Evil is Just Plain “Less”

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 12, 2023

Zechariah 9:12 – Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.

Life is full of unexpected turns. It’s a good thing our God remains constant throughout the ages. He is stable and able. That’s good news! As the people of God, we have hope for the future and place of safety for today. When we turn to Him, the Lord gives us a promise to restore double anything the enemy stole. So, if you lost something, rejoice! You are up for an upgrade. Our God is awesome!

Declaration: I will not cry over spilled milk because God has more. Just like my soul, what was lost in my life will be found–even a double portion.

EVIL IS JUST PLAIN “LESS”

One thing the Bible makes clear, and my experience backs up, is that evil is “less” – it is toothless, venom-less and defenseless. It is clearly less than good.

Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger and even Pablo Escobar were all feared as being unstoppable evil. They were also rounded up and shot by Texans who were not afraid to hunt them down and put an end to their reign of terror.

When the American military came knocking, Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of 9-11 which changed our world forever, tried to hide behind one of his wives. Likewise, Sadam Hussein was found cowering in a spider hole full of fleas. See my point?

Then, there is Al Capone. He was the meanest gangster bully ever, but he spent several years in the fetal position in cell 181 on Alcatraz Island. He wept so much through the night, the other inmates called him names and made fun of him. He died from the insanity and pain that syphilis and gonorrhea had brought him. His tombstone reads, “My Jesus, Mercy.”

Now with ruthless murderers like Capone, we don’t want to think about their possible redemption. We don’t sit around hoping he found Jesus and we’ll see him in Heaven. It’s natural, and I mean that word for what it is, that we want to see him punished and pay for the horrible evil he dealt others on earth.

However, no matter how evil someone has been during their life, the goodness of Jesus is greater! True power is the power to forgive and save. Evil can’t do that.

Here is an example from the book of Joshua. Waiting for the Lord’s instructions on how to take the evil city of Jericho, Joshua looks up and sees a mighty warrior with a sword standing in front of him. He asks the question we all want to ask and gets an answer none of us would expect.

Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

“Neither,” he replied, “But as commander of the army of the Lord, I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for His servant?” – Joshua 5:13-14

Joshua asked a wise question: whose side are you on – good or evil? The reply Jesus gave dropped Joshua to his knees in worship: “Neither.”

You see, if the evil people of Jericho would have repented and asked for forgiveness, Jesus would have extended it and saved them. That’s the power of good over evil. It is a power each of us who are saved should be so grateful for, we should want to see it extended, even to the Al Capone’s of this world.

I’m Not Supposed to Have Pain

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 11, 2023

Ecclesiastes 9:11 – I returned and saw under the sun that— The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.

Everyone gets the same 24-hours each day, yet that time looks so different for each person. How is it that some are able to move mountains and accomplish the impossible, and others do not see any change from one day to the next? It’s so important to be intentional with every minute of your time. God created you with a purpose and has things for you to accomplish every day. Do not miss His divine appointments so you can align yourself for your assignment today.

Declaration: I will fulfill all of God’s plans for my life. I am intentional about my purpose and assignment.

I’M NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE PAIN!

Several years ago, a young woman came into my office for marriage counseling. She didn’t bring her husband, which raised my eyebrow. After a few minutes of telling me how bad things were, she finally told me why she was really there: she was leaving her husband and said that God wanted her to do it.

So I asked her why she felt God was wanted her to get a divorce. Through tear-filled eyes she replied, “Because God doesn’t want me to have pain.”

As quick as I could, I retorted, “Who told you that?”

It was a good question because I’ll tell you who didn’t ,and his name starts with a capital “J” and ends in “esus.” When we believe something that is just not true, God will challenge us by asking, “who told you that?”

Set the clock back about 6,000 years to the Garden of Eden. There we find two slack-jawed people with a problem.

Like a lot of young couples, they had gotten themselves into debt without a mode of payment. No, this was not about a credit card. This was about giving the Master charge over their lives and the penalty for disobedience was higher then either one of them could have imagined.

Genesis records the event as the greatest act of murder committed in human history: with one stroke of disobedience, Adam aborted every human that would ever be born and brought all of us to death before we even took our first breath.

No sooner had the deed been done than Adam and Eve were hiding, because Daddy was going to be home soon.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” So he said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked and I hid myself.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?” – Genesis 3:8-11

Any time God asks a question, it is not because He lacks the answer. He asks questions with the intent of bringing us to a conclusion. In Adams’s case, as with the young lady in my office wanting a divorce, this question needs an answer: Who told you that? Who are you listening to?

