Carter Worthington IV is the kind of man whose schedule is laid out in fifteen minute increments, while Tiffany Breeze wouldn't know what to do with a day planner if she owned one.
Carter thinks he's happy, tucked away in a quiet Florida neighborhood, where nobody knows his alter ego is novelist Grant Gardner, and he's content to keep it that way. But when a hurricane blows Ms. Breeze into his sheltered universe, he must deal with his past, overcome his fears and decide if he's spent his life existing instead of living. Is he willing to leave the emotional safety of his orderly existence to experience the highs, knowing he'll also have to face the lows?

The Lawn Chair is in the Tree - Still
Tortuga Thursday In 2012, on the plains of Northern Arizona, two families joined forces and began the trials and tribulations of building a small family farm with nothing in the bank but love.
Sun in the morning, hail at night.I thought about tucking my sweaters away in the drawers. After all, we have bright flowers blooming out front. I got my field working jeans off the back shelf. And that's all it took. Last night we got hail, and snow and rain - all in the time span of a couple of hours. And this morning I awoke to an inch of snow on the ground.
The onions that are growing in the house look like they're really ready to be outside, but outside is not ready for them. Can't write off winter this side of the Big Chino Wash until May, no matter how anxious we are.
Sadi loves the greenhouse. The wind has been outrageous over the last few days - so strong and cold. Sadi has been antsy to go outside and play. She's been demanding it. So Momma Christie found the solution. She takes her into the greenhouse when she gathers greens and Sadi has a great time. She loves the dirt and can have a snack while she's playing.
A couple of days ago, I opened my eyes to this area again. Every time I move somewhere I'm always amazed or excited or intrigued or amused by my new surroundings. For awhile anyway. Then, after a couple of years, it becomes old news. Certain things just don't register anymore. So I tried to look again.
Sadi loves her greens.I've driven by the house with the white lawn chair in the tree so many times that I don't see it. It's been there all along. The angle is not like the placement is for sitting in the tree. Actually a case could be made that someone tipped forward and fell out. Maybe some day I'll stop and ask my neighbor why they keep their lawn chair in the tree.
Patricia Lane runs into the neighbor's fence. If you use a GPS to get to my house, it will tell you that you can get through on Patricia Lane. Only the people who live on the corner must not have wanted traffic driving by their house so they extended their fence across the street. Some day I might call Yavapai County and ask that the road be reopened.
Maybe tomorrow I'll visit the pink store.

Work Like Mad, Now Wait
MUSE MONDAY
When it comes to publishing a book through a publisher, it seems I'm either working like mad to get a deadline met or biding my time waiting. It goes something like this:
Send in the novel to see if they will accept it - wait
They accept but want revisions - work like mad to reread and revise
Send in the revisions - wait
They send back for edits - reread and work like mad
Send in the yet again revised novel - wait
Get the pre-galley - work like mad to reread again for corrections
Send back the corrections - wait
Get the final galley - work like mad to reread again for corrections
Send back the okay to go - wait to get the release date
I'm in the final waiting stage right now. With this publisher, from galley they have a year to publish the book. A YEAR! It might not necessarily take that long, but it could. Angst. So I wait. In the meantime, I previously posted the official excerpt. Thought I would share the opening paragraphs with you:
Lacy quickened her pace. The footsteps behind her did the same.As fast as her feet touched the bricks, her heart beat twice that speed. If only she could clear the narrow alley, step onto the lit sidewalk...Like a magnet, the street light pulled her forward and she lunged out of the darkness. Her hand slammed to her chest. After a hard intake of breath and a fast exhale, she cast a furtive glance over her shoulder. With her head down and the strap of her purse in a tight fist against her breast, she whirled around to cover the last block at a trot…And jarred with the collision as if she’d hit a cement wall. She careened off balance, but hands grabbed her shoulders keeping her upright.
This is the first book in my Love and Murder Series. Waiting for that release date...

Tortuga's Gone to the Dogs
Tortuga Thursday In 2012, on the plains of Northern Arizona, two families joined forces and began the trials and tribulations of building a small family farm with nothing in the bank but love.
Xena, mellow but destructiveIt's 5:00am on Tortuga Flats Farm, pitch black outside but not quiet. Dogs are howling. Not ours. This happens quite often in the early hours. Once in a while, it sounds like coyotes and may very well be, but this morning it's definitely dogs. One will start then a chorus from several houses around will join in. I'm not sure if they're greeting each other or taking the place of roosters in our area.
