Óttar Martin received his BA and MA degrees in Philosophy from the University of Iceland in 2003 and 2005 respectively, spending 2004 at the University of Aberdeen. In 2006 Óttar moved to study Spanish at the University of Seville, and has also studied German in Heidelberg and French in Nice, besides teaching himself Arabic.
He has worked as a journalist and editor, baked pizzas, worked in a bookshop and been an assistant teacher at the University of Iceland. Since 2004, however, he has concentrated on his literary career.