When we’re forced to answer, we generally recognize the answer is, “not God.” Remember, it’s not the truth that sets you free. It’s knowing the truth, and until God forced Adam to own the answer, Adam’s healing would not begin.

Do you want your healing to begin?

Whatcha Doing?

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 10, 2023

Ecclesiastes 9:10 – Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

How many great ideas, beautiful masterpieces, and amazing inventions died with the people who carried them and never let them out? What has the Lord put inside you that is ready to flourish and bring answers to this world? Today is a good day to start dreaming. Be intentional and pursue the manifestation of that dream into reality. God didn’t make a mistake by entrusting you with His creativity and innovation.

Declaration: I carry answers from the Father. I’m creative and I bring forth God’s intentions and inventions.

WHATCHA DOING?

Once you start pursuing the heart of Jesus with all your heart, you’re going to start pursuing excellence. Pursuing excellence is a matter of a whole-hearted endeavor. Just ask Solomon.

“Whatever you find to do, do it with all your heart.” – Ecclesiastes 9:10

Along the same lines, Deuteronomy 6 and Matthew 23 say, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind…” When you get to know His heart, your desires will become His desires and vice-versa.

To prove the point, one of my favorite Scriptures is what one leper says to another as they’re sitting by the gate to the city begging:

“Why should we sit here, waiting to die?” – 2 Kings 7:3

Sometimes, there needs to be a moment of clarity. “I have been sitting here for ten years, waiting on this thing to change and it hasn’t changed. I’m not sitting here anymore. I have to do something different. I’ve got to get up and show my intention to fight. I have to repent of sitting here and calling it holiness.”

Inactivity is not holiness. Heaven is such a busy place and the Spirit of God is so busy. It’s hard to decipher at times whether or not we should “wait on God” not doing anything or “take an action to co labor.” Yes, there’s a big difference.

It’s important to have a personal relationship with Him so you can simply ask if He wants you to wait or work with Him for a result. He will direct your paths, which is Proverbs 3:6.

He has chosen you to be a star player on His team. Wait when needed. Observe, learn and grow. When you know His Spirit has asked you to move, move with boldness and authority. Trusting that He has gone before you.

If whatever you find to do, you do it with all your heart, it makes no difference if you clean toilets, preach from a nice pulpit or fly a jet plane for the military. You are doing as if you are doing it for Him. Truth is, you are.

Movers and Shakers

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 9, 2023

1 Samuel 9:9 – (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)

Don’t be deceived by horoscopes and “seers” promising winning numbers for the lottery. They might call themselves prophets, but if their hearts do not belong to Jesus, their council is not of God. On the other hand, don’t be freaked out by someone at church telling you about a dream or vision from the Lord. This is normal for Jesus’ people. Do you want God to speak to you and reveal His heart for the future? Seek Him. Walk intimately with Jesus and you will not be misled.

Declaration: I am a Kingdom person. I walk by the spirit and I will not be deceived.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

The greatest threat to a new move of God is what you think of the last move of God. Did you embrace it so tightly you can’t move on to the new thing He is doing?

It’s not about the method of how God moves. It is about God moving and we must be willing to follow Him forward however or wherever He chooses.

Look at all the different ways Jesus reached the people He came into contact with. From turning water into wine, to attaching the ear of Malchus back to his head. From preaching to the crowds to visiting Zacheus at this house. From ordering out demons, to touching lepers and spitting on dirt to make clay that would open blind eyes – Jesus didn’t do things the same way every time!

He never used a single method to bring people into the Kingdom. Each method He used was right, though none of them was the only way to solve the problem. As Jesus’ resurrection would prove, you can’t keep Jesus nailed down or in a box!

In an exclusive interview with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who had experienced the Spirit of Religion most of his life, Jesus warned this high ranking religious authority that He uses creative methods to teach, heal and bring people into the Kingdom.

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8

Are you someone who has been told the Spirit of Religion is the only way to worship? That God no longer heals or works miracles? Are you realizing you have been keeping Jesus in a box and limiting His power or His love for those you don’t like?

