One of the things I treasure about working in the world of children's books is our wonderful, generous community. The people I've met — children and their grownups, teachers and librarians, booksellers, authors and illustrators — have all enriched my life in more ways than I can say. They — you— are an inspiration, reminding me why I do what I do…

Blogging Tiny Dino

Many thanks to the bloggers who take the time to review children’s books, including Tiny Dino!

From Margie Myers-Culver, Librarian’s Quest:

With absolute conversational clarity, author Deborah Freedman takes readers into the story of a hummingbird that proves his truth . Each time Hummingbird declares he is a dinosaur, one of his friends counters with facts they believe disproves his statement. He then shows they are wrong with supporting evidence. In this manner, Deborah Freedman introduces an engaging cadence while providing information about dinosaurs, birds, and other animals...

… read by an individual or as a group read aloud, you can expect to have it read repeatedly.

And Pamela Kramer, “Nonfiction picture books to inform and entertain”:

One of the most important tasks for educators is to teach children to think critically. To think outside the box. To wonder and question. To examine what they are told and use their reasoning skills to logically consider what people are saying. It’s those skills that will enable the next generation to determine what is true and what is patently false...

The combination of narrative and informational text and the detailed illustrations in white on top of the colorful watercolors make this a book that will be cherished and used over and over again both in schools and homes .

Happy Earth Day!

The giant dinos didn’t see that asteroid coming.

We, however, have sadly seen another mass extinction coming for years, and I can’t lie—writing Tiny Dino definitely had me thinking about that.

But whether or not anyone catches that in my newest book, I mostly hope that readers also catch the joy in Tiny Dino—while learning something about about connections between creatures to their evolutionary ancestors, to each other… and to us.

Happy Earth Day, everyone!
