Playing with genre: highly entertaining and thought-provoking
The Australian Book Review weighs in on The Road to Woop Woop.
Eugen Bacon’s début short story collection, The Road to Woop Woop, plays with the genres
of speculative fiction and magic realism. Using familiar tropes such as time travel, shapeshifting, and prescient characters, the stories typically refuse formulaic outcomes. The title story, for example, confounds expectations about the horror of bodily disintegration. The ominous angel of death in the story ‘Dying’ turns out to be a true wit. The surreal is transformed by the blessing of love in the heart-warming story ‘He Refused to Name It’.

Masterfully blends myths, heritage and self-discovery – Publishers Weekly Starred review of Ivory’s Story
Stoked to read this Publishers Weekly review.
” Bacon (The Road to Woop Woop) masterfully blends myth, heritage, and self-discovery in this impressive, genre-defying work of speculative fiction… Writing with sharp, insightful prose, Bacon delivers a taut thriller that dives deep into its distinctive protagonist’s internal life and family history. Seasoned speculative fiction readers will be wowed by Bacon’s careful, layered worldbuilding, well-developed characters, and otherworldly atmosphere. This deserves a wide audience. ”

Complex, earnest, and striking: Starred Publishers Weekly on Road to Woop Woop
Love this starred Publishers Weekly review of The Road to Woop Woop, and hope you do too!
“Bacon (Claiming T-Mo) delivers a commanding and visionary collection of speculative shorts, encompassing surrealism, fantasy, science fiction, and gorgeous, painterly literary fiction. It would be a disservice to call any of these 24 stories the standout, as each is impressive and beautifully rendered in Bacon’s distinct, poetic voice.” Read the full Publishers Weekly review.
