back so lovingly at him, reaching out to take the large posy.  “Thank you”, her voice husky, her lips quivering softly.  With a small groan he dropped his head to kiss her so gently.

“We will be happy Lizzy…You wait and see.  I will treat you like the Lady you are.  I will respect you and encourage you and thank God every day for having delivered to me the most wonderful woman in the world”

Nodding softly, Elizabeth was unable to talk with the emotions which ripped through her.  “When is the ceremony?”, her question making him smile.  “I have given my crew shore leave and in an hour the Minister will be coming onboard to perform the ceremony”

Giving a mischievous chuckle she nodded back.  “Good.  It will take me that long to look good”  His lips curved as his brow arched, “You could not look anything else Lady Elizabeth Palmer”, a seductive tone to his voice, before he pulled back laughing softly.  “And now I must remove myself before I do a very bad thing to a bride on the morning of her marriage”

Elizabeth grinned back, running her soft tongue along her perfect lips, her eyes promising so much.  ”Then I expect you to double your efforts after the wedding Lord Hunter”  Alex laughed back at her, “I will do my best not to disappoint your ladyship”, and with a small wink he slipped back out of the cabin.

Having washed and allowed her long hair to dry, she looked over at the dress which she had earlier pulled from the chest.  When she purchased it several months earlier, it had been with dread that she thought of the day she would wear the stunning white gown.  Now however, she was ecstatic, so looking forward to standing beside Alex and promising herself to him.  She pulled the majority of the flowers he had brought her into a bouquet, but kept some to wind into her hair, allowing it to fall around her, so unaware of just how stunning she looked.

Jim’s small knock on the door pulled her thoughts back to the present, calling for him to enter.  The young boy stopped as he entered, his voice a hushed whisper. “Oh Miss…you look …you look beautiful”,  his voice full of awe, as she gave him another of her heart-stopping smiles.  “Thank you Jim”, her tone soft before she pulled the veil over her head.  “Shall we go?”  Jim, who had been sent to accompany her nodding quickly.

On deck, Elizabeth gasped seeing as Alex had cleared an area in which he had arranged flowers, this thoughtfulness tugging at her already full heart.  The Minister stood looking at her, a large grin on his jovial features, her father and Gerard standing as witnesses.  Her eyes, however were mainly focussed on the tall man now looking at her, the breath stalling in her throat.

No longer dressed as the Captain of a pirate ship, Alex Hunter wore the suit of a man as was befitting his true place in society, the long coat and breeches fitting his physique so well.  She had thought him stunning before, but now he surpassed even this, and she felt the awareness for him fill every part of her.

From the side a violinist began to play, her eyes widening with this inclusion into the ceremony, Jim moving to stand on the other side of the Captain.  Moving slowly to join him, she ignored the cold glower of her father, his face full of contempt and seething hatred for being made to watch the wedding.   Elizabeth did not care, the realisation that she never needed to care again bringing an even wider smile to her face as she finally reached Alex, the two faced each other, both smiling.

The ceremony had been brief, the two repeating the vows as asked, until finally the Minister declared them man and wife, informing the groom that he could now kiss the bride.  With a chuckle he lifted the veil, his eyes full of warmth and laughter.  “Finally”, he murmured, Elizabeth feeling the bubble of laughter rise within her even has his head dropped and he swept her into his arms for a kiss.

Pulling back, his look continued to hold hers for several seconds, both saying so much with their eyes in the silence, before with a sigh he took her hand and turned to the group.  “Lord Palmer”, his tone more officious, “I am releasing you and Gerard to return to your Estate”

Her father’s eyes narrowed/ “And what of you and my daughter?”, the question asked with malevolence, Alex ignoring the tone as he smiled at Elizabeth.   “Lizzie and I will join you in a couple of days”, his eyes falling on Gerard.

“You should know that I sought out a lawyer this morning and in my will have left everything to my wife if anything should befall me.   I also had all of the papers we signed filed legally”, his eyes once more returning to his new father-in-law.  “Oh…and should you be considering trying anything underhand then you should be aware that includes all of my gold…which only she will know where to find”

Pirate’s Revenge (pt 12)

Chapter Twelve

He had heard stories of her mother, who had died in childbirth, those stories telling of a gentle beautiful woman often belittled by her husband, but much loved by the staff and people in the area.  With a smile he knew that she was very much her mother’s daughter, and he was glad, frowning slightly at just how pleased this knowledge made him.

As the sun started to drop beneath the horizon, Elizabeth felt instant awareness as Alex moved to stand beside her, giving Jim some orders, seeing as the young boy instantly disappeared to fill them.

Moving closer, her back cushioned by his chest, her heart began beating wildly.  “Watch this Lizzie”, he whispered softly, both of them well out of hearing distance of any of the other pirates.  She shifted her gaze to where he pointed just as the sun dipped down, the sky lighting in a blaze of colours.  She gasped loudly, her hands lifting and grasping before her heart as she stared in awe at the explosion of vibrant colour.

