And because I usually have at least one fiction and one poetry project running in parallel, it makes the switch easier in a way.

If all else fails, I find 'found' poetry is a good way to get words out; you don't have to stress about coming up with what feels like a valuable new idea. The building blocks are essentially there, and the writer's task in 'curating' these and turning them into something else is a very different exercise.(less)

Knowing something isn't quite right but not knowing why. Finding ideas difficult to mine. Worrying that you're not very good. Being afraid to put your head above the parapet.

Oh, and worrying that you're not very good. Or did I mention that already..?

The best? Finding two lines in a poem or a paragraph in some prose that you wrote, and thinking "That's good. I KNOW that's good - and I wrote that!"... And when someone who knows what they are talking about - because they're a reader, a writer too - tells you that they like what you've written.

Just recently someone said this:

"what I’m really drawn to is your lovely prose and poetry ... I’m impressed and wanted to let you know."

Thanks Deborah. Maybe that's the best thing of all..!(less)

“A Gentleman in Moscow”

Perhaps it is inevitable that a novel which relates the experiences of a man spending his life entirely ensconced in a Moscow hotel is somewhat episodic, at times reading more like a collection of little vignettes than anything else. If so, then the fact that Amor Towles’ “A Gentleman in Moscow” is c.450 pages long… Read More “A Gentleman in Moscow” Read more of this blog post »
