I just finished Claudia Hernández's SLASH AND BURN about the aftermath of the El Salvador Civil War, a multi-generational tale focused mainly on matriarchs (some of whom are ex-combatants) & daughters. Next up is Yuri Herrera's A SILENT FURY: THE EL BORDO MINE FIRE. It's his first non-fiction book, I believe. I loved SIGNS PRECEDING THE END OF THE WORLD. I also had the good fortune to read Patrick Hoffman's upcoming CLEAN HANDS, which is excellent. (Patrick is definitely one of my favorite crime writers writing today; THE WHITE VAN and EVERY MAN A MENACE are tremendous & really show his professional background as a private detective & how it adds to his fiction.) Lastly, I believe NO BEAST SO FIERCE by Edward Bunker is the last book I read that is currently out in the world. Who are you reading these days, Neil?(less)

I wanted to explore its dramatic opposite: which is to say, if A.I. is about lawlessness during the chaos of the '92 riots (to an extent), then T.S. was meant to be about the law and its implementation. It is, ultimately, a journey through the criminal justice system. Piloted by 12 voices and set in 1993, it's a story of the underworld—but one built by humans, for humans. The research for it took nearly 6 years, and nearly broke me on a couple occasions: I spoke to dozens of formerly incarcerated people, spent nearly a year with a parole agent, visited jails and prisons all over Southern California (even walked Chino's Palm Court in a stab vest), attended a gang conspiracy trial, and more. The key to my process, of course, is to earn the experience without letting the research weigh down the story. My goal was always to let the plot evolve organically from real world obstacles that any defendant in similar circumstances during that era might face. The end result is detailed and deep, but it’s still a thriller. Pace and stakes are primary. Always. I'm tremendously proud of this book, but man—I am glad it's done!(less)

“There’s a helicopter overhead—looks like Channel 7—shining a light down on us like we’re at the bottom of a deep, dark hole. The people who live around here, they know what that actually feels like. They know how ugly life can get. Everybody else, the people sitting at home, watching this unfold on television, they have no idea. Those are the people shocked by the riots. They can’t comprehend them because they don’t understand the other side. They don’t understand what happens to people with no money who live in a neighborhood where crime is actually a viable career path when there are no other opportunities, and I’m not excusing it or condoning it or saying it can’t be avoided, but I’m saying that’s how it is.”