“It…It is beautiful”, she whispered, her eyes alive with wonder.  Alex looked down at her, seeing the way her features glowed whether from all the air, or from what she was seeing, and he held his breath, feeling strange sensations tearing at his stomach.  Turning from her and fixing his eyes on the wondrous natural show he frowned at his own feelings.  He wanted to pull her in to him to tell her that he would always look after her, these feelings so foreign to him.  For so many years he had struggled to survive, any softness beaten from him, yet in so few days he had seen something worth living for in her eyes.  While she was a way back to his old life, there was so much more to how he felt for this woman, so much that he could not understand.

With his voice more husky than he had meant it to be he spoke softly, “Land is sighted.  We should be there by early morning”  Elizabeth felt her body warm, his meaning so clear.  “I see”,  she managed, her eyes not leaving the light show ahead of her.  “And what then?”  Alex shifted slightly, an uneasiness filling him. “Tomorrow we will be married”, he stated simply, not looking at her, not wanting to see the scathing look on her face at his plans.

She however, felt only the small tingling of happiness, suddenly the thought so pleasurable to her.  Not prepared to reveal her true feelings she simply nodded dropping her head slightly so that he would not be able to see her expressive eyes.  Alex felt his hand gripping the railing tightly, guilt suddenly swamping him for forcing himself on her, but determined not only to have his estate back, but also to have her as part of the deal, his body wanting her.

Neither spoke again, both lost in their own thoughts and it was with relief when Jim once more appeared.  Bending down, Alex whispered softly into her ear that it was time for her to move back to their room.  She obediently nodded, flashing him a shy smile, her lips mouthing ‘thank you’, before she turned and moved to the stairwell with Jim.  He remained where he was looking out at sea, sighing softly as night shrouded the ship, the creaking so familiar to him now as the boards shrunk as the air became colder, the deck full of sinister shadows that danced as the ship moved with the waves.

Down below, Elizabeth found that the chores Jim had been sent to do involved preparing their room.  On the table he had laid out food, and grinning she felt ravenous after her day on deck, the sight of the bread, cheese, meat and fruit laid out making her mouth water.  Jim had also placed a bowl of water for her, which she insisted that he first allow her to use to change his dressing.

The young man sat silently, with no attempt at an argument, seeing the determination in her face, the adoring light in his eyes clear even to her.  After the dressing had been changed, he left, quickly returning with more clean water for Elizabeth, before wishing her a goodnight, the sound of the lock on the door strangely comforting to her now.

After washing and changing into the voluminous nightshirt, she ate some of the delicious morsels, not realising just how hungry the fresh air had made her as she made a significant dent in the food on the table.  Her mind went back over his words on the deck.  Tomorrow they would become man and wife, the thought filling her with strange warmth.  She could hardly believe how much her life had changed in so few days, her mind returning to how she had felt as they had boarded the ship at Plymouth.  Then her whole being was resolved to the life that was expected of her.  She had dreaded the marriage to the cruel Lord Byron and even more the expectation that he would be expected to touch her, to make love to her.  She shuddered with this thought.  At that time she had no idea what that involved, but the time with Alex confirmed to her how loathsome such contact with the old lecherous man would have been. Once more she smiled dreamily with the memories of how the pirate made love to her, how he cared for her pleasure as well as his own, and her body reacting at this as it always did.

Finally, she lifted a book and curled up on the couch to read, not even managing two pages before she drifted into a wonderful sleep, her dreams full of the man who was to be her husband, her heart so full of love for this strange enigmatic handsome man.

Many hours later, the captain moved into his stateroom, his eyes falling on the young woman curled up on the couch, so innocent and beautiful in sleep.  Smiling, he hunched down before her, his eyes examining every part of her features, gently moving a wisp of hair that had fallen over her smooth creamy skin.  Rising again he moved into the room, pulling back the blankets and sheets before returning and gently scooping her into his arms.  Elizabeth did not stir, so deep in sleep was she, and Alex smiled gently, as he moved to place her between the warm coverings.

Looking down at her he had again felt the strange sensations rip through him, the need so strong within him as he bent and gently laid a kiss on her lips.  With that she finally moved slightly, her large mouth curling into a soft smile as her tongue flicked out, sliding along her velvety lips.  Alex had to close his eyes, holding back the soft groan as his whole body fought the desire for her, before he moved out of the bedroom area.

With a tired sigh he ate the rest of the food on the table, before stripping and using the water, now cold, to wash himself, feeling fresher for it.  Finally he slipped into the bed beside her, feeling as she murmured softly, her body turning against him as she moved closer in against him in her sleep.  Wrapping his arm around her, he kissed the top of her head, feeling his eyes growing heavy as slowly he fell asleep with her in his arms.

Elizabeth woke with a start.  In her dream she had been falling, waking abruptly before the inevitable landing, her eyes moving to Alex beside her, his eyes opening at the way she had jumped beside him.  Sleepily he pulled her in harder, his mouth whispering softly to her, “Are you OK?”

