So, for example, if I don't know where to take the novel I'm currently working on, I'll see if I can add something to a short story. If the short story isn't coming along, I'll write something for my Web page. If writing isn't happening at all, I'll try working on a cartoon.

If absolutely nothing creative is going on, there are lots of behind the scenes things that I can do, such as correspondence with publishers, submitting short stories to new markets, research, answering questions on Goodreads (;-), et al. While not necessarily creative, these things are necessary, and they keep me connected to my larger career.

I think the worst thing a writer can do is try to force creativity when it's just not there; it's frustrating and the results are rarely usable. When I realize that I am truly blocked, I tend to distract myself with other pursuits and let my subconscious mind do its thing. My experience is that it will be sending more ideas than my conscious mind can handle soon enough.(less)

I was expecting this book to be a lot of silly fun, which it was. What I wasn't expecting were the darker, more heartfelt stories. This volume is full of variety and lots

I'm always delighted when I enjoy another Elsewhen Press author's work. Fictional Alignment is frequently hilarious, often suprisingly thoughtful and always goes in unexpected directions. And it has illustrations. A wonderfully unique read.

The fiction was excellent, but what really got me were the essays and personal testimonies, which showed the breadth of disabilities and the experiences of people with disabilities. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I will be the first to admit that I am not exactly poetry-literate. However, I heard Troy read some of his poems, and was enchanted. By turns hilarious and chilling (sometimes in the same poem), I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading this ...more
