I will be reading several books regarding the Battle of Nashville, including, Embrace an Angry Wind by Wiley Sword; Wilson's Cavalry Corps: Union Campaigns in the Western Theatre, by Jerry Keenan; Nathan Bedford Forrest: A Biography, By Jack Hurst, as well as several others. In addition, I have several fun books to read which includes: re-reading Boris Akunin's series which starts with The Winter Queen; Rick Campbell's - Blackmail; Walter Edmonds - Drums along the Mohawk; Maureen Jennings - Let Darkness Bury the Dead; Dennis Lehane's - Since We Fell; Mark Mills - House of the Hunted and Where Dead Men Meet; Sarah Perry's - The Essex Serpent; Oliver Potzsch's - The Play of Death; Elizabeth Speller's - Hedge of Thorns; and I'll stop with Michael Stanley's - Deadly Trade. This should be a great summer for reading.(less)

The best thing for me when doing this, is telling the story of those brave people who helped define our country. I marvel at how close we came to tearing ourselves apart. So, I think it is important to tell the stories of the farm boys and workers who put on their uniforms and helped us be who we are.

It is also a delicate process. I often see how easily some people paint individuals as one dimensional characters, either good or bad. Certainly, there is a fair share of historical scoundrels. I try to believe that most individuals tried to do their very best and it is often circumstances, rather than character flaws, which resulted in bad outcomes. It is so easy for all of us to armchair quarterback when writing about history.(less)