Elizabeth nodded softly against him, giving a small chuckle.  “I dreamt I was falling”, she managed, her body almost naturally moving harder in against him, hearing as he laughed throatily beside her.  “Mmm, I would catch you”, his arms moving around her, one around her shoulder, the other around her belly.   Elizabeth felt the naked hardness of him, her whole body flooding with the sudden need for him.  Without fully realising, her body writhed sensually against him, before hearing the soft groan against her neck, sending tremors coursing down her spine, her body shuddering.

She felt as he moved to turn her onto her back, the two facing each other.  Wordlessly they held the other’s look, his fingers moving to first caress her cheek before his mouth descended to capture her all too willing lips.  His fingers moved to undo the fastenings on the nightshirt, slowly peeling her from the many folds of the cotton shapeless apparel.  As he pushed it from her, she moved to allow the material to more easily fall from her, feeling the small tremor once more pass through her as their naked bodies once more came together, the feel so wonderful to her.  She felt as he too had shuddered, her mouth kissing him back with an equal passion as her arms flew around his neck pulling him in harder to her, her body arching against him.

With a soft moan she felt him pull away from her, a small whimper of complaint leaving her lips seeing as he looked down at her, his breathing ragged as he watched her wonderful blue eyes flutter open with surprise and disappointment.  “Alex…”, she whispered questioningly as he lifted a finger to her lips to silence her.  “There is something I have to ask you Elizabeth Palmer”, he said, his voice so soft.  “You are right…I am no different than your father, and I have abused you in the most terrible way”

He shook his head, as she had tried to speak. “Please let me finish”, seeing as she closed her mouth once more.  “Elizabeth, I never want you to think of me as your father and I want you to make this choice on your own, not because your father has told you to…or I have threatened either of you.  If the answer is no…Then I will promise to release you”

Elizabeth bit her lip softly, her eyes full of confusion.  “All these years Lizzie I have hated your family”, his voice dropping slightly, “Even you if I’m truthful, but I didn’t see that all this time there was somebody who was suffering every bit as much as I was.  Somebody who had to live with a man who cared nothing for her gentle spirit and saw only gold to be had from her”

Realisation came on Elizabeth as she felt tears rising to her eyes, lying still and silent as he continued,  “Elizabeth Palmer, I am asking you, not demanding you, if you will be my wife.  I promise to be true to you and to do everything in my power to keep you safe and happy always”

As her hands flew to cover her mouth, his eyes looked down at her, those beautiful dark eyes so unsure. His voice now containing a small tremor “If your answer is no, then I will respect that and ensure that my estate is passed to you so that you will be finally free from your father…I will see you safe from that man”

With lips which trembled she stared back at him, her voice almost inaudible. “Y…you would do that for me?”, she asked, her voice breaking with emotion, as he nodded.  This man so sure of himself, so in control of everything around him for once looked uncertain.  His eyes were full of doubt and trepidation as she gave a small shaky smile, her eyes shining so brightly with the happiness that filled her.

“Yes…yes I will be your wife”, she half-laughed, half-cried wiping away a tear of joy from her eyes.  “I will be your wife Alex Hunter”

Pirate’s Revenge (pt 11)

Chapter Eleven

The only way I could think of to hide your beauty was to dress you as a man, to hide that wonderful figure of yours.  Jim will escort you to me later on deck, try and not shine like the star you are.

Quickly she pulled on the men’s breeches, struggling to work out how the clothes worked, having never worn trousers in her life.  Pulling on the boots, which where several sizes too big for her, causing her to have to find rags to fill out the space, she looked at her reflection.  With a grimace, she hardly recognised herself hidden beneath the swathes of shapeless fabric which were draped over her small frame and pulled in at the waist.  The hat provided hid her golden hair, and she looked like a young boy, Elizabeth not seeing how large and blue her eyes still looked, from under the brim.

After some time passed, in which she ate some more of the fruit left from the previous evening, her mind often wandered back to the way Alex held and touched her.  Each time the memory would cause a small shiver to skate down her spine, her face gentle and dreamy.  The soft tapping on the door disturbed her pleasant thoughts, Elizabeth jumping.  Nervously, the memories of the previous day slammed fear deep into her stomach as she called out, asking who was there.  Relief washed over her hearing the sound of Jim’s voice, finding herself happy to see his respectful and besotted smile as he slid demurely into the captain’s room.

The young boy looked at her in surprise seeing the way the men’s clothing swamped her.  “I nearly didn’t recognise you there miss”, he smiled, she chuckling, seeing as he moved out of the way of the door, signalling reverently for her to pass.  “I made sure that you got the cleanest ones I could find miss”, he said as she gave him a thankful grin, moving from the captain’s room, this time not at the end of a pirate’s arm.

Stepping into the sunlight, Elizabeth halted, grinning, feeling the fresh wind on her face, quickly taking a large gulp of the sea air she chuckled as the wind tried to whip the hat from her head causing her to quickly have to grab it and pull the string harder around her chin.  Hearing the small cough from behind, she having momentarily forgotten the young boy still stood on the stairs, she flashed him a large smile of apology before once more moving forward, walking further into the deck area.

