No one's ever asked me that before, so I really had to mull it over. I write across multiple genres, including kid's books, so I really had to stop and think about what all my works had in common. I would say that my ideal reader has to love people. All of my works are absolutely character-driven. I like big casts of characters, I like complex characters. I like lots of dialogue, a lot of emphasis on interaction, backstory and motivation. So some sensibilities my ideal reader would bring to the table would be a love of conversation, a love of observing individual gestures as well as group dynamics.

Another thing my work has in common is that I tend to be very sympathetic to the villains/antagonists. I feel a deep compassion for even my most evil characters because I believe they are, ultimately, tragic figures. So my ideal reader would share that compassion and maybe even believe, as I do, that bad guys are made, not born.

Finally, the thread running through all my work, including poetry, is my deep love of language. My ideal reader will notice and appreciate the care I put into crafting my sentences, in my choice of allusions and imagery.

Thanks for asking me that. It really made me take a step back and examine my work in a way I hadn't thought of before. (less)
