Get the K Out

Really, there haven't been that many changes. In 2005, when I published Everything We Haven't Lost, I called myself by my name: Kyle David Paul. I have a lot of middle names, and David was the one I used most often. But it was long, and a little generic, and really felt like three first names in a row. So in 2007, when I was prepping to come out with No Chinook, I changed my public name to K Sawyer Paul. Sawyer just sounds cooler, and shortening Kyle to just "K" had a somewhat literary bent.

I've been using that for the last six years, but I've never been wholly satisfied with it. The K is awkward, and new people have no idea what to call me. It's also infuriating online, where there's no ability to have a first name be an initial (so a lot of my online forms have either "Kyle Paul" or "Sawyer Paul" or "K Sawyer," then "Paul"). The fact is, a lot of people just call me "KSP," which is great, and would be perfect except for that there's this game called the Kerbal Space Program that has the SEO for that one all locked up.

As a guy at a party sometime last year told me, "Yeah, you're going to lose to them. They're great." Seriously, screw that game.

I can't just do "Kyle Paul," either, because it's too short, too obviously two first names, and the domains are all taken. As rare as it was to be a Kyle in 1983, it's super popular now, and the kids are way better at domain management. But there really still aren't that many Sawyer's. So from here on, I'll be going by Sawyer Paul. Three syllables. Easy to remember, and rare enough that you'll know it's me.

I just bought www.sawyerpaul.com, and that'll be added to this domain. KSP.me will still work, as will my email. Twitter is now @_sawyerpaul. Facebook is now Sawyer Paul (which is much easier to search). It'll take some time to log in everywhere and update it, and I know that everyone who knows me now is going to be confused and just keep calling me whatever. That's fine. I'm not going to be a dick about it.

I don't know what to do about my email, though. Sawyer@ksp.me? Sawyer@sawyerpaul.com? I don't know. Suggestions would be appreciated!

You have already played The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

There’s a fine line between being in continuity and being in purgatory, stuck somewhere neither new nor old.

How Corona Gale Part 1 and 2 fit together

lattice-issue-7.jpg

lattice-issue-6.jpg

Above are the covers for Lattice 6 and 7, which contain two parts of one novella, Corona Gale. As you can see, the cover design flows from left to right, but part 2 comes first chronologically, even though part 1 was released one month earlier.

If you've read part 1, you know that it comes to an abrupt and climatic end (there are also a lot of unanswered questions). Part 2 takes place before 1, with Kate Foley in various scenes of her youth. Each chapter is a few years apart, and shows her growing up, facing challenges from her family and two of her boyfriends (though Ollie and Scott appear briefly). Part 2 finishes up just after part 1 begins, so there is a little overlap.

You can read the story in either order, but the preferred route is Part 1, then 2. That's why I released them like that. The story may make more linear sense in reverse, however, I think it's a better story when you get the climax out of the way in the first act. I'd be interested in seeing how other people find it.

Of course, there is a secret here, and I'll tell you even if it doesn't really make much sense out of context: Part 2 may actually happen chronologically after part 1, even though the events cover a younger version of Kate. Whether this is true depends a lot on believing the ramblings of the madmen who causes all the problems. I understand if this is confusing. Read them! That will help things tremendously.

Corona Gale part 2 will be out at the end of December. Part 1 is available now

Lattice 6: Corona Gale Part 1

lattice-issue-6.jpg

Kate Foley is invited to join a cruise. She doesn't know why, and her first few hours offers few answers. She feels she is there to stop something, or someone, but there are not enough clues. And then it all goes wrong.

Content Aware Typography

Content Aware Typography is a Tumblr showcasing what happens when Photoshop's content-aware fill gets anywhere near type. I made a few and submitted them. In case they don't like them, here they are:
