Once Upon A Time I Read…

that one can be grateful for both the good and the bad. Wish I could find the source because in an existential way it’s absolutely true. No luck.

Yesterday I had lots of time to think as I waited five hours for a furniture delivery to my son’s new rental. Watching the folks in this economically distressed neighborhood, I realized I am grateful. Everyone, no matter how little he or she possessed, had a smile and a hello for me as I sat in the sun up on the porch– broken furnace, cold in the hou...

Can you smile with your eyes?

I can’t. I tried. I look like an idiot, a drunk, a total crazy-ass bag lady. I hate photos of myself enough as it is.

Smile with my eyes? I can smile with my whole face but seems that’s wrong. It’s all in the eyes.

Or maybe in the airbrushing. Not sure. I really don’t get it. Looks to me like she’s sorta flirting with the camera. Maybe that’s it. Flirting with the camera.

From my perspective a real smile is nothing more or less than a genuine smile, one that reaches the eyes. Makes ‘em crinkle.

The concept of The Magical Negro.

I thought I was just being racist except my great-grandmother was black so that can’t be it. My parents and grandparents were still fighting Jim Crow Laws when I was a baby. Segregation was not legal in Iowa but some communities, ours for example, passed local ordinances designed to keep the races separate – not in schools, but there was discrimination in housing, in business, in restaurants – businesses and restaurants could refuse to serve blacks. My grandparents owned a restaurant in town...

Had to take this damn picture with my tongue!

Holding a pen in my mouth wouldn’t work.

A pencil wouldn’t work.

A chopstick wouldn’t work.

My nose wouldn’t work.

A potato peeler wouldn’t work.

Had to use my tongue.

Bloody hell!

I’ll take free any day!

Internet discussions crop up nearly everyday regarding free books. Some book bloggers, especially those who receive FREE ARCs from major publishing houses… Wait, did I say FREE? Yeah, FREE… Complain that free book promotions by Indie authors diminish the intrinsic value of books, all books.

Baloney.

A free book promotion on Amazon or Smashwords is no different than a publisher sending out free ARCs to reviewers. Everyone forgets this fact — Big publishing gives out oodles of freebies. Some of t...

My New Favorite Commercial.

Commercials are becoming more like short films. As a matter of fact, some commercials are better than movies. I do have a couple favorites. One you’ve seen but it’s worth replaying. The other is Uncle Drew, Part III. It’s great. Let’s see if this new computer will upload the videos. (I still won’t drink Pepsi but the commercial diminishes my dislike somewhat.)

It’s a question of time…

I miss you all so much but I’m tied up with family stuff and I’m still getting comfortable with this computer. It’s got the weirdest damn keyboard I’ve ever used. My fingers haven’t decided what they think.

On another note…

My son says Old Navy is using Edwin Abbott Abbott’s Flatland as an inspiration for their commercials. I told him it’s just that all the models are a size -2. But I suppose that’s pretty much the same as being from Flatland.

I’ll post when I can. And when I’m not chugging Pend...

Splat!

That was the sickening sound my laptop made when I dropped it onto the hardwood floor. Killed it. But I know a guy… He was able to save my data and upload it to this new el-cheapo computer. I’m kinda sick of buying new computers all the damn time because I break them so frequently. Computers and cell phones.

Sigh.

You think just once I’d buy the warranty. But hope springs eternal!

So anyway there’s this stinkin’ learning curve on this new computer and it has these annoying Windows 8 tendencies e...