As they moved, the other sailors looked over at the pair.  She could tell that they knew who she was, but none dared look at her long, many flicking nervous eyes to where the captain stood barking out orders.  Elizabeth turned to look at him too, instantly feeling the jolt of desire flooding through her seeing him stood so proudly on the higher end of the ship.  The wind whipped his short hair around his face; memories of how she had ran her fingers through the same glossy locks filled her mind.

Jim moved around the ship with her, pointing out and describing what the pirates were doing, as she listened intently.  After the tour they took up a position near the centre of the boat near the railings, Elizabeth gasping at seeing her father moving purposefully towards her.  Reaching the two, the older man pushed Jim out of the way, grabbing her unceremoniously by the arm, as he moved towards the steps leading down into the belly of the ship.

“What do you think you are doing up here?”, he hissed at her, “And dressed like that…You are a lady of the realm…not some guttersnipe pirate.  You will return back down and behave like a lady”

For the first time in her life Elizabeth did not flinch, did not meekly obey her bullying father, but instead she stood her ground, the events of the last few days causing her to pull her arm free of her cruel father. “I am getting some air…and you have no right any more to tell me what to do”

The other man stared back at her in disbelief.  “How dare you?…”, he stuttered as she cut over him “How dare I WHAT father?…How dare I demand my only daughter to sleep with a stranger to save my own life?…Or how dare I make a deal with the devil for gold”

Lord Palmer stood dumbfounded, seeing as she jerked her arm from him stepping back, her eyes accusing and angry, before pulling himself together and finally managing to blurt out, “You are my daughter Elizabeth Palmer, and you will do as I tell you”

She however, shook her head decisively.  “No…As of tomorrow evening I will be married off by you to a pirate captain, a man who you swindled father.  This…”, she waved her arms around, “All of this is your doing…Had you kept your word to him then he and I would have married long ago, and neither of us would have been on a ship heading to the despicable man you sold me to.  This is ALL your doing”, she snarled before turning abruptly on her heels and returning to the other side of the ship where Jim stood, caring little as his eyes glared after her, anger deep within at her defiance of him.

Elizabeth could feel her whole body shaking, but she could also feel the exhilaration and freedom of having finally been able to stand up to her father.  Her eyes flicked over to where she had last seen Alex, surprised to see him stood silently watching her.  A small smile played on his lips, before he had given her a small wink returning once more to his work.

That look of respect filled her with a strange calm and heat, and with a small gasp of disbelief she realised that despite having only known him for less than three days, and despite the fact that he had blackmailed her to be his mistress, she was in love.  She, Elizabeth Palmer, was deeply and madly in love with him, and she embraced the emotions, feeling so happy.  Turning back, she was not aware of how her whole features glowed with that happiness as Jim stared at her, his eyes still full of adoration.

“I think it is impossible for you not to look beautiful miss”, he blurted out, growing red at the realisation of what he just said.  Elizabeth gave a small laugh moving to sit on a barrel beside him, the two looking out into the distance, hearing the comforting slosh of water as the waves lapped against the ship as they cut through the ocean.  Seeing the young boy pull out a knife and some wood, she watched with fascination as he started to slowly whittle the wood.

Looking at him again, she was once more struck with how different he was from the other pirates.  “Jim…how did you end up on this ship?”, she asked softly, seeing as he looked up in surprise, his eyes looking back to where the captain worked.  “It was the captain miss”, he replied gently, pausing in his work.  “About six months ago when the old captain was still alive I was on board a ship that they attacked”

Elizabeth could see the look in the boy’s eyes, the light of pain as the memories of that awful day once more came to him.  “I was going to the Americas to start a new life…My parents had died and there was nothing more for me in England miss”

She had made a small noise of pity, as he gave her another small smile.  “The old captain was cruel miss.  He didn’t like to leave survivors, so he would put them back on their ships and sink them”  Elizabeth gave a small gasp, remembering how that had been one of the choices in their fate given to her by Alex.

“Anyway…the captain took one look at me…seeing as I was the youngest on the ship and there being no women folk and he asked the old captain if he could keep me as a cabin boy, that the ship needed one…and the old captain agreed”  He looked over at Elizabeth, his face serious.  “He saved my life miss, and he has been good to me ever since”

Once more she smiled, her eyes moving to look at the distant horizon, her mind once more juggling with the myriad of emotions and contradicting evidence of the man she loved so passionately.  On one hand he showed such gentleness, kindness and mercy and on the other such brutality, her mind again seeing the life leaving the pirate who tried to rape her.

“When did the old captain die?”,  she asked frowning, the realisation hitting her that until six months ago Alex had not been the captain of the pirate ship.  “’bout 2 months ago miss”, Jim answered, Elizabeth’s frown deepening with surprise as she looked back at the young boy.  “Oh….I assumed that he had been captain much longer….What happened to the last one?”