Everyone in this area has dogs - not A dog but dogs. We're not too fond of how some of these doggies are kept and the care they receive, or rather don't receive. We called the Humane Society on our newest neighbors last week. They hadn't been home for two days and their two dogs were alone and looked awfully thin. The woman from HS entered the property. She found water and bowls that appeared to be food dishes. The assumption was made that someone was coming around to feed and water the animals. Poor puppies don't look all that healthy.
Gabby, Xena and RustyAnother neighbor has about six dogs that are the rattiest looking pack. Supposedly, they have saved a couple of them from a worse fate than how they now live. We don't see them getting beat and they aren't starving but they seem so ignored.
We may be over judgmental considering how we care for our dogs who are part of the family. Lance and Christie have two, Xena and Gabby and we have Rusty. We make our own dog food which we've researched to confirm they're getting what they need. They sleep the night indoors. Even though we have plenty of yard space and room for them to romp and play, they get a walk nearly everyday.
Rusty, the elderXena eats things like expensive hearing aids. Gabby digs holes in the yard. Rusty is getting old and crotchety and sheds too much. But hey, none of us are perfect either. We believe if you're going to bring a pet into your life, you should treat it with respect and love. Not sure why you would want one otherwise.

Writing Mystery by JoAnne Myers
MUSE MONDAY
Please welcomeJoAnne Myers back to Muse Monday. She'll be awarding two commenters a print copy of her poetry collection “Poems About Life, Love, and Everything in Between.”
Before writing a word, take some time to jot down key story points. As you're writing, the story will want to take on a life of its own. Having a handy reference of key points will help keep your story on track and you from pulling your hair out. A list of key points is also helpful when outlining the story plot. You may very well find that the story begins to unfold as you're writing down the key points. If this happens...let it! Write down any ideas or details that come to you, they'll come in handy later. Some key points to consider are; what is the mystery? This is the underlying theme to the entire story so be as in-depth as possible (has there been a murder or a theft or a kidnapping? If so, how and where was it committed?).
Hunt for the culprit. Every good story has at least one antagonist, but what steps must the hero or heroine take to find him/her? How will the villain evade the hero? How is the mystery solved? In mystery writing there are a lot of twists and turns. Write down your initial thoughts for plot twists, red herrings to throw the readers off the trail of the true villain, and of course the final stages of how the good guy will prevail...or does he? You need to decide whether or not the hero or the villain wins in the end. Many hero’s die trying to solve their case. Many are involved in physical altercations with other characters. You must decide how many altercations, the number of characters involved, and what weapons if any are used. It is not a good idea to only engage your characters with fist fighting. Throw in some knives, chains, falling from windows, or my favorite, a poisoning, and other nasty assaults.
Every great story has well rounded characters. We read fiction because we want to be entertained and develop a connection with the characters. Outlining items such as personality traits, physical features, and quirks can help bring your characters to life; a speech impediment, or limp, or a nervous twitch.
For the Protagonist, decide the name, age, where does he/she live, does he/she have a family or pets, what is their driving goal for taking on this particular case? Is the hero a police officer, a person sworn to honesty, pride, and valor. Or is the good guy a private detective being paid to find a certain someone. Or your main character could be a parent or sibling searching for a missing loved one.
For the Antagonist, decide the name, age, where does he/she live, is there an underlying reason for being the antagonist? Perhaps this person is a career criminal. On the other hand, maybe he/she is a good person that suffered an unjust and turned to crime out of bitterness and despair.
Then you have your support characters, who are the color of the story. They provide depth to the story whether good or bad. A support character could be as simple as a loud mouth hot dog vendor standing on a street corner or as in-depth as the villain's partner in crime. In writing a mystery story, support characters can take on a life of their own with the reader, so make them interesting. Just because they are labeled support characters does not mean they are any less important than the main characters.
Next is the location of the story. When and where is the story set? These two key elements are what bring your story to life. Mystery story writing is a broad genre and could be set in any time period and in any place. When working with actual locations it is a good idea to do research on the location first. Readers want to feel as though they are there with the characters, so being able to accurately describe a location is vital. Time periods are no exception. If the story is set in 1940's New Orleans, the reader will want to see their surroundings, not just be told the story is taking place in a speakeasy or church. Be descriptive!
