Ira Nayman Wonderland. Because I want to experience a world that makes more sense than this one.

So, for example, if I don't know where to take the novel I'm currently working on, I'll see if I can add something to a short story. If the short story isn't coming along, I'll write something for my Web page. If writing isn't happening at all, I'll try working on a cartoon.

If absolutely nothing creative is going on, there are lots of behind the scenes things that I can do, such as correspondence with publishers, submitting short stories to new markets, research, answering questions on Goodreads (;-), et al. While not necessarily creative, these things are necessary, and they keep me connected to my larger career.

I think the worst thing a writer can do is try to force creativity when it's just not there; it's frustrating and the results are rarely usable. When I realize that I am truly blocked, I tend to distract myself with other pursuits and let my subconscious mind do its thing. My experience is that it will be sending more ideas than my conscious mind can handle soon enough.(less)

A humane science fiction novel with a lot of ziggy zaggy narrative surprises and humour. It reminded me of the writing of Kurt Vonnegut, but it is its own unique thing. Definitely worth a read.