Jim gave her a small lopsided smile.  “The last captain was not as well organised as the new one.  One day he ordered some men down to a job that the captain thought was too dangerous.  He told him that and the old captain was furious…didn’t like his orders being questioned and demanded that he be whipped. But the new captain demanded a leadership challenge”

Elizabeth listened with wide eyes.  “What…what does that mean?”, she asked, although she felt sure that she already knew the answer, her fears confirmed as Jim looked more somberly at her.  “A fight to the death miss, that is how most things are decided on a pirate ship”

“Oh…oh I see” Elizabeth muttered softly.  “The last captain was a bad man miss, cruel for the sake of it and drunken too, he was not missed.  The new captain killed him so quickly you couldn’t even call it a fight, and he turned the crew around.  The whole place was filthy and discipline was gone.  We had crew killing each other in drunken fights or over gambling.  The captain put a stop to all that.  He is a hard man, but a fair one and there is not a pirate on this ship that doesn’t respect him miss”

Elizabeth nodded her head, once more peeking a look at the man they were talking about, seeing as he grabbed a rope and was lithely pulling himself up hand over hand as he moved to one of the many sails, her heart skipping seeing how the muscles on his arms rippled, the memory of those same arms holding her within them sending tremors throughout her.

Beside her, Jim leapt foreword spotting dolphins following the ship.  In his excitement he pulled her over to the rail as he animatedly told her stories of the creatures, his young eyes alight with love for the animals, his enthusiasm drawing Elizabeth in as she listened to the many stories he told of the creatures of the sea.

From the top of the mast Alex Hunter lifted his telescope, his eyes scanning the horizon for land, knowing that they were close.  With a satisfied smile he finally spotted the small telltale sign far in the distance, as he called down instructions to the navigator.

Looking down he could see the small shape of Elizabeth listening intently to Jim, who was relaying to her some story, his whole body moving as he waved his arms around his whole being into the tale.  He smiled, the memory of her standing up to her father once more filling him with satisfaction.  When Robert Palmer had grabbed her and tried to drag her back down into the belly of the ship, he had began moving to intervene, determined to have the Lord placed in chains deep inside the ship to see how he would like to be imprisoned there for a day.

However, as she pulled herself free, he had stopped, watching as the drama between father and daughter unfolded, seeing as for possibly the first time in her life Elizabeth Palmer stood up to the cruel domineering man before her.  He could see the aloof mask she wore stripped away as she threw unheard words at him.  Her features and eyes had lit with passion, and he was once more reminded of that wonderful child he had known ten years before, the child who would give her possessions to those so much less fortunate than her and he had been relieved.  He was relieved that Elizabeth Palmer truly was the child he had known and not a copy of the cruel twisted personality of her father, knowing this filling him with warmth.

Pirate’s Revenge (pt 10)

Chapter Ten

Rising, he lifted her to her feet also, before walking her to the table.   She again sat down with him, as he offered her food.  “Eat Miss Palmer, you need to keep that strength of yours up”

Elizabeth smiled, realising that she had eaten nothing since that morning, her stomach suddenly feeling very empty as the smell of the fruit and meats reached her.  As she gently nibbled on some fruit she looked over at him, her expression one of self-mockery.  Catching the look he raised an eyebrow “What is so funny Lizzy?”, he asked gently as she gave a small laugh.  “Earlier as I sat here I made a wish”, she finally admitted, looking up with a sad smile.  “I guess I should have been careful for what I wished for”, she said with a small lopsided grin.

Alex raised a questioning eyebrow.  “Oh?…And what were you wishing for?”  Looking back at him she gave a small ironic half-laugh.  “That I would be able to get some fresh air…to get out of this room for a little time” Looking down at her hands, her voice had been lower.  “Not how I expected it to happen”

Alex watched her thoughtfully for a few seconds, his face holding a more sympathetic expression “I am sorry Lizzy…It must be hard being cooped up in here for days on end” She was caught off-balance at the sincerity in his voice, her eyes finding his before once more dropping as she felt a strange sensation rip through her.  “I…I understand why I have to”, she finally managed, as he moved forward, leaning over the table, his chin resting on the palm of his hand.  “There might be a way”, he said thoughtfully, as her eyes flew up to meet his, a small hint of hope tinged with fear after what had happened earlier evident.

Slowly his eyes moved over her, talking in every detail of her perfection, her honey blonde hair pulled up to show off her long graceful neck, the nightdress hiding her perfect figure, frowning with concentration.  “You are an incredibly beautiful woman Lizzy”, he said, causing her to blush, still so unused to a man being so forward.  “Given the lesson given to my men tonight, and if we could perhaps ensure that you do not look so beautiful, there is a chance that you could spend more time on the deck”

Lizzy grinned warmly at him, her mouth wide her eyes shining with hope, reminding him of the young girl he had known so long ago.  “Really?…Do you mean it?”, she cried, as he smiled back.  “You will of course have to have a chaperone at all times…I suggest perhaps Jim…but yes, I think it is possible”

She pulled her hands to her heart, the excitement so evident in her, the thought of finally getting out of the small cabin for some time making her grin happily, Alex unable to stop the return smile touching his own lips.  “OK Miss Palmer, it has been a busy day…and I for one would like some sleep”

Elizabeth felt her heart start to beat wildly with his mention of bed, her eyes watching as he pulled the weapon belts from around him, her eyes trying not to drink in the way his long back caused sensations to run up and down her body.  Dropping her eyes from him she frowned.  Her father would be disgusted with the way she was allowing this man to affect her, her chin rising as she tried hard to regain her composure.  However, as he once more turned and held out his hand for her she felt that composure drop away, as she placed her fingers in the palm of his hand.