A mystery story is not a story without a solid well thought out plot. Some things to consider when developing the story plot: What is the driving force of the mystery? To solve a murder, or rescue a kidnap victim? What does the villain do to thwart the hero? Does the villain get his goons on the hero? Is the hero being set up by the villain and now he is being hunted by police. What other obstacles get in the way of solving the mystery?
One of the most important elements of writing a mystery story is suspense. Giving away too much too soon will bore the reader. It is best if the suspense is sprinkled throughout the story; bring the mystery to light within the first few chapters, then as the story progresses add a clue here and there without revealing the outcome until the final chapter. Do not be afraid to add a "red herring" or false clue, within the stories context. Readers love nothing better than to think they have everything figured out only to find in the end they were mistaken the entire time.
The final few chapters of the story should hold the climax of the conflict and resolution between the hero and villain, including how all of the clues scattered throughout the story cumulatively solves the mystery. A good conclusion gives the reader a sense of closure in finding out how the hero solved the mystery. Remember that not all mysteries have to be completely solved or have a "happy" ending. If you are writing a series of stories, the villain may get away at the end of story #1 with the hero using clues from story #1 to track down the villain in story #2. In mystery story writing, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Good News From Tortuga
Tortuga Thursday In 2012, on the plains of Northern Arizona, two families joined forces and began the trials and tribulations of building a small family farm with nothing in the bank but love.
All kinds of good news from Tortuga Flats Farm. If you've followed our adventure for any amount of time, you might remember our neighbors Dave and Eunice. They keep us supplied with eggs, loan their tractor gannon whenever and have adopted Sadi as a niece. She gets presents almost monthly from Aunt Eunice and Uncle Dave. Dave took a look at our broken tractor and suggested he help Lance and Frank fix it. He has a rigged station at his place for working on tractors. So the guys took it over there, got it up and gave a look. We ordered a $90 part on line and after about six hours of work, it's fixed. Just slightly less expensive than the $1000 estimate we received from the tractor mechanic.
The wood is waiting for the burn and then will be tilled into the fields.
We've been able to get a decent amount of greens all winter from the greenhouse. Greens are still growing but the greenhouse has been readied for the spring planting. Along one side, the greens will continue. Down the middle dill is
already planted and tomatoes will be planted before too long. Along the other side carrots are already in the ground. Inside our house, along each living room window, three kinds of onions have been started.
The garlic is getting tall. We planted the garlic in October of last year. It takes about ten months for garlic to mature. I tend the garlic which makes me nervous - the responsibility I feel for a good crop! It doesn't need much care until about now. I've started watering it again. We need pounds of garlic for the pickles and relish.
Sadi Belle turned one year old. We all agree, she's the best thing we've grown on Tortuga Flats Farm!

Not My Choice and I'm Happy
MUSE MONDAY
Authors love to have control over all facets of their manuscript publication. Doesn't happen. But we like to complain or think how if we could design the cover or if we could choose what's on the inside lead in page and on and on. I'm guilty on occasion.
But not this time.
I got the pre-galley for my next release, The Art of Love and Murder. Had I chosen an excerpt from the book, I might have gone with a passage about the hero and heroine - something to do with the romance plot. But my publisher was wise and chose a passage that addresses the suspense/mystery plot. And am I happy with that. Still no release date, but here's the excerpt:
Momentarily struck dumb by his eye color, she stared back. Why hadn’t she noticed until now? Although not as light as hers or her father’s, the professor’s eyes were a startling green shade.
His hand nudged her arm. “Lacy?”
She jumped. “Oh, yes.” She slipped the tissue from the half-carved wolf. Another glance at his eyes and goose bumps riddled her arms.
He lifted the wood close to his face, using both hands as if handling a delicate hummingbird. His thumb traced the neck of the creature to the juncture of where it emerged from the wood. When he brought the piece to his nose, closing his eyes and breathing deeply, Lacy wanted to turn away from the oddly erotic gesture.
He swallowed, opened his eyes and set the wolf back on the tissue. His attention shifted to the photograph of the chest. He touched the photo, a smile on his lips. “Where is the chest?”
The chest. Like he knew it, had seen it before. “I’m having it sent. You’ve seen it before?”
He didn’t move, stared out the window as if deep in thought. “I’d like to show you something, Lacy.”
