Her books are noted for their depictions of mentally and emotionally impaired individuals who have difficulty coping with an inhospitable world.
As New York Times Book Review contributor Alice McDermott put it, “Morris does not devise plots, but traps: steel-toothed, inescapable traps of circumstance and personality against which her characters struggle... and then fail.” Ultimately, Morris suggests that these individuals are incapable of surviving their surroundings.
