Want More Freedom of Speech? Try Less Government.

Below is my column in The Hill on my call for a bill that would bar federal funding of any program and grant to censor, blacklist, or target individuals or sites based on their content. It is time to get the U.S. government out of the censorship business. The column discusses the proposal in my new book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” to block any further funding for the current system of corporate, academic, and government programs targeting opposing or dissenting view...

Kamala Wants Price Controls, and It’s Not Because She Has “Good Intentions”

The Kamala Harris campaign announced today that it will present a plan to ban “price gouging” by food suppliers. In other words, the Harris campaign plans to mandate price controls.

Get ready for rising prices and shortages in meat and other groceries, because that’s where laws against “price gouging”—which are price controls—lead.

According to UPI:

Vice President Kamala Harris will propose a federal ban on corporate food and groceries price gouging when she lays out her policies in a North Car...

Javier Milei Versus the Antiwar Cause

The global political phenomenon and president of Argentina Javier Milei started his presidency in December 2023. After eight months, his performance at the domestic level, beyond some good actions, is marked by a significant number of errors for a supposed libertarian and follower of Austrian economics. Yet, when it comes to foreign policy, Milei is worse. He is a strong supporter of Washington’s imperialist narrative, that is, he is not a proponent of non-interventionism in the slightest, and h...

The Left and Right Are Two Haves of the Same Regime

“In the present case it is a little inaccurate to say I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible to any public office of trust or profit in the ‘Republic.’ But I do not repine, for I am a subject of it only by force of arms.”

H.L. Mencken

Actually, all politicians and parties fit into the same paradigm called rule, regardless of so-called rhetorical grandstanding when attempting to claim that they are differen...

Why the Feds Fear Free Speech

My mistake.  The Feds don’t fear free speech at all. The federal government fears truthful speech, clear thinking, logical deduction, and asking unapproved questions.

Just down the road, a few counties over from me, on the heels of the Scott Ritter raid on dubious pretense and with incomplete warrants, we have journalist Dimitri Simes’ home and peace of mind similarly legally assaulted.

I have yet to see mainstream news touch either the Ritter raid or the Simes raid.  And they won’t.   The first...

Evolving Theories

A recent find in Indonesia confirmed that 700,000 years ago humans stood just over three feet tall, around the same height of Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, and the late Princess Margaret, sister of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The discovery confirmed that our ancestors were not built to play pro basketball in the NBA, nor up front when competing in volleyball. These tiny types lived as late as 50,000 years ago and were even smaller than the earlier hobbits.

How we got to be human has intrigued us ...

A Council Without a Soul

If you have no spirituality, you have no soul. Let me explain why the Second Vatican Council came to have no soul. It involves going back to the Early Church and a whistle-stop tour of the history of Catholic spirituality.

Almost everyone knows about the heresy of Arianism that tore the Church apart in the fourth century. Like me, they still wonder at how almost 90 percent of the Church denied that Christ was God and at how quickly it was defeated. In the days before mass media, all the Church c...

On the Fantasy of Collapse, the Robust Nature of Modern States

The countercultural left and the countercultural right nourish two equivalent political fantasies.

The left hopes (or used to hope) for some manner of revolution, in which the oppressed classes will rise up, tear down the oppressive structures of capitalism or colonialism or privilege, and establish a new, enduring egalitarian utopia.

Many on the right, conversely, imagine an imminent political collapse. Either our post-liberal states will succumb to their internal contradictions and dissolve of...