“All right.” She waited, watching his profile.
He turned and stared into her face a moment. “You’re so very lovely. A creation full of life and passion, surpassing any art form.”
His hypnotic voice floated on the classical strains drifting from the living room. She couldn’t speak. Didn’t know what to say. She’d been lifted upon a pedestal of admiration. With any other man, she might consider his words a means to a sexual end. The professor’s intentions, however, were crystal. He admired her like a work of art.

The Masks of my Muses by Charmaine Pauls
MUSE MONDAY
Thank you for having me over on the blog, Brenda. My Muse Monday topic is exactly that – Muses. Like all writers, I live in an imaginary world for many hours every day. That world needs fuel to run on, and the inspiration I pump into it, in order for the words to flow out, are the people or places or objects, or even ideas, that become my Muses. Sometimes a solitary muse is enough to keep pulling the creative strings, and at other times I need a whole team.
In ‘Musing’ I go with whatever feels right for that particular story. For my futuristic erotic romance, Between Fire & Ice, my Muse was a statue of a winged fantasy figure carrying a dragon and a crystal ball, which I had bought in a village renown for magic in Brittany, France, the place where this story idea was conceived. Not only did she inspire the physical traits of the heroine, Elena, but she also kept me on the straight and narrow, from her guarding placeon my desk, whenever I veered from the path of perseverance in self-doubt, or in attacks of stage-fright, which I get before the launch of every book. This was a particularly important Muse, as finishing this story won me my first, traditional publishing contract.
For The Winemakeran unexpected Muse landed in my lap. She came in the form of a Monster High doll, and her name is Frankie Stein. The bolts through her neck, the Frankenstein-style stitches tattoos, and the one-blue-one-green eyes set the foundation for my protagonist, Zenna’s rebellion character. I had a lot of fun with Frankie. Together we explored paranormal elements that gave this sensual romance a thrill down the very elegant book spine. And then of course there was the wine… The wine became a personification of the characters in the book, and some characters adopted the attributes of interesting bouquets. Cheers, Frankie. You, and Chilean wine with sex appeal, made a great team. When I was looking for Muses for my latest drama romance, Second Best, I turned to experiences and memories that left me with a lasting impression. I paged back to the imprints of my childhood when I grew up on juvenile delinquent school grounds where my father was a teacher. The character of Molly, a troubled young woman, wasn’t born overnight. In fact, I lived with Molly for a good many years. I always had her somewhere in my mind, growing and developing into a fictional Muse that gave birth to a literary personality. Emotions born from reminiscence and real-life episodes became my Muse in creating this book. Molly’s tale was not an easy one to write. Some of the events were traumatic, but my Muse, in this case my very own psyche, gave me the insight and empathy needed to take Molly to the end of her healing journey.
As for the hot, hardened, emotionally dark hero, Mal, in Second Best, his Daimon complimented Molly’s Muse in my mind like a yin would fit to a yang. Mal has spent his two years of compulsory military service fighting in the South African Border War, and when the seasoned soldier becomes a war journalist and meets Molly, the battle becomes a fight for their souls. To feed Mal’s complex character, I had my brother, who served his military service at the dog unit in Bourke’s Luck, as inspiration. His kindred spirit taught me to never be afraid to be myself, and that ideal became the Muse that grew and pushed the boundaries of my writing to a different level. After every full stop of every last sentence, it is with much nostalgia that I bid my Muses farewell. No matter how hard I try to hold onto them, they seem to flow through my fingers into the ink of my sentences, and blend into the blank spaces between the lines. Their task being fulfilled, they dissolve into thin air, or ride off into the sunset even before the protagonist has played out that final act that will take the cast to Happily Ever After. But there is always that moment of overlapping faith, from one story to the next, when they manifest again in a different disguise.
For The Astronomer, due for release in October, I’ve used roses as Muse. The color of the week was determined by the scene I was writing. I’ve just noticed the last bunch, a blush of pink embedded in an outer layer of youthful-green petals, has wilted. It’s kind of sad. But there is a gift from a friend on my desk. It’s a box, elaborately decorated with funeral-purple flowers. Inside lives a Mexican death doll. I open her coffin, and start up my computer. What I see is no longer a skeleton in a clingy, red dress. I see the opening line of a new story materializing on the screen of my laptop.