Alex felt tired.  The day had been busy, and what had so nearly happened to Lizzy had shaken him more than he was prepared to admit.  Looking down on the young woman he once more admired how lovely she looked.  She was even more so as the aloof shield she seemed to have worn when she first appeared in his office seemed to have slipped from her over the past few days, and he could see in her once more the fun-loving girl he had known all those years ago.

As he gently held her small hand in his, pulling her to her feet, he saw the fire in her eyes, the way her nipples seemed to strain even against the heavy folds of the voluminous nightgown she wore.  He had intended to sleep, but he felt his own body respond to hers, the need to hold this woman suddenly swamping him as he pulled her gently into his arms.  Kissing her so tenderly, he felt her kiss him back, her arms moving around his neck as her youthful body fell harder against his.  He growled deeply, the sound spurring on the young woman as she moved so softly against him, until he held her around the waist lifting her high against himself and moving into the bedroom.

As she felt herself being carried, Elizabeth kissed Alex back, her whole body yearning to feel him make love to her.  As they reached the bed, she felt him pause, placing her gently to her feet, his mouth whispering softly against her ear.  “You don’t have to do this Lizzy…after what happened…if you are not ready”

With a small sound of pain, she pulled at his clothes, the need in her so evident. “Make love to me Alex”, she purred softly, her head dropping to allow his mouth to follow the contour of her neck as she shivered with such need.  She felt as his hands moved to her hair, pulling the pins from it to allow it to cascade around her shoulders, against his face, as he pulled her even harder to him kissing her with such intensity that she felt her legs start to weaken.  Slowly he moved her back until she felt the bed against her legs, feeling as he gently laid her over it, his fingers pulling on the strings at the neck to drag the gown from her, his eyes once more feasting on her perfect body.

“God Lizzie, you really are beautiful”, he murmured softly, her whole body alive with the need for him.  Unable to speak she felt as his mouth sought out one of her nipples, pulling it hungrily into his mouth making her cry out with surprise and pleasure.  The feel of his tongue flicking the hardness against the roof of his mouth threw her over the edge, as her fingers clawed at his clothes, pulling them from him as he helped her, until both of them lay together naked.

He continued to suckle her, taking her hand in his and guiding hers to the hardness of him, his mouth moving to her ear, making her shudder as his breath tickled the small hairs there.  “Hold me Lizzy”, his voice gentle as she wrapped her fingers around the length of him, feeling as his head fell against her shoulder, hearing the loud hiss which turned into an animal sound deep within his throat as she slid her fingers down him.

She felt his hands spreading her legs, his fingers finding the centre of her and gliding deep within her wetness as she whimpered softly.   He raised himself over her, his need for her overpowering as he pulled her hands over her head, holding her wrists securely before surging so deeply within.  Lizzy cried out with the pleasure which filled her, her back arching with him, her body moving perfectly with his, as though it was the most natural thing in the world for her to do.

Alex drove deeply within Lizzy, his movements slow to start, until she frantically begged him for more, moving harder and faster within her as she writhed beneath him, quivering with such need.  He stooped down, nipping her nipple with his teeth as she felt the torrent of pleasure swamp over her, her fingers gripping his head to her as she peaked.  Her whole body convulsed with the intensity of her orgasm, her cries filling the small space, feeling as his breathing became more ragged as he drove harder and deeper  before releasing deeply within her still rippling body, his cries joining hers.

Elizabeth felt his body fall heavily onto hers, her hands moving around him, holding him to her, so unsure why she needed to hold him at that moment.  Finally he lifted his head, his eyes looking so deeply into hers, she returning his look, no words being spoken between them.  He dropped his eyes to her mouth once more, kissing her lips gently, as she kissed him back just as tenderly.  She felt as he shifted his body, pulling her into the crook of his arm, holding her so safely within his embrace, his hand caressing her hair softly.  “I’m sorry Lizzie…I didn’t mean for this to happen tonight…I didn’t want to upset you again”

She frowned softly, her eyes looking into his.  “I wanted it too Alex”, she breathed gently, before frowning, moving to look up at him. “What do you mean again?”

