Ellie Philpott grew up near the East Kent coast, and some of her earliest memories are of digging for shellfish along the shoreline and sailing with her father in his dinghy. Her working life began at the BBC’s Foreign Affairs Unit, followed by a spell at book publishers, Hodder & Stoughton. She then went on to edit and write for an interior design magazine, before spending five years as Communications Manager for an international human rights agency. Her work took her all over the world, interviewing and writing articles on people suffering religious persecution. She has now returned to her Kentish roots, and spends her time writing and as a communications specialist. Her ‘leisure’ hours are spent looking after the family’s bees, ducks, ch ...more

I spend a lot of my childhood on the beaches in the area, playing in the rock pools and collecting shellfish with my brother and mother, while my dad was sailing. It is such a beautiful location, I knew it would make a wonderfully atmospheric setting for my book, Shipwrecks Happen. As far as the plot goes, I've always been interested in how people can develop and rise above difficult circumstances. I wanted to put my characters in a setting where each of them had to confront some of the things that challenged them most. As I wrote the book, I was 'surprised' to see the characters develop and found myself rooting for them!(less)

It's always a battle with myself to focus on just one novel - my head is usually crammed with ideas for other books, and new characters who introduce themselves to me, just when I'm trying to grapple with the plot of a work in progress.
So, I'm thrilled to be able to start on my next novel - the characters and storyline for this one have been hanging out with me for a couple of years now and I'm really looking forward to introducing them to the world. Monday morning will see me with a cup of tea and an empty template just waiting to be filled with words. Can't wait!(less)

My inspiration for ‘Shipwrecks Happen’

WHitstable header pic smaller

When I was a child, my father used to take us on long walks to the sea. It was quite a hike from our house and my brother and I were expected to keep up with his adult pace or risk falling far behind. There was no stopping for stragglers. Once at the beach, he’d line us kids up facing the shoreline and make us puff our little chests in and out, taking deep breaths of ‘healthy sea air’.