In or Out of Season

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 8, 2023

Matthew 9:8 – Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

As God’s children, we are loyal. We are sons and daughters of the King! Our heavenly Father delights in each of us. We are blessed daily to be a blessing to those around us. Today, you will have an opportunity to bring justice and righteousness to your family, co-workers, or a stranger on the street. Don’t miss your opportunity to rule today and bring God all the glory.

Declaration: I will bring heaven to earth today. I will point to the Father and let all who hear me know He is good.

IN OR OUT OF SEASON

The Boy Scouts motto is “Be prepared” and let me tell you, it’s a Kingdom motto whether the Boy Scouts meant it to be or not. It means you should always be in a state of readiness to do your duty in both mind and body.

Paul was a big fan of being prepared because he had to be. He never knew if there was a mob waiting to beat him behind the warm welcome of the believers.

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. – 2 Timothy 4:2

So, what does it mean to be prepared in or out of season? It means to read the signs of the times and know how to react. You don’t wear a down parka in the summer heat or a bikini in the middle of winter. If you want to be effective, you’ll “dress for the occasion,” as I like to say, by knowing the times you are living in.

That phrase “in or out of season” also means to be ready to act whether it’s convenient or inconvenient—whether it makes sense or it doesn’t. To move if it’s clean and pretty or if it’s messy and ugly. Be ready if you’re feeling it or if you’re not—if the environment is hostile or friendly. The Kingdom needs to be advanced and it’s on you do move it forward, my friend.

Jesus has a huge value for you being prepared because He hates to see you caught in the collateral damage. Yes, He’ll pick you up, dust you off and apply some salve over your wounds, but He’d rather see you succeed without a cleanup crew. It’s up to you.

Unfinished Works of Art

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 7, 2023

Isaiah 9:7 – Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Do you know you are created to participate in that increase of His government and peace? God takes advancement and multiplication seriously. He is the voice that cheers you on to do great things, take risks, and make this world look more like heaven than hell. God says, “Go for it and I will celebrate your progression.” Don’t fear the mess of mistakes or failure will bring His disapproval. He already knows and is confident in His plan. Religion trains you to think the worst that can happen is to do something wrong. Jesus teaches the worst thing that can happen is for you to do nothing at all!

Declaration: I will move forward and trust Jesus to bless my mess.

UNFINISHED WORKS OF ART

Did you know that Leonardo Da Vinci never finished the Mona Lisa? Did you know that he painted two of them? Do a Google search on the second Mona Lisa and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Unfortunately, I think our portrait of Jesus might look more like the Mona Lisa than anything else because we are not really sure if God actually smiles. It is absolutely evident to me, and anybody with a third grade education, that the church as a whole has not been totally convinced of God’s goodness. Because of that, the church has not been known for being life-giving.

Many people throughout my life and ministry have told me they consider the church to be a lot of folks wearing frowns of disapproval. We’ve all seen them. Has your kid ever thrown a fit during church? Frowns. Have you even worn less than your Sunday best? Frowns. Struggled with an addiction, sickness or had a financial hardship? More frowns.

The church has been known for judging people who are not just like them for far too long. Let’s change that!

We need to paint pictures of God’s goodness through our goodness. The Bible tells us in Ephesians that we’re supposed to be imitators of God. It also tells us that God is love, so we should look like love! When we don’t, people like Billy Joel write songs about us that reflect poorly on God.

“I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints,

The sinners are much more fun.

You know that only the good die young.”

God doesn’t laugh? He spends His time crying and being a killjoy? Who told Billy Joel that? We did.

As the church, we have a lot of work to do. We need to finish the painting of God’s goodness. It’s OK to put a smile on the face of Jesus because He really is good!

Good Helps the Hurting

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER –  September 6, 2023

John 9:6 – When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.

Spit and mud? Sometimes we look for God to move in a certain way, but when He shows up, we get offended. We compare how God moved for someone else and wonder why He is not doing the same for us. It’s a good thing the blind man didn’t get offended by Jesus’ methods. He believed even though it did not make any sense. Did he know the Lord was recreating his eyeballs out the same material he was made of? Probably not. In His kindness, God knows exactly how to do a miracle in your life. It’s time for you to glory Him!

Declaration: I will not partner with offense or question God’s ways. My life will glorify the Lord.

GOOD HELPS THE HURTING

On a recent trip to Africa, I had a mission on my mission trip.

At 36,000 feet on a very long flight, I was trying to keep my mind occupied when the Lord stepped in and gave me three God-thoughts, or Holy Ghost flashcards if you will. They went like this:

Boom! Little boy, orphaned, unloved, dejected.

