James Leck was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1973. At the time, his hobbies included eating, sleeping and pooping his pants. Since then, much has changed.

He has worked as a high school teacher in Canada, Japan and Kuwait, and has had the good fortune to travel extensively. Some of his favorite stories from his travels include the time he accidentally ordered an entire chicken (and only a chicken) for his dinner in Korea; the time all his clothes, backpack and towel were dragged out to sea by a rogue wave in Guam; and the time he accidentally paid $40 for a bottle of apple juice in Oman. I have two books, The Adventures of Jack Lime and The Further Adventures of Jack Lime, which I wrote with reluctant readers in mind. They're both mysteries, starring Jack Lime, who is a hard-boiled teenage detective. Each book has three mysteries that are about 40 pages long, so someone who doesn't read a lot can finish one up and feel a sense of accomplishment. In the first book, Jack has to find a bicycle that's been stolen, track down a kidnapped hamster, and find his school's trivia whiz before the regional championship takes place. Jack's in high school, but the stories are meant for students in grade 5-9.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

James Leck If I get stuck with a piece of writing, I usually walk away and do something else. I might go for a walk, tidy up, do the dishes, have a shower. What …moreIf I get stuck with a piece of writing, I usually walk away and do something else. I might go for a walk, tidy up, do the dishes, have a shower. What I don't do is keep sitting in front of the computer surfing the interweb or going on Facebook. I think getting up, moving around and doing something physical clears my mind, then my subconscious can start trying to find a solution. Before I sit down at the computer again, I might scribble a few notes in my journal, tossing around a few ideas until something clicks. I might also ask myself what's gone wrong with the story before that point. Perhaps I've made a wrong turn ten pages ago, maybe I don't know my main character well enough and that's what's tripping me up. I don't panic, I don't rush, I don't stress; those things will kill your creativity and you'll be stuck forever. Sometimes it's an easy fix, sometimes it means you're going to have to go back and make some serious changes, but it's important to remember it happens to everyone and there's no need to beat yourself up about a speed bump in your writing. And that's the way I like to think of it, not as a block, but just as a bump.(less)