He stared back at her, his face sombre. “Last night…I hurt you…I made you cry”, he finally replied, his voice soft.  A haunted look filled her eyes, before she shook her head. “You didn’t hurt me”, she said reassuringly.  Seeing the question come to his lips, she continued, “Like you said…We all do what we have to do to survive…And I expected my life to be with Lord Archer”  Her eyes could not hide the contempt at the thought “He made his desire more than obvious…and I knew that he would care little for me…for my pleasure…just…you know”

She looked embarrassed, her eyes showing the shame in them “What happened last night…how it felt…I…I never expected to ever feel that”  She looked at Alex with such sweetness and innocence in her eyes.  “I knew that no matter what my future held…I would never forget how you made me feel”, her hand rising to stroke his cheek.  “I was crying because for the first time in my life…I had experienced something so wonderful…something not even my father could take from me…I was not upset…I was happy Alex”

He looked down on her with such surprise in his eyes, completely speechless at her words, as she moved further into him; her eyes slowly closing as sleep finally overtook her, a small smile playing on her lovely lips.  As her breath deepened, her whole features relaxing in sleep he frowned deep in thought before he too succumbed to the tiredness that invaded his whole being

The next morning, Elizabeth awoke, her limbs stretching in the bed, as she sought out Alex,  feeling the small sensation of disappointment on finding him no longer there.  Her body felt stiff from their lovemaking, the memories of which caused a smile to light her lovely face, her insides feeling strangely light and warm.  Pulling the blanket around herself, she moved out to the main area of the cabin, a small frown of surprise coming to her features on seeing the pirate clothing draped over the table.  Moving forward, she picked up the note beside them and quickly read the contents, before grinning happily.

Pirate’s Revenge (Pt 9)

Chapter Nine

As the pirate lunged at Alex, the crew watching broke into jeers and cheers, egging on both men as they moved around each other.   She watched with fearful eyes, her heart beating painfully in her chest, as the captain almost seemed to play with the other man, putting on a show for his men as he easily dodged the coarse lunges of her attacker.  His movements were fast and sure as time and time again he sidestepped the man, knocking him to the ground before allowing him to get back on his feet and recover his weapon, the whole time the crowd getting noisier and noisier as they became almost frenzied with the fight.

Finally though, Alex seemed bored, his eyes briefly meeting hers, before he turned and raised his weapon, something about the deadly set of his body sending a cold shiver through her.  This time when the other man lunged, he ducked, driving his weapon deeply into the pirate’s body.

Elizabeth felt sick as the man’s features widened in a look of shock, dropping his sword as he fell to his knees, his eyes swept to her as in horror she watched the life leave his as he keeled forward onto the deck – dead.  Her legs almost buckled, the pirate holding her squeezing her arm tighter, the flash of pain bringing her around.

As the man hit the deck, the crowd as one grew silent.   All watched the captain as he moved forward kicking the man to his back and retrieving his sword, his look contemptuous.  He ran it along the man’s body, wiping the blood from its cold blade before once more sheathing the weapon.

Turning he spoke loudly.  “This is what happens to any man who dares touch my property”, he cried fiercely as the other men shifted and fidgeted, nodding and mumbling in approval as they looked at each other. “Is there any other man who would try to lay claim to her?…Who would dare touch her?”  For a few seconds he looked around the men, his look challenging and ferocious before his stance relaxed and he nodded, “Very well then”

Looking back down at the man whose blood now spilled over the wood he spoke with contempt, no trace of pity for the life he had taken.  “Now get this off my ship”, he spat out before turning to Elizabeth, his eyes so serious, cold almost.  Nodding to the pirate holding her, she was once more dragged back down to his cabin without a word spoken.

As the key again turned in the door, she moved over to the wall, slowly sliding down to the ground, her whole body shaking with everything that had happened as the shock swamped her body.  She was not even able to cry as she shook so violently.  As the door once more opened, Elizabeth held her breath with fear, her eyes staring around herself, for what she did not know.

Seeing Jim come into sight, she took a deep breath of relief, pulling herself slowly back to her feet.  “Captain said to make sure that you got some water miss”, he said, his voice almost inaudible as he looked at her with such guilt in his eyes.

“Thank you Jim”, she managed, softly moving forward.  As he turned, she saw the blood on his head and gave a small gasp her arm reaching out to stop him.

“What happened to you?”, she demanded, her eyes full of concern for the young man before her.  He looked miserably back at her.  “I’m sorry Miss”, he whispered, as in surprise she saw his eyes welling up with tears.  “It’s all my fault…My fault he got to you”

Elizabeth looked back at him, her large eyes wide and questioning.  “How?”, she asked in disbelief, seeing as he watched her miserably.  “I didn’t see him…He just hit me and grabbed the key”, he managed finally, as Elizabeth moved forward quickly. “He hit you?”

She moved behind him to look at the boy’s injury, seeing as blood still oozed gently from the wound low on his head.  Jim was embarrassed at the beautiful woman’s attention, trying to move from her.  “It’s nothing Miss…No more than I deserve”, he stuttered, as she pulled up one of the chairs demanding the young man sit on it.

To his surprise, she began tearing at the hem of her skirts as he groaned, “Please Miss…”   Her hand firm on his shoulder stopping him from rising.  “Sit”, she stated with determination as she dipped the towel he had brought into the water, starting to gently mop the blood away from the wound.  When she could finally see through the matted hair and blood she could see that it was not as bad as she first thought.  Still oozing slightly, she continued to cleanse it until the bleeding stopped, before using the cotton from her skirts to wrap around his head in a makeshift bandage, using more to create a pad against the wound itself.  When he was finally finished she stood back surveying her work, looking down at the young man seeing how he stared back at her with eyes which were adoring.

