Publication – Lifting the Weight

My story “Lifting the Weight” is included in this anthology from Death’s Head Press. A bit earthier and more violent than my usual fare, so be warned! The narrator is a demon with a lust for wealth. Bad luck leaves him cursed by a necromancer, carrying a Weight that he can only relieve by righting wrongs. Following a […]

Thematic spoilers, but nothing about the plot.

Re-presenting Homeric epics from the perspective of the women in the stories is nothing new. In the early 90's my friend, the late poet Joy Yourcenar, wrote her Mythologies which included the searing and

I rarely abandon a book, especially if I have been engaged by its predecessors in a series. And lord knows I was impatient for the release of this final installment of the Spiritwalker series.

Cold Fire was a high four, pushing a five. Cold Magic was

This was sitting on a shelf for a long time, I got back to it after reading Warlight.

It is a tough read - the brutality of war is laid bare through its effects on the lives of ordinary people, illuminated by Ondaatje's rich prose and startling image

This is an author's self-indulgence that doesn't quite work. It is a Chaucerian conceit, laced with Keats and a sprinkling of Shakespeare among others. Seven pilgrims tell their stories, each of which is well executed in its own right, and the world ...more

Classic Ondaatje. This is beautifully complex, picking the threads of memory and weaving together a narrative that only in its broadest sweep follows the passage of time. Ondaatje has retained his poets eye for equivalences and poets ear for rhythm, ...more

More of Ali's books…
Sylvia Plath
“There is something demoralizing about watching two people get more and more crazy about each other, especially when you are the only extra person in the room. It's like watching Paris from an express caboose heading in the opposite direction--every second the city gets smaller and smaller, only you feel it's really you getting smaller and smaller and lonelier and lonelier, rushing away from all those lights and excitement at about a million miles an hour.”
Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Hunter S. Thompson
“A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.”
Hunter S. Thompson, The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967

Bob Marley
“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She's not perfect—you aren't either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break—her heart. So don't hurt her, don't change her, don't analyze and don't expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she's not there.”
Bob Marley

Lois McMaster Bujold
“How like a man, to change from mask to mask like a player, concealing all intention, yet leave his heart out on the table, carelessly, unregarded, for all to behold.”
Lois McMaster Bujold, Paladin of Souls
