God Is My… (Psalms), 55
~ God Is My Deliver, 5 ~
Introduction ~ Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms. While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage ~ “Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; and let those who love Your salvation say continually, ‘Let God be magnified!’ But I am poor and needy;
make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay” (Psalm 70:4-5).
Prior Passages ~ “Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man! For You are the God of my strength; why do You cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” (Psalm 43:1-2).
“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:1-3).
“But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver themfrom the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him” (Psalm 37:39-40).
Comment ~ God does not promise His children an easy road, but He does promise that He will bring them through whatever troubles they face on earth.

Myth, 90
~ God Doesn’t Exist Since Bad Things Happen To Good People ~
Myth ~ This deceptive myth essentially says since bad things happen to good people then there must not be a God.
Reality ~ This is based on the false premise that there are good people. “For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:22b-23).
There has only been one good Person to walk upon this earth and they crucified Him!
Truth ~ Jesus teaches the opposite of this myth. “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).
Jesus also put it this way, “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20a).
Again Jesus taught His disciples, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus taught, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:10-12).
“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:3-5).
The Better Question ~ Since we are all sinners to the core why does anything good happen to any of us?
The Answer ~ “But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth” (Psalm 86:15).
Take a look at Psalm 136 where the phrase “His mercy endures forever” occurs 26 times.
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Have you repented to God for your sin?

Fear God, 214
~ Lessons from Psalm 34 ~
God does not want His children living in fear. “Grace and peace be multiplied to youin the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3). However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him. We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”
This Week’s Passage ~ “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth [1]. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.
“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears [2]. They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! [3] Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing [4].
“Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it [5].
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry [6]. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all [7]. He guards all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned” (Psalm 34:1-22).
Important Points ~ There are a number of important points in this short passage including, but not limited to:
[1] Knowing God is a continual thing. It is not an hour on Sunday in your local church.
[2] God hears the prayers of His children.
[3] True happiness and joy comes from a relationship with God.
[4] Those who trust the Lord will lack no good necessary thing.
[5] The person who fears God will have a different lifestyle.
[6] God hears and listens to the prayers of those who fear Him.
[7] Trusting God does not make life on earth any easier.
Fearing God Results in Salvation ~ “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31). “A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16). This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will.
Fearing God Results in Fearlessness ~ “The Lordis my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lordis the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1). The answer is: only God. With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.
Fearing God Results in Witnessing ~ “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).

Suffering For Christ
~ 6 Aspects of Christian Suffering ~
Suffering For Righteousness ~ “But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. ‘And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled’” (1 Peter 3:14-15).
Suffering Because Of A Godly Lifestyle ~ “Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the Word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him,we shall also live with Him” (2 Timothy 2:8-10).
Suffering For The Kingdom Of God ~ “We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:3-8).
Suffering Because You Are A Christian ~ “Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter” (1 Peter 4:16).
Suffering For Christ ~ “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake” (Philippians 1:29).
Suffering And Glory ~ “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed” (1 Peter 5:1).

God Our Rock, 6
~ David Knew The Rock ~
Introduction ~ In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand. This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life. Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).
Scripture ~ “Then David spoke to the Lord the words of this song, on the day when the Lord had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. And he said: ‘The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; the God of my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; my Savior, You save me from violence. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies” (2 Samuel 22:1-4).

