David James Keaton's writing has appeared in over 75 publications, online and in print. He received his MFA from the University of Pittsburgh and was the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Flywheel Magazine. His first collection of fiction, FISH BITES COP! Stories To Bash Authorities (Comet Press), was named the 2014 Short Story Collection of the Year by This Is Horror and was also a finalist for the Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award. Kirkus Reviews called his debut novel, THE LAST PROJECTOR (Broken River Books), "A world of wild fiction… rapidly paced and loaded with humor... a loopy, appealing mix of popular culture and thoroughly crazy people." His second collection of fiction, STEALING PROPELLER HATS FROM THE DEAD (PMMP), received a ...more

Their combination of confidence and arrogance is especially horrifying to me. And their faces are always red as a baboon's ass when they're yelling about me doing things incorrectly, which has only increased since I've become an adult. ("You're not on this team!") I don't have the exact statistics in front of me but I'm pretty sure 75% of the kids participating in a typical American football practice die of thirst.(less)

My preferences change constantly, but right now I'm not a fan of detectives, private investigators, and/or that type of series. If I buy a book, and I discover there's a sequel out there with that same character, I'll never get around to reading it. Unless it's a prequel, then I know the main character in my new book might actually die. But, yeah, I need closure with a book. If I wanted to follow the reoccurring adventures of some hard-drinking asshole, I'd call up Jack Knealy (you don't know him.). Also, finding-the-girl storylines are wearing me out. I noticed after the fact that the last five things I read involved plots looking for lost women. Tired of that, too. I know, I know, "finding the girl" is a tried-and-true trope, but unless those tropes are subverted in a new and interesting way, I guess I just like my crime weird. On unsure footing. Unclassifiable really. That's what I want.(less)

Hard Sentences: Crime Fiction Inspired by Alcatraz

Writers! Some new hotness:

So after visiting Alcatraz a couple times since I’ve moved to California, I had a brainstorm… Over 5,000 tourists visit the Rock EVERY DAY. And they have a gift shop on the island with a book section and some bush-league, self-published prison books, including some “theme” collections no one would look twice at in a bookstore, but I’ve seen these tourists snat
