Hi Halls,

The Academie was born of a tiny piece of information I discovered quite by accident, that Eliza Monroe, Hortense de Beauharnais, and Caroline Bonaparte all attended the same French boarding school. And that period, when Napoleon was on his way to becoming emperor but not quite, always fascinated me. I wanted to write a story about how being in such a volatile time and place, with such strong characters, might shape a young girl's view of life.

I listened to the audiobook. It was spectacular, start to finish. I don't know what else to say. Gorgeous characters, intriguing plot, kept me guessing until the very end. I was happy to meander along the river with Setterfield.