Spiritual Gifts, 14
~ The Spiritual Gift of Giving ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Serving Gifts ~ Within the Service Sector of our society we can see a parallel of the Spiritual Gift of Serving with non-profit organizations.
Gift of Giving ~ This is a much broader area than just financial giving. It includes the freely giving of your time, your talent, as well as your treasure. It is “the God-given ability to give most liberally and beyond all human expectation.” –Pastor Loren Fischer
“‘He that giveth’ is he that shares his earthly possessions. God may have given you the gift of making money – and that is a gift. I know several Christian businessmen who have the Midas touch. That is their gift.” –J. Vernon McGee
Biblical Basis ~ The person with the gift of giving has a key understanding of the Gospel which is the critical foundation for their gift. “You were bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 7:23). “You are not your own; you were bought with a price” 1 Corinthians 6:19b-20). “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Love is measured by its gift.
Scripture ~ “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality” (Romans 12:6-8a).
That last verse has also been translated as “He that giveth, let him do it with simplicity” (Romans 12:8). Giving must be done with singleness of heart and not from mixed or doubtful motives, as was the case with Ananias and Sapphira (see Acts 5).
“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:2). “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Biblical Examples ~ “For God so loved the world that He gave” (John 3:16). “Christ also loved the church and gave” (Ephesians 5:25). “He loved me and gave” (Galatians 2:20). “And Jonathan loved him as his own soul... and gave” (1 Samuel 18:1,4).
Traits ~ An individual with the gift of giving; 1) works hard to aid needy people who are worthy of assistance, 2) backs up concerns with personal investment, encourages others to give to worthy causes, 3) plans for the best use of available resources, feel secure in the ability to invest wisely, 4) possess a desire to share personal resources with others and to assist them in worthy endeavors, and 5) welcomes the opportunity to give (but wants assurance that others will put the contributions to good use).
Closing Comments ~ “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
The true Christian attitude toward material goods is not “How much of God's money shall I give to God?” but rather, “How much of God's money shall I keep for myself?”
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).

Question – Jesus, 84
~ Regarding Neighbors, 2of2 ~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?’
“So he answered and said, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’
“And He said to him, ‘You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.’ But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’
“Then Jesus answered and said: ‘A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, “Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.” So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?’
“And he said, ‘He who showed mercy on him.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise’” (Luke 10:25-37).

Myth, 89
~ Since God Owns All He Doesn’t Want My Giving ~
Myth ~ God doesn’t need my money or giving of my time or talents.
Deception ~ This idea is sometimes based on the reality that since God owns all He doesn’t need anything from me. “For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are Mine” (Psalm 50:10-11).
From a materialistic view this would make sense. From a relationship or spiritual perspective it is clearly in error.
Reality ~ In contrast to all religionsChristianity is a loving relationship. Lovers give to each other! “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
Jesus doesn’t ask for you to give of your time, talent, and treasure because of His need but for your need. In our self-centered world giving is good for your spiritual life and happiness. Giving also builds your faith.
“I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35).
Related Myth ~ It would be easier to give if I had more.
“Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ So Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother’.”
“And he said, ‘All these things I have kept from my youth.’ So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’ But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich” (Luke 18:18-23).
“And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, ‘Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had’” (Luke 21:1-4).
Comment ~ Jesus gave His all for you. He gave His life. Jesus lived the life I could not live, and paid the debt I could not pay.

Fear God, 213
~ Lessons From Deuteronomy 10 ~
God does not want His children living in fear. “Grace and peace be multiplied to youin the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3). However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him. We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”
Scripture Examples ~ “Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lordand who meditate on His name” (Malachi 3:16).
In the Pentateuch we are given the essence of The Law. Note the opening of that summary. “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God [1], to walk in all His ways [2] and to love Him [3], to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul [4], and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes [5] which I command you today for your good?” (Deuteronomy 10:12-13).
Important Points ~ There are a number of important points in this short passage including, but not limited to:
[1] The foundational issue is “to fear the Lord your God.”
[2] The result will be “to walk in all His ways.”
[3] This increases your ability “to love Him.”
[4] Love’s response will be “to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
[5] The mature process results in a desire “to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes.”
The Results Of Fearing God ~ Proverbs gives us a good example of what the “fearing God” means: “The fear of the Lordis to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate” (Proverbs 8:13)
The Bottom Line ~ “Praise the Lord! Blessed [happy] is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments” (Psalm 112:1).Fearing God Results in Salvation ~ “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).
