December 18, 2023: Homage To The Player's Handbook

A hot new item has just dropped from the incomparably brilliant Tim Hutchings, and it's . . . well, I'd better just show you.

   

If you're confused, yes, this is a page-for-page ink wash drawing of the entire AD&D Player's Handbook, in a foiled hardcover with endpapers that match the original. It's the finest coffee table book ever printed, if the goal of a coffee table book is to baffle and/or distress your houseguests.

Tim is the mind behind Thousand Year Old Vampire , A Collection of Improving Exercises , and Apollo 47 Technical Handbook . If you're into improbable roleplaying games, you should check him out.

Anyway, I just wanted to share the incredulous joy that I feel every time I look at this thing.

December 17, 2023: The Curious Countdown: Number 9 – Watch Your Step!

We're in the second installment of our "curious countdown," which means today is devoted to number 9. (For those who missed the premise, here's the backstory.)

I first discovered the Cardboard Heroes line years before I started with Steve Jackson Games. I loved to use them with my old-school dragon-y dungeon-y encounters. So Cardboard Heroes: Fantasy Set 9 - Dungeon Dangers was a great addition to my collection way back when. Although the physical editions aren't available anymore, the digital download lives on, and in my humble opinion, it's arguably even more useful and fun in that format. With the right printer, you can make a fantastic set. (I print on magazine boards, so tokens are nice and chunky.) Plus – since it's digital – it's trivial to reprint the set if some become lost or damaged. This particular file (which, I stress, is "number 9" for our countdown purposes) is applicable for pretty much any setting that needs classic creepy crawlies in its catacombs.

I might show off my own printed collection at some point, but if anyone has their own experiences with the digital versions of Cardboard Heroes, I'd love to hear about them on the forums!

December 15, 2023: Central Texas Food Bank

We at Steve Jackson Games are proud to support fantastic organizations that are making an impact on their local communities. Today we would like to feature one of our very favorites – the Central Texas Food Bank.  The Central Texas Food Bank, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with over 30 years of service, is the largest hunger-relief organization in the Central Texas region. In 2022, they succeeded in providing almost 54 million meals to the community and local organizations! Their mission is to nourish hungry people and lead the community in the fight against hunger. They fulfill their mission through three different avenues: Those in the community who are experiencing hunger, food insecurity, and food scarcity are able to visit the bank to acquire free food. The CTFB will make suggestions on ways to combine the ingredients into healthy meals and provides education on how to prepare other low-cost dishes.The CTFB additionally works with those in need to assist them in applying for an extremely important government resource: the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Those who qualify for the program, formerly called food stamps, receive an EBT card to use at grocery stores to purchase select items they will need for their family.In addition to resources provided directly at the bank itself, the CTFB is a member of Feeding America and Feeding Texas and partners with 300 charitable and government agencies in 21 Central Texas counties to ensure streamlined food distribution throughout the area.  On Giving Tuesday, we made a donation to the Central Texas Food Bank to aid in their efforts to bring healthy food to the Central Texas region and congratulate them on their amazing work!

December 14, 2023: The Curious Countdown: Number 10 – It's About Time!

As I was pondering ways to craft interesting posts that let us talk about our stuff, I realized that the Hidden Masters have been around, hidden-mastering, for a loooooong time. So I devised a challenge: Can I count backwards starting from 10, and write 10 Daily Illuminator posts about Steve Jackson Games products that each incorporate that day's number in its name? Oh, and make sure that each day talks about a different product line? And, ideally, ensure that the item is in some fashion "in print" so you can possibly pick it up without too much trouble? I'm honestly not certain I can do it, but that's never stopped me before, so let's go . . . starting with number 10!

As someone who participated in a high-school fundraiser involving the Rocky Horror Picture Show (which 10,000% couldn't be done nowadays), I love Munchkin 10 – Time Warp . It's a great addition to the Munchkin line, with heaps of historical hilarity to add to your game. If you're looking for a great holiday gift for the gamer in your life, a copy of Time Warp – and the core set or deluxe edition, if needed – proves there's no time like the present. (See what I did there?)

Okay! One down; nine to go. I've already name-dropped quite possibly our most iconic product line; by my self-imposed rules, I have to try not to use the series again for this countdown. I am doomed.

December 13, 2023: Bestiaries Are Cool

This is the last full day for The Fantasy Trip Bestiary and Foes 2 STL Miniatures Kickstarter! If you haven't made your pledge yet, this is your last chance. We have some great rewards available for our backers, including a PDF version of the Bestiary for our international friends and VTT enthusiasts. Check it out! While I'm not into 3D printing, I look forward to seeing what weird and wonderful creatures will appear in The Fantasy Trip Bestiary . I've always loved flipping through books that chronicle creatures, whether real or imagined. One of my favorite Christmas memories from childhood was receiving a personalized book featuring photos of animals that lived in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. (Does that count as a bestiary?) Not long after that, I discovered Gnomes by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet in my mother's collection of books. I spent hours poring over each page to learn where gnomes lived, what their houses looked like, what they did every day, and who their friends and enemies were. I was determined to use what I learned to seek out and befriend a gnome in real life. I never managed to find one – and no matter how much I begged them, I couldn't convince my parents to take me to Europe so I could continue the search. While I've obviously grown up since then, that sense of wonder has never left. Even today, there's a small part of me that hopes I'll encounter the truly fantastic while I'm out exploring nature.  If you also have a fondness for the creatures of myth and folklore, you'll definitely enjoy looking through The Fantasy Trip Bestiary . The book features a great collection of creatures that are perfect for your campaign or one-shot, including wolves, ghouls, crabmen, and even something called the Bloodtree. December 10, 2023: For Best Results, Mail It This Week!

Ahh, it's that time of year again. Holiday parties, jingly bells, and . . . really, really slow shipping! It's been affecting our containers of games on the water all year, of course, but this month it will affect all of us. All of us trying to send gifts to friends and family, that is.

Here at Warehouse 23, we strongly suggest you place your holiday orders before Friday, December 15. Everything ordered through Thursday, December 14, will be shipped out from Austin by Friday. From what the USPS and the various parcel services are telling us, these orders have the best chance of arriving before Christmas. (Sorry, no guarantees!) We'll continue to ship for another week, through Thursday, December 21, but only the supreme being of shipping knows when those might reach their destinations. Orders received after the 21st will not ship out until the first week of January.

We will be closed from Friday (around noon), December 22, until January 2, 2024. Of course, you can certainly place orders 24/7, but nothing will be leaving Austin until 2024. Hmmm . . . unless you buy a Gift Certificate, that is!
