I live and write in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. I never dreamed I’d call Sin City home, but when I arrived at the end of 1999 to do a little research for a book, I fell in love with the city beyond the neon and and never left. Actually, I love the neon, too. In fact, I’m crazy about the whole place -- quirks, warts, super-hot summers, and all! I write about “real life in the shadow of the Strip” for Living-Las-Vegas.com, but what I like best is crafting fiction set here. I have two mysteries set in Las Vegas: GETTING OFF ON FRANK SINATRA and FULL SERVICE BLONDE. Both feature aspiring journalist Copper Black. There's a third Copper Black mystery in the works, but before that is released, the book I came here to finish in 1999 finally has a p ...more

Since that doesn't happen often enough, I have to make myself write anyway, even if I feel like I have nothing to say and no skill. I've come to realize that while inspiration is a lovely thing, it is not the most important ingredient for writing success. The important thing is doing it anyway, no matter what. Then, when inspiration shows up like a rare and beautiful bird, I appreciate it, knowing full well it will soon fly off again. I will say, those rare and beautiful birds show up a lot more often if I keep writing than if I wait for them to appear...(less)

I wish I could say I've never suffered from it, but to be honest, it has plagued me from time to time. The best remedy I've found is to switch to another writing project. Sometimes this breaks through the block, and I can get back to work on whatever was giving me the problem. Another thing that does the trick is having a deadline. When I know I must write to keep a commitment, I have less trouble with blockage. I do cherish those wonderful times when words flow like a babbling brook. It doesn't happen every day, but fortunately, neither does writer's block!(less)

A Movie for a Quarantine Evening

Into Great Silence

Like many people I know during this time of Covid, I have chosen to stay at home more than normal and to connect with friends and family through technology rather than in person. While I look forward to a time when gatherings and parties can once again take place without the shadow of pandemic hanging over them, I have found reasons to appreciate this unexpected social hiatus. I’ve finished a manu