Stepping away, she allowed him to stand.  “Now Jim, do not exert yourself… And ensure you come back tomorrow and we will change that dressing” Seeing as he was about to speak she continued, “And let me not hear anymore that you were responsible…You were not…And you are lucky he did not kill you”  Jim nodded, unable to speak as he picked up the water, now bright red from his blood and with a last look at her, moved from the room.

Elizabeth gave a soft sigh, feeling stronger now.  She moved to the bedroom to look at herself in the small mirror he had there.  She groaned gently, seeing as her cheek shone, relieved to see that it was already starting to look less angry.  Taking some of the ripped material, she wet it with her tongue, softly dabbing the blood from her lip and chin, sighing again.

Hearing the soft knock on the door, she again quickly moved out into the main area once more, surprised at the sound. “Wh…who is it?”, she cried, hearing Jim’s voice again, relief flooding every part of her.

As he once more entered, he carried in his hands another bowl with fresh water, Elizabeth rushing forward to take it from him.  “Jim…I told you to take things easy”, she scolded, seeing as he smiled shyly back at her, his eyes still so adoring.  “I’m fine Miss…really”  He grinned seeing the genuine look of concern for him on her face. Putting the bowl down he flashed her a warm smile before once more leaving the cabin.

Elizabeth slowly removed the ripped dress, grimacing at the gown which was destroyed, but shuddering at how the now dead attacker had pawed at her in it.  Quickly she used the cloth to clean herself, seeing the bruises already start to show on her arm where she had been held during the fight.  The feel of the cold water helped her to feel cleaner, to take away the stench of the man who had lain over her as he tore at the dress.

Closing her eyes, she had been thankful that he did not have time to do so much more, her mind going back to the look on Alex’s face as he pulled him from her.  He had looked as though he could have killed him there and then, his voice as he held her briefly so full of concern before he had treated her so roughly.  She understood why he had, knowing that any sign of weakness before his men would have been a death sentence for them both, and she had strangely appreciated that one look of gentleness, not sure why it would mean so much to her, after all she was as he said, his property.

Once washed and her body tingling from the cold water, she pulled on the nightgown, not sure what to do now.  As she contemplated moving back to the bedroom, she heard the door opening as Alex entered.

Elizabeth stood transfixed, rooted to the spot, as he had seen her standing so still before him.  In his hand he held a tray, piled with fruit and cut meats, along with a jug of fresh water, quickly placing the tray on the table before turning to her.  He seemed almost nervous, hesitant as he fixed her with a gentle look.  “Are you OK?”, his voice soft, no hint of the anger of earlier.

With a small sob she ran into his arms, feeling as his wrapped around her, lifting her tightly as he held her to him.  “It’s Ok Lizzie…It’s over now”, he soothed gently, as one hand moved to stroke her hair.  She in turn clung to him, the tears running down her face.

“I was so scared Alex”, she breathed softly, not voicing that her fear had been that it would be him hurt, as he made small soothing noises, telling her that it was all going to be OK.  As he moved them both over to the couch, he looked deeply into her eyes.  “I had to do that Lizzie…I hope you can understand why”

She looked back into his dark eyes, her blue ones so large and bright as she smiled gently at him.  “I understood”, she replied, as he smiled down on her, pulling her against him, hugging her tightly. “Nobody will dare touch you after tonight”, he said, his voice full of conviction, before she felt his mouth shape into a smile, his voice gentle.  “Thank you for looking after Jim…that was good of you Lizzie”

She had been surprised he knew of her kindness to his cabin boy and looked back at him.  “What happened to him?”

She had not wanted to push the young boy, who seemed to feel that whatever happened had resulted in her being put at peril, the thought of it sending him into tears.

She heard Alex give a long sigh “Prentis…the man who attacked you….he waited until Jim was busy and came up behind him and hit him hard…knocked the poor boy out cold”

Elizabeth made a sound of sympathy for Jim, as he moved her within his arms so that she was laid over his knee so that he could look down on her as she looked up at him “He could have killed him…but didn’t want to take the chance that he could be recognised.  He then took the key to my quarters and …Well, you know”

She looked solemnly up at him nodding softly.  “How did you know?”, she finally asked, realising that he had come to her rescue too quickly.  “Well Jim was only out for a few minutes before he came around…He came looking for me…Poor boy could hardly stand, but he came looking for me anyway.  When I realised the key was missing… I knew that whoever had hit him was trying to get to you”

Looking up she smiled gently, “In that case I am very glad that I was able to help him…he saved me” Seeing as Alex nodded, his eyes looking haunted.  “He would have killed me after wouldn’t he?”, she asked softly, seeing as his eyes found hers, the hurt confirming her thoughts, feeling the shudder that had gone through him.  “Yes”  His hand moved to slowly stroke her still-red cheek.  “You put up a fight”, he said, as she gave a small smile.  “Well he did not wait to get my agreement”, she chuckled, hearing the laugh from him, as he pulled her closer to kiss her so tenderly on the lips, this kiss so different from the one on deck.

“Quite right lady Palmer”, he chuckled back, his eyes smiling down into hers. “One has to have standards”
