Poetry Month, Day 16/17 - Neighbor - take 2
I began this post on the 16th but fell asleep before I could finish it. So, this poem will represent day 16 and 17. It's kind of cheating but, for the sake of my sanity, I'm doing it! On the 15th, I used the word Neighbor, suggested by our old neighbor, Matt. After re-reading it, I realized I wrote it from a parent's perspective, not a kid's. So, I've written a second version, thinking back to my sons' time growing up on a street full of boys! Hope you like this - Boys of Annapolis Drive!!
The Boys of Annapolis Drive
Building rafts to sail the creek.Playing games of hide and seek.
Sleeping in Aunt Kathy's van. Laying out to get a tan.
Action figures. Magic cards.Playing football in our yards.
Comic books and sweet Pound Puppies.
Lizards, hamsters, Fun Fair guppies.
Riding bikes and roller blades.
Candy tossing at parades.
Halloween and trick-or-treating. In the fort for secret meetings.
Camping-out inside our tents.
Going to some sports events.
Helping build the castle park.Staying out 'til after dark.
Building forts with piles of snow.
Putting on a wrestling show.
Ring and run and almost caught.
Always friends, although we fought.
Having fun and getting muddy,
with my next door neighbor buddy.
Hanging out; just kicking back.
Traveling in one big pack.
We never let our parents rest.Neighbor friends are just the best!!

Poetry Month, Day 15 - Neighbor
Today's word, Neighbor, was suggested by an old (and missed) neighbor, Matt! Thanks, Matt!
Neighbor
There's more to being neighborsthan simply doing favors.
Or borrowing a power tooland driving carpool to the school.
There's going camping with the boys,Having laughs and sharing toys.
Keeping secrets, telling jokes, stretching out beneath the oaks.
Shopping at your favorite stores,Trading keys to your front doors. Watching movies, eating meals, sharing how you really feel.
Pulling weeds and planting flowersHanging in the yard for hours.
Hosting parties on the block,Walk right in - no need to knock!
Being neighbors means much moreThan living in the house next door!

Poetry Month, Day 14 - Ponderosity
Today's word, Ponderosity, was given to me by Juli, my writer friend. Juli thought she made up the word to rhyme with Curiosity, but she found out, it's a real word!
Ponderosity
She asked, with curiosity,About his ponderosity.
"Just how much is it that you weigh? You're getting bigger every day!
You once were smaller than a mouseAnd now you're bigger than a house!
If you keep growing at this rate,The ground will quake beneath your weight!"

Poetry Month, Day 13 - Flummox
Today's word, Flummox, was given to me by my friend (and LA roomie) Renee!!
Flummox
It's not very hard to flummox,a culinary lummox,
Give him a mincemeat surprise! He'll really be eating fruit pies.
Or Buffalo wings - finger lickin'Is not really bison - it's chicken!
Give him a sweet Spotted Dick,It's simply a pudding that's thick!
Yes, tricking a lummox is easy,Be careful though, he might get queasy!

Poetry Month, Day 12 - Curmudgeon
Today's word, Curmudgeon, was suggested by my co-worker, Sue Weidenfeld. At least, she used to be my co-worker - she retired last year - lucky her!! Well, Sue is anything but a curmudgeon - though I've worked with several people to whom that word would apply.
Curmudgeon
I know of a curmudgeonwhom I would like to bludgeon.
Well, maybe I exaggerate, but how this person does berate.
He's mean to those around himI'd really like to pound him.
Perhaps that is a bit too rough, but really I have had enough!
He abuses and attacks. I'll just give him one quick smack.
No, as much as I abhor himI think I'll just ignore him!

Poetry Month, Day 11 - Cerulean
Today's word, Cerulean (a shade of blue), was given to me by my other sort of niece, Ashley (Liz's sister). I tried to make the background of this page cerulean blue but couldn't figure out how. If anyone on blogspot knows how I can do that, please let me know. I think it would look cool with white writing on a cerulean background.

Cerulean
When you asked me to rhyme with cerulean, there was really no way I could truly win!
If you'd asked me to rhyme with deep blueNow that would be easy to do.
You could have said azure or turquoise. Either would be quite a good choice.
Or, if you'd said navy or teal,It wouldn't have been a big deal.
But, NO, you gave me cerulean -a color that surely would do me in!!

Poetry Month, Day 10 - Gimlet-eyed
Today's word, Gimlet-eyed, was given to me by fellow writer, Karen Kirchel. The poem is based on a true event from my wedding. I'll explain after you read the poem.
Gimlet-eyed
My sister has all eyes upon her.I'm proud to be her Maid of Honor
They speak their vows and say "I do"The Rabbi says, "I pronounce you . . ."
The groom begins to lift her veil, then turns to me; his face is pale.
He shoots a look, all gimlet-eyed,while I lean in to kiss the bride!
My twin sister, Julie, was my maid of honor and, at the end of the ceremony, when the Rabbi said, "You may now kiss the bride", Julie put her arm around my shoulder and went to kiss me!! We have it on video - so she can't deny it! It was SO funny!!! Talk about being in the moment!

Poetry Month, Day 9 - Hasenpfeffer
Today's word was given to me by Liz Austin, my sort of niece! I had only heard this word on Laverne and Shirley, in their theme song. You can watch it here. I wasn't sure what it meant and I was a little disturbed when I found out it's rabbit stew!!
HasenpfefferOn the first day of each month, the first words that I speak, are Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit.I know it - I'm a freak!
But really it's good luck, well, at least it's always been.Until one dreadful morning, for this vegetarian!
I woke to such an odor that wafted on the zephyr.Imagine my disgustwhen I found the hasenpfeffer!!

Poetry Month, Day 8 - Persnickety
Today's word, Persnickety (great word), was given to me by my writer friend, Anastasia Burke-Ely. As far as I can tell, Anastasia doesn't have a persnickety bone in her body!! Unlike Miss Prim, the subject of today's poem. So, without further ado . . .

Poetry Month, Day 7 - Serendipity
Today's word, Serendipity, came from fellow Hearing Itinerant Teacher, Tracy. Tracy is a phenomenal teacher, baker, bow maker - and who knows what else! Luckily for me - or should I say, serendipitously for me, she doesn't write poetry - at least not that I know of!
When I was looking for an image for this post, I came across this photo of Andy Warhol and this interesting little story on the site, Revolver Gallery.
In the heart of Little Italy, sharing a cold water flat with creepies, crawlies and things that go bump in the night lived Serendipity 3. Serendipity meant the art of finding the pleasantly unexpected by chance or sagacity. The word was invented by eighteenth century wordsmith Sir Horace Walpole; it evoked the ancient legend of the three princes of the island no longer known as Serendip. Serendipity 3 was New York’s first coffee house boutique. Before he was anyone, Andy Warhol declared it his favorite sweet shop, and paid his chits in drawings.

Serendipity
When rhyming serendipity,I took a little liberty.
I know that's not a perfect rhyme,but I don't have a lot of time.
If it were serendipitous,I could have used precipitous.
But, NO, it's serendipity -which smacks of your duplicity!
So, there you have it - now I'm through.I leave it here for your review!

But, NO, it's serendipity -which smacks of your duplicity!
So, there you have it - now I'm through.I leave it here for your review!