Boom! Under a tree, crying, sad, helpless.

Boom! Broken arm, pain, ongoing anxiety.

Right away, I knew God had spoken to me, so I told Leanna we were going to be on the lookout for an orphan boy under a tree with a broken arm. “We are going to help him,” I told her.

Now, words cannot describe the welcome we get when we arrive at one of our orphanages. It’s a celebration that I imagine is something like your first day in Heaven. You walk through a tunnel of people all smiling and wanting to shake your hand. The music is blaring, there are people dancing and celebrating. I never get tired of it.

On this trip, we were engulfed in the celebration when I looked over the heads my beloved Ugandan munchkins and there he was! The boy God had told me about. He was standing naked under a tree, crying and holding his arm.

“There he is,” I shouted at Leanna. Now my wife has a real way with children. It’s something you have to see to understand. The minute she saw him, she abandoned the celebration and was holding him in her arms. He was terrified because she was the first white person he’d ever seen, but that didn’t last long as her words and gestures soothed him.

It was just like God had said. I knew we had been sent there just for him because God sees the evil that is done to the orphaned. You know, we were all once orphaned, stumbling around in pain, unloved and lonely. Then Father God sent Jesus to round us up and make us part of the family.

Who Told You Life is Fair?

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 5, 2023

Genesis 9:5 – Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast, I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man.

Do you truly understand the power of the blood? The Lord says life itself is in the blood. When a baby is born, there is blood. When death comes, blood stops flowing. The spilling of a man’s blood is a big deal in God’s eyes and required the death penalty. Yet in His kindness and love, He let His Son, Jesus Christ, take that punishment upon Himself so no more blood had to be poured out to cover the horrible things people choose to do. Have you tapped into the power of redemption through the blood?

Declaration: I am not my own master. I was bought and paid for with the precious blood of Christ. I serve only Him.

WHO TOLD YOU LIFE IS FAIR?

Years ago when were were first married, Leanna and I were too poor to afford a movie, so our entertainment was driving through the swanky neighborhoods in Colleyville, Texas.

Looking at the mansions, we would imagine what was behind the doors and dream of having a nice, big house someday. Our own house, used to store hay for 20 years before cleaned it out and moved in, didn’t have glass in some of the windows. We couldn’t afford it and I didn’t know how to fix it even if we did have the money.

We loved driving down the tree-lined streets ooh-ing and aah-ing at the multiple rows of million-dollar homes. For us, it was cheap entertainment and we needed all that we could get!

One day, we were with a bandmate of mine, and we had time to kill before a gig. With nothing better to do, I asked him if he wanted to check out the mansions with us. His answer surprised me.

“I can’t go look at those houses because it makes me sad,” he said.

Puzzled, I asked this 40-year-old man why looking at nice houses made him sad. His answer now astounded me.

“Because it’s not fair.”

God help us! What kind of socialist thinking had crawled up from the depths of hell and wrapped itself around his head? Let’s get honest here – a godly person should never get sad, angry or jealous when someone else prospers. There is no place for envy in the church!

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. – Romans 12:15

The question is, who told him life is fair? It sure wasn’t Jesus.

I got into a fight with my friend that day. I was young and didn’t know how to handle myself, but I did know this: in all the times we had driven through those ritzy neighborhoods, it had not occurred to me, not even once, to hate the people who had nice things, or even to want those things. They didn’t belong to me.

I have a saying, “You may see their glory, but you don’t know their story.”

You see, many of those homes were owned by doctors and surgeons. I pointed out to my friend that if he wanted a house like that, all he had to do was dedicate years and years of his life to the relentless pursuit of being a surgical specialist, then sacrifice more years to paying off the monstrous debt accumulated during that pursuit. After that, he could buy a big house and make those payments, pay those taxes and be sure to get a good security system, because it might make someone else sad.

There is no way you can be happy, or have actual joy in your life, if you subscribe to the thinking pattern of “NO FAIR!” Jesus never sinned, but He took our wrongdoing upon Himself and died to give us life. Now that’s not fair – it’s sacrifice.

Open Your Eyes

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER –  September 4, 2023

Matthew 9:4 – But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?”

