A sua pesquisa segue uma orientação interdisciplinar (antropologia, sociologia e história), combinando estudos imperiais e pós-coloniais, antropologia histórica e história e sociologia da ciência. Tem-se interessado em especial por explorar as relações entre ciências humanas, poder colonial e culturas indígenas nos séculos XIX e XX, com enfoque nos territórios de Goa, Timor Leste e Angola. Os seus anteriores temas de pesquisa têm passado também pela sociologia da cultura e da leitura, os estudos sobre cultura material, e a história da medicina colonial.

No ICS, é actualmente o Investigador Principal de dois projectos, financiados pela FCT: Mimetismo colonial na Ásia e África Lusófonas (PTDC/CS-ANT/101064/2008), um estudo de antropologia histórica comparada sobre mimetismo colonial e relações interculturais no império português nos séculos XIX e XX; e As ciências da classificação antropológica em ‘Timor Português’ (1894-1975) (HC/0089/2009) um estudo de história da ciência sobre as relações entre o conhecimento antropológico e o colonialismo português em Timor Leste durante o século XX. Participa ainda em vários outros projectos do ICS nas áreas de história e antropologia do colonialismo e de estudos sociais da ciência. (Ver ‘Investigação’).

O seu primeiro livro, Antropologia e Império: Fonseca Cardoso e a Expedição à Índia em 1895 (Lisboa: ICS, 2001), foi distinguido com a Menção Honrosa do Prémio A. Sedas Nunes de Ciências Sociais em 2002. O seu mais recente livro, Headhunting and Colonialism: Anthropology and the Circulation of Human Skulls in the Portuguese Empire, 1870-1930, um estudo sobre violência colonial e colecções científicas de crânios humanos em Timor Leste, foi publicado pela editora Palgrave Macmillan em 2010. ...more