We think of sin as an action that hurts others, or an action done to us. But know this: Your thoughts can take you to a dangerous place. Your condemning thought against yourself can hurt you and lead you into darkness. God really does observe our thinking. Your every contemplation, scheme, image–good, bad, natural or spiritual–is seen and heard by the Lord Almighty. He judges mental actions the same as physical ones. Don’t let your thoughts run off to dangerous places. Set them on Jesus and see where He takes you.

Declaration: I align my thoughts with the thoughts of God. He will bring His perfect will into my life when I contemplate Him.

OPEN YOUR EYES

God does not hide things from us. He hides things for us. But if you fold your arms and say, “Pastor Troy, if God’s not going to just tell me, I’m not seeking,” you’re going to have problems. Need an example?

God caused human beings to want gold. Gold is a yellow rock. Yet, God Almighty hid the yellow rock inside other rocks. The only way you can find it is to bust up some rocks. That’s the Kingdom.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing but the honor of kings to search out the matter. –  Proverbs 25:2

You are beginning to step into majesty when you search and pursue, when you go after things. God doesn’t see you as a loser. He sees you as a King, so He expects you to go after things. He will use your individual gifts and talents for His Kingdom and your destiny.

Say you have a talent for music and playing instruments. God may lead you toward leading worship. You may have a love for children. The nursery at your church may benefit from your skills. What is it your heart wants? Chase that dream.

Once you begin to seek your part in the Kingdom, God will reveal tid-bits to advance your search. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 14:1 says to “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.”

You have to go after it. This is the New Testament where you desire and pursue. You need to pay attention to what your desires, or your want-life, is all about. Be careful that you don’t get fascinated with somebody else’s something. God has enough and a plan just for you, so search it out. It’s so worth it!

A Real Eye-Opener

TODAY’S PROPHETIC NUMBER – September 3, 2023

Daniel 9:3 – Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

Church people like to say, “If it’s God’s will, it will happen.” The Bible doesn’t say this! We see Jacob wrestling with the angel of the Lord until he gets what he is asking for and Daniel turning his full attention to the Lord to get the answer he needs. Both are going after God with everything they have. How dedicated are you in fully pursuing the will of God in your life? His will for you is for you to possess the Promised Land. Are you ready to leave Egypt? Are you done with Babylon? Come out and follow the One True God!

Declaration: I will see and enter my Promised Land. I will not grow weary and turn back or fall into the sin of Babylon.

A REAL EYE-OPENER

Let me tell you about the most incredible healing miracle I have ever personally witnessed.

One of the greatest doors God has opened for me is the ability to serve in the south Texas town of Brownsville. It’s as far south as you can get while still being in the United States.

Brownsville is an extreme place, like most border towns. I love places like this because that’s where God can do radical things. This night, He took us across the border to the city of Matamoros and into a tiny church. The people seemed to be sizing us gringos up. They looked suspicious until the Holy Spirit began to move though the praise music we were playing.

During the second song, people started to stand up and praise in Spanish. People were crying, shaking and lifting their hands to God in surrender. The sermon went out the window and it was just a radical time of praise and brokenness before the Lord. Many were shouting at the top of their lungs and God began to do his thing.

I had never been to church like this before. I couldn’t understand what they were saying to the pastor as he moved the room. Finally, he took the microphone and began to tell of people who had been cured of sickness and disease as they praised. The room was going nuts. Then, as an old woman walked up to the microphone, the crowd became suddenly quiet.

She had gone to this church since she was a child. She lost her eyesight at a teenager due to undiagnosed diabetes. She had been blind for several decades. Then, as the second song played, she said the Holy Spirit came upon her in an unusual way. She began to see a vision, then realized it wasn’t a vision at all. She could see!

“Now, you know me and you know that I am blind,” she said. Then, with God as my witness, she began pointing to people in the crowd. “If I am blind, how can I see you? And you. And you…”

We literally saw blind eyes opened through praise and worship! None of us preached, called down healing or laid a hand on her. No man can take credit for what God had done. Sometimes a special move of God isn’t taught, it’s caught!

Since then, there have been dark times in my walk where I’ve been tempted to doubt God’s healing power. Every time I do, I think back to that night in Matamoros when a woman was healed of blindness by God Himself.

I wonder how many times the devil tried to stop her from going to the church that night. How many times did he tempt her to stay home or leave after finding out a gringo was preaching? If she had played any one of those cards, she would still be blind today. Instead, she was in the house of God and expectant that something was going to happen. That day, it did.

What about you?
